Three guest artist recitals slated at SFA next week
The Stephen F. Austin State University School of Music will present three guest artist recitals during the third week of October as part of the 2011-2012 Cole Performing Arts Series.
All three performances are in Cole Concert Hall on the SFA campus.
At 6 p.m. on Monday, Oct.17, three members of the Forth Worth Symphony Orchestra—violinists Eugene Chekasov and Ivo Ivanov and violist Sergey Tsoy—and Texas Christian University piano faculty member Larissa Cherkasov will join SFA faculty cellist Evgeni Raychev in presenting “Brahms and Friends.”
The program, which includes “Piano Trio, Op. 101” by Johannes Brahams, “String Trio No. 2” by Heinrich Von Herzogenberg and “Piano Quintet, Op. 44” by Robert Schumann, should be a “true musical delight,” according to Raychev.
At 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 19, Master Sgt. Shawn Herndon of the U.S. Military Academy Band at West Point will present a guest recital that features a mixture of standards and lesser known pieces from the clarinet repertoire. Christopher Ayer, SFA professor of music, will join Herndon in performing Franz Krommer’s “Concerto for Two Clarinets in E-flat, Op. 91 (III).”
Herndon’s recital is a part of the mission of the U.S. service bands to provide free public concerts to Americans, so there is no admission charge.
At 7:30 p.m. o n Friday, Oct. 21, Russian pianist Zoya Shuhatovich will perform a varied program, including J.S. Bach’s “Chromatic Fantasy and Fugue,” which SFA Professor of Piano Andrew Parr calls a “monument” of the baroque era.
“The program balances the seriousness of this style with the romanticism of the well-known Robert Schumann ‘Arabeske,’ several waltzes by Frédéric Chopin and beautifully evocative Spanish pieces from Isaac Albeniz’s ‘Suite Espagnole,’” Parr continued.
The recitals are joint presentations of the SFA College of Fine Arts and School of Music. Cole Concert Hall is located in the Tom and Peggy Wright Music Building, 2210 Alumni Drive.

Joint band concert scheduled at SFA
Tamey Anglley, newly appointed assistant director of bands at Stephen F. Austin State University, will make her Nacogdoches conducting debut during the joint concert of the Wind Symphony and Symphonic Band at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 18, in W.M. Turner Auditorium.

Under Anglley’s direction, the Symphonic Band will present Frank Ticheli’s “Joy Revisited,” a piece which the composer calls “an expression of its namesake: simple, unabashed joy.”
The band will also perform Derek Bourgeois’ “Serenade, Op. 22” and Ralph Satz’ arrangement of Aram Kachaturian’s “Armenian Dances.”
The Wind Symphony, directed by SFA Associate Director of Bands David W. Campo, will open its portion of the program with Richard Saucedo’s “Shooting Stars,” which prominently features the soprano and alto saxophone.
The group will also play David Gillingham’s “Radiant Moonbeams” and David Maslanka’s “Heart Songs.”
Anglley will guest conduct the Wind Symphony’s presentation of William Bolcom’s “Graceful Ghost Rag,” a piece the composer originally wrote for piano but transcribed for band in 2010.
Prior to her appointment to the SFA faculty, Anglley was director of bands at Morningside College in Sioux City, Iowa.
She earned her doctoral degree at Texas Tech University, where she worked with the Goin’ Band from Raiderland, and the basketball pep bands. She earned her master’s and bachelor’s degrees at Oklahoma State University.
In addition to conducting the Symphonic Band at SFA, Anglley will conduct the basketball pep bands and teach undergraduate instrumental conducting.
The Oct. 11 concert, titled “Radiance,” is a joint presentation of the SFA College of Fine Arts and School of Music. W.M. Turner Auditorium is located in the Griffith Fine Arts Building, 2222 Alumni Drive.

Obituary: Jim Jeff Young
Graveside service for Mr. Jim J. Young, Sr., 94, of Nacogdoches, Texas will be held at 10:00 AM on Saturday, October 15, 2011 at Sunset Memorial Park in Nacogdoches with Rev. Billy McDaniel officiating.
Mr. Young was born on June 20, 1917 in Teague, Texas, son of the late Andy and Pearl Blakeney Young. He passed away peacefully on October 12, 2011 in Nacogdoches.
Mr. Young was born and raised in Teague, Texas and attended school there. He worked the oil fields of Texas and Louisiana for many years. Jim was a member of the Fredonia Hill Baptist Church of Nacogdoches. He enjoyed going to garage sales and watching old western television shows. Jim was known as the “bubble gum man” around town because he always passed out gum to everyone. He also loved to visit with friends, old and new. Jim was a wonderful father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, and will be missed greatly by his family.
Jimmy is survived by two sons, Jimmy J. Young, Jr. and spouse, Selenda, of DeKalb, Texas and Michael D. Young and spouse, Sherrill, of Pasadena, Texas; grandchildren, Teddy Young and spouse, Tiffany, of Slidell, Louisiana, Lori Young of Austin, Texas, Christy Young of Pasadena, Texas, Amanda Young of Pasadena, Texas, and Amber Goble and spouse, Matt, of Vilseck, Germany; great-grandchildren, Kenneth and Abbi Young of Pasadena, Texas, Avery Young of Slidell, Louisiana, and Johnathan and Aubrey Goble of Vilseck, Germany.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Florence “Flo” Young and a grandson, Michael David Young.

On 10-12-2011 an Officer was dispatched to Lumberjack Village Parking Garage in reference to a Hit and Run. Upon arrival the Officer made contact with the complainant, who advised on 10-12-2011 his unattended vehicle was damaged in the Lumberjack Village Parking Garage. There are no suspects.
On 10-12-2011 an Officer was dispatched to the lobby of UPD in reference to Harassment. Upon arrival the Officer made contact with the complainant, who advised between 10-10-2011 and 10-12-2011 a known person has been harassing her over the internet and in person. There is one suspect.

On 10-12-2011 an Officer observed three suspicious subjects in Lumberjack Village Parking Garage. The Officer made contact with the subject and discovered that the subjects had just keyed a vehicle in the Lumberjack Village Parking Garage. There are three suspects.
Monday October 10, 2011 – Tuesday October 11, 2011
On 10-10-2011 an Officer was contacted by a complainant at the East College Cafeteria in reference to Theft. The complainant stated on 10-10-2011 his unattended wallet was stolen at the East College Cafeteria. There are no suspects.
On 10-10-2011 an Officer was dispatched to the East College Cafeteria in reference to Theft. Upon arrival the Officer made contact with the complainant, who advised on 10-10-2011 his laptop was stolen from an unsecure locker in the break room at the East College Cafeteria. There are no suspects.
On 10-10-2011 an Officer was dispatched to the lobby of UPD in reference to Theft. Upon arrival the Officer made contact with the complainant, who advised on 10-7-2011 a known subject borrowed her laptop and has not returned the laptop. There is one suspect.
On 10-10-2011 an Officer was dispatched to Mays Hall in reference to Theft. Upon arrival the Officer made contact with the complainant, who advised between 10-7-2011 and 10-10-2011 his secure bicycle was stolen from the bike rack at Mays Hall. There are no suspects.

128 grams of crack cocaine discovered by Constable Office PCT 4

The Nacogdoches County Constable Office PCT 4 has made an arrest late Wednesday Night after a traffic stop revealed a large quantity of crack cocaine found inside a vehicle. Constable Jason Bridges stated that the stop occurred on highway 59 shortly before midnight. Deputy Constable Allen conducted the traffic stop for a seat belt violation. Constable Bridges stated that the driver and lone occupant of the vehicle was very nervous and Deputy Allen could smell drugs coming from inside the vehicle. Deputy Allen also observed other indications that caused concern that criminal activity may be occurring. A search of the motor vehicle was conducted due to Deputy Allen having probable cause of smelling narcotics coming from the vehicle. Deputy Allen found 128 grams of crack cocaine that was concealed in the dash of the vehicle.
Constable Jason Bridges stated that the street value of the crack cocaine is worth $3,500.00 dollars. The driver of the vehicle, Preston Walker who is 36 years of age from Liberty, Texas was arrested at the scene. Walker is charged with possession of a controlled substance Felony 2nd degree and transported to the Nacogdoches County Jail.

City of Nacogdoches United Way Campaign in full force
The City of Nacogdoches is excited to once again participate in the Live United Campaign, part of Nacogdoches County United Way’s 2011 campaign. In 2010 city employees raised $12,751 for the organization. Tarah Peace, Assistant Human Resources Manager, is part of the United Way’s Loaned Executive Program. “I am thrilled to be able to help such a wonderful agency in this capacity,” said Peace, “I hope that this year we (the City) can increase our contributions by at least 10%.”

The City of Nacogdoches’ United Way Campaign got underway last week and runs until Monday, October 17, 2011. Funds raised through United Way are invested in local programs to improve lives and build a strong community. Our goal of the 10% increase will help the City remain one of the top 10 contributors for United Way so that city employees can qualify for the United Way “Close to Home” program.
The City’s United Way committee hosts informal meeting for all of its employees. At each of the city’s employee meetings, United Way Executive Director Gary Ashcraft speaks with city employees about not only how their contributions make a difference but also about what steps to take to point someone in the right direction when they are in a situation where they need help. Representatives of various agencies have also attended these meetings to speak with city employees from organizations such as CASA, Family Crisis Center of East Texas, Solid Foundation Association, Nacogdoches Senior Center, Encourager Program and more.
New to the city’s campaign this year is their partnership with Chick-Fil-A. All city employees who attended an informative meeting received a coupon for a free chicken sandwich. The City is also hosting a “Kiss the Cow” competition encouraging employees to donate funds, which benefit United Way, so that one lucky employee will actually “Kiss the Cow” on Monday, October 17th, at 2 p.m. in front of City Hall, on the Plaza Principal Stage in historic downtown Nacogdoches.
