Senior Discount Day returns April 3rd

     Participating merchants in historic downtown Nacogdoches are gearing up for their monthly installment of Senior Discount Day. The monthly shopping promotion is held on the 1st Tuesday of each month, which means Tuesday, April 3rd seniors can receive an extra discount along the red brick streets. “We are happy with the response we have gotten so far with this promotion. This is just another avenue to encourage our residents to Shop Nac First,” said Main Street Manager Sarah O’Brien.

     Seventeen downtown merchants participate in the Senior Discount Day. A list of participating merchants will be available for pick up at the Convention & Visitors Bureau, located at 200 E. Main Street. Merchants for April include: Convention & Visitors Bureau, Wildflower, Brick Street Antiques, CASA, Glass Castles, Coats Gallery, Kennedy’s, Macy May’s, Old Town Antiques, Special Finds Antiques & Collectibles, Stuff N such, The Mushroom, Trinkets to Treasures, Heart of Texas, House of Traditions, the Good Book, and Lyric’s French Knot Quilt Shop.

     “Special thanks to all of our merchants for making this in-store promotion possible,” said O’Brien.

     While the definition of Senior Citizen varies historic downtown Nacogdoches merchants will honor the Senior Discount to residents and visitors over 55 years of age. The 10% discount will be honored at all of the participating merchants throughout the day on April 3rd. Be sure to check individual store hours before making plans to head downtown!

JLL Volunteer of the Month

Kind, generous, dependable, showing grace for others, organized, creative in her own way and very punctual…these are the characteristics that are used to describe our January Volunteer of the Month, Michelle Combs.  She has been a member of the League for four years and graciously serves her community without complaint.  Not only does she involve herself unselfishly, she is a full-time mom and wife.  Michelle was the 1st member to express an interest in helping with the Fun Run, which goes above and beyond her placement.  She has tirelessly worked with the printing company to make our fabulous Fun Run poster and flyer and also helped with distributing them to the schools and local businesses.  On several occasions, she has been known to help set up for the general meetings…and you guessed it…that’s not her job either.   Another friend says she has a very sweet disposition and always has a smile on her face.  Her husband, of 10 years, admires her dedication to their children and family.  Because of your dedication to your family, friends and the League, we congratulate you, Michelle Combs, January 2012 Volunteer of the Month.

JLL Volunteer of the Month

Diana Hineman is passionate about changing the world, one person at a time, and passionate about doing whatever she can to make others happy.  Our March Volunteer of the Month is an active member of St. Cyprians Church, a loving wife of 16 years and mother of two adorable boys.   Between work as a librarian and fulfilling her League obligations, she also sings in the choir, serves on The Vestry at St. Cyprians Church and volunteers to help at boy-scout events for her boys.  She is very innovative and volunteered to set up a booth at the Home Garden Show at the Civic Center as a way to kick off ticket sales for Spring Market.  Her husband describes her as being down to earth, very smart, sweet and sensitive to others.  He admires her big-tender heart and the willingness to help a friend in need.  Her friends say that she is reliable, kind, cheerful, fun and always puts others ahead of herself.  Because of your dedication, we congratulate you, Diana Hineman, March 2012 Volunteer of the Month.

Obituary: GERALD JAMES STAMPS

     Funeral services for Gerald James Stamps, 88, of Timpson, TX, will be held at 2:00 PM, Tuesday, April 3, 2012, at Mt. Olive Baptist Church, Timpson, with Bro. Cliff Hughes and Bro. Eric Pledger officiating. Interment will follow in Shady Grove Cemetery, Timpson.

     Visitation for family and friends will be 6:00 – 8:00 PM, Monday, April 2, 2012, at Taylor Funeral Home, Timpson. Mr. Stamps passed away Sunday, April 01, 2012, in Garrison, TX.

     Born November 17, 1923, in Farmerville, LA, Gerald James Stamps was the son of the late Fred C. and Amy (Stilley) Stamps. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in February, 1942, and served until his retirement in 1962. Gerald was a Chief Petty Officer in Weapons Ordinance and saw military action aboard an aircraft carrier in the Pacific during World War II and also served during the Korean War. While stationed in Ft. Lauderdale, FL, Gerald and Avis Ramsey were married July 20, 1945.

     After his retirement, Gerald enjoyed hunting and fishing, but his love was for his Lord, his family, and Mt. Olive Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon for 35 years.

     Survivors include his wife Avis Ramsey Stamps of Timpson; son Gerald S. Stamps and wife Mary of Timpson; daughters Gay Childs and husband John of Timpson and Lana Satterwhite and husband David of Huxley, TX; daughter-in-law Marianne Stamps Blalock of Marshall, TX; brothers Frank and Virgil Stamps; 10 grandchildren; and 18 great grandchildren.

     In addition to his parents, Gerald J. Stamps was preceded in death by his stepmother Nell Stamps, son Steven Stamps, brother Bill Stamps, and sister Julia Hunter.

Obituary: Thomas Stephen Luna

     Mass of Christian Burial services for Thomas Stephen Luna, age 74, of Nacogdoches will be held at 10 A.M., Monday, April 2, 2012 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church with Rev. Monsignor, James E. Young, officiating and burial to follow in Moral Cemetery in Nacogdoches. He was born December 29, 1937 in Nacogdoches, Texas, the son of Jack and Laney Poskey Luna and passed away March 30, 2012.

     Thomas Luna grew up in the Moral community of Nacogdoches County. He was a graduate of Nacogdoches High School, class of 1956 where he was a letterman in both football and baseball. He married Jane Prado on January 20, 1962 and they celebrated 50 years together this past January.

     Tom was the proud owner and operator of Luna’s South Street Exxon for over 35 years where he met and served many friends. He truly enjoyed talking with his loyal customers each day.

     Tom enjoyed gardening, listening to country music and watching his favorite western television shows. He looked forward to attending SFA football and basketball games. He loved visiting with friends and spending time with his family, especially the numerous events involving his grandchildren. He was a lifelong member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church at Moral, where he served as a Eucharistic minister; he was also an active volunteer at many church events and activities. He was a member of the 56ers (NHS class of 1956) and enjoyed reminiscing with former classmates about the “glory days” of Dragon football.

     In addition to his loving wife of 50 years, Jane Prado Luna, Tom is survived by his sons, Michael S. Luna and Tina Rogers of Bardstown, Kentucky, and Matthew A. and wife, Teresa S. Luna of Nacogdoches, Texas; daughter, J. Melissa Wright and husband, Thomas E. of Boerne, Texas; grandchildren, Marc Luna of Tempe, Arizona, Ethan and Evan Wright of Boerne, Texas, Caitlin and Cade Luna of Nacogdoches, Texas; brothers, Robert Luna of Lufkin, Texas, Lonnie Luna and wife, Mary Jane Luna of Nacogdoches, Texas, Johnny Luna and wife, Lorraine of Euless, Texas; sisters, Maria Bullock of Nacogdoches, Texas and Marie Cure and husband, Bobby of Ft. Worth, Texas.

     In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by brothers, Louis Luna and James Luna, and sister, Velma Crow.

     Pallbearers will be Cade Luna, Evan Wright, Ethan Wright, Marc Luna, Rick Luna, Charles Montes, Ramon Munoz, and Brad Williamson; honorary pallbearers will be Coot Brandon, Robin Dawley, Gary Stripling, Darrell Witten, members of the NHS Class of 1956 and all former employees of Luna’s Exxon.

     Visitation with Tom’s family will be from 5 until 7 P.M., Sunday, April 1, 2012 at Laird Funeral Home, in Nacogdoches. A Rosary will follow visitation at 7:00 PM.

     In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Thomas Stephen Luna Memorial Scholarship Fund in care of the Nacogdoches High School Alumni Association, P. O. Box 632152, Nacogdoches, Texas 75963-2152.

Obituary: Sharon Lee Bulls

     Sharon Lee Bulls, age 64, of Nacogdoches, Texas, passed away Friday, March 30, 2012, at a local hospital.

     Mrs. Bulls was born November 7, 1947, in Superior, Nebraska.

     She is survived by her sons, John Henry Bulls II of Nacogdoches, Texas, and Christopher Patrick Bulls of Holt, Missouri.

     Private memorial arrangements will be conducted.
