SFA Gardens to host world-class conservationist at Pineywoods Native Plant Center

Dr. Peter Raven, renowned conservationist and president emeritus of the St. Louis Botanical Garden, will discuss “Conservation in a Rapidly Changing World” at the inaugural lecture in the new Ina Brundrett Conservation Education Building at Stephen F. Austin State University.

The event, hosted by SFA Gardens, will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 4, in the new facility located in SFA’s Pineywoods Native Plant Center, 2900 Raguet St. in Nacogdoches. The event is free and open to the public, but reservations are required.

Raven is one of the world’s leading botanists and advocates of conservation and biodiversity. For four decades, he headed the Missouri Botanical Garden, an institution he nurtured into a world-class center for botanical research, education and horticultural display. He retired as president in 2010 and assumed the role of president emeritus and consultant through 2014.

Described by Time magazine as a “hero for the planet,” Raven champions research aimed at preserving endangered plants around the world and is a leading advocate for conservation and a sustainable environment.

Raven is the recipient of numerous prizes and awards in recognition of his work in science and conservation, including the prestigious International Prize for Biology from the government of Japan and the U.S. National Medal of Science, the country’s highest award for scientific accomplishment. He has held Guggenheim and John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation fellowships.

Raven was a member of President Bill Clinton’s Committee of Advisers on Science and Technology. He also served for 12 years as home secretary of the National Academy of Sciences and is a member of the academies of science in Argentina, Brazil, China, Denmark, India, Italy, Mexico, Russia, Sweden, the United Kingdom and several other countries.

The author of numerous books and reports, both popular and scientific, Raven co-wrote “Biology of Plants,” an internationally best-selling textbook, now in its sixth edition. He also co-authored “Environment,” a leading textbook on the environment

KASEY LANSDALE KICKS OFF THE NEW YEAR AND “RESTLESS ROADTRIP”

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (January 8, 2014) – Few artists have the privilege of being produced by Grammy-Award winner John Carter Cash. Even fewer have the chance to perform alongside him. Country Blues artist, Kasey Lansdale, can boast of both. This new year, Nashville concert-goers have the opportunity to see her perform live alongside her producer, John Carter Cash, at The Rutledge on Saturday, January 18, as she officially kicks off her “Restless Roadtrip” tour. The Southern Blues infused line-up also features Angel Mary & the Tennessee Werewolves, who Cash also produced; Raelyn Nelson, the granddaughter of Outlaw Country legend Willie Nelson; and Blue Mother Tupelo. This new generation of talent puts their own unique twist on a classic Country family tradition and is sure to bring an iconic, action-packed performance that fans will want to put on your list of things to do this new year. Lansdale’s performance will feature songs off her recently released album, “Restless,” which was produced by John Carter Cash in the Cash Cabin Studio. Released in August of 2013, the album features 11 tracks that showcase her smokey Tanya Tucker-esque twang in self-penned songs like “Sorry Ain’t Enough” and “Blame You For Trying.”

“As a vocalist, she walks the line between traditional and contemporary sounds throughout, with the passion oozing out of tracks such as ‘Blame You For Trying’ and ‘Just Another Day’ being a great example of the former,” said seasoned music writer, Chuck Dauphin, in Music News Nashville of the album.

The “Restless Roadtrip” national tour will serve as a follow up to her debut studio album with stops ranging from coast to coast and new dates being added regularly.

Obituary: Barbara Ann “Bobbie” Scott

Mrs. Barbara Ann “Bobbie” Scott, age 79, passed away on Friday, January 10, 2014 at Nacogdoches Medical Center. She was born on November 20, 1934 to parents Grover Cleveland Hall and Laura Hurst Hall of Melrose, Texas.
Funeral services will be held at Cason Monk-Metcalf Sunset Chapel Monday, January 13, 2014 at 2:00 pm. Rev. Paul Sevar will be officiating. Interment will follow at Melrose Cemetery.
Friends and family are invited to visitation on Sunday, January12, 2014 at Cason Monk- Metcalf from 2-4 pm.
Bobbie is preceded in death by her parents, one brother Hershel Hall; two sisters, Earline Hall Morton and Clarice Hall Stuart and one grandson, Jason Scott.
Bobbie is survived by her loving husband of 63 years, Jimmie E. Scott of Nacogdoches; sons, Jimmie Scott Jr. of Nacogdoches, Jeff Scott of Del Rio, Texas; daughter, Joan Scott of Mesquite, Texas, granddaughters, Brittany Carwell of Cherry Valley, Arkansas and Brenna Scott of Kilgore, Texas; brother, Grover Hall Jr. of Melrose, Texas and many nieces and nephews.
Bobbie was a loving wife, nurturing mother, special grandmother and a member of Calvary Baptist Church. Her greatest accomplishment in life was becoming a Christian. Bobbie’s greatest joy was taking care of her family and cooking for others. Her nurturing and giving spirit will be remembered as her greatest tributes to those she loved the most.
Pallbearers will be David Carwell, Craig Morton, Bobby Samford, Michael Smith, Charles Yarborough, Jimmy Neighbors and honorary pallbearer Ray Schaden.

Obituary: Johnnie “John” H. Thomas, Jr.

Mr. Johnnie “John” H. Thomas, Jr., age 72, passed away at Nacogdoches Medical Center on Friday, January 10, 2014. He was born in Houston County, Texas on December 22, 1941 to parents Johnnie H. Thomas Sr. and Jewel Carson Thomas.
A funeral service will be conducted on Tuesday, January 14 at 2:00 pm at Cason Monk-Metcalf Funeral Directors with Bro. Freddy Shores officiating.
Friends and family are invited to visitation on Monday, January 13 at Cason Monk- Metcalf from 6:00 pm til 8:00 pm.
John is preceded in death by his parents; infant brothers, James Evert Thomas and Kenneth Wayne Thomas; and infant sister, Carol Sue Thomas.
He is survived by his loving wife of 51 years, Frances Vest-Thomas; daughters, Tammy Baal and husband James of Baytown, Pam Corman and husband Aubery of Nacogdoches, Milinda Monday and husband Jason of Garrison, Lisa Mozingo and husband William; grandchildren, Brandon Corman and wife Alyssa, Maelee Corman, Seth Baal, Jessica Mozingo, Eleanor Mozingo, Lauren Mozingo, Monica Monday-Stokes, Kenneth Monday, Mason Monday; brother, Harold Thomas of Livingston; sister, Betty Gersbach of Groveton; numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.
Johnnie attended school in Lovelady, Texas. He later married the love of life at First Baptist Church in Grapeland, Texas on November 24, 1962. Soon after, he went to work for Brown and Root Welding Company at Shell Oil Company in Pasadena, Texas where he retired in 1985 to move to Nacogdoches, Texas and open his own company, Thomas Welding Sales and Service that same year.
John loved hunting, fishing woodworking, traveling and welding. His greatest passion was discussing scriptures, studying and spreading God’s word and spending time with his family.
Pallbearers will be James Baal, Aubery Corman, William Mozingo, Jr., Jason Monday, Brandon Corman and Seth Baal. Honorary pallbearers will be members of his Tuesday night bible study group including Joe Biggerstaff, Keith Drewery, Wayne McLaughlin, Tom Finnegan, Tom Stinson, Jeff Braswell.
