CITY RECEIVES APPROVAL FOR REDISTRICTING OF CITY COUNCIL WARDS

The City of Nacogdoches has received approval from the U.S. Department of Justice for redistricting of its single-member wards.

“Bojorquez Law Firm, PLLC out of Austin, consultants for the redistricting project, has notified the City of Nacogdoches that preclearance has been received from the U.S. Department of Justice who does not interpose any objection to the change in single member districts.” stated City Manager Jim Jeffers.

On October, 2011 the City Council adopted a redistricting plan that has a deviation of 9.63% from the “ideal” voting district for each of the four city council wards, which is below the acceptable 10% deviation.

“The 2010 Census indicated the City of Nacogdoches single-member wards were out of balance. The NE and NW Wards were over-populated, and the SE and SW Wards were under-populated. The changes to the ward lines will insure a more balanced voting ward based on population, race and better balance in the neighborhoods”, said Jeffers.

The new ward lines are effective immediately and will be used to determine voting districts in the May 2012 city council election.
Redistricting maps and information may also be found on the City’s website at www.ci.nacogdoches.tx.us or by calling the City Secretary at 559-2504.
