May 9: SFA Crime Log
On 5-8-2011 an Officer was dispatched to Steen Hall in reference to Burglary of a Habitation. Upon arrival the Officer made contact with the complainant, who advised on 5-8-2011 her prescription medication was stolen from her residence. There is one suspect.
On 5-8-2011 an Officer was dispatched to East College Cafeteria in reference to Theft. Upon arrival the Officer made contact with the complainant, who advised on 5-8-2011 a subject obtained food without paying. There is one suspect.
On 5-8-2011 an Officer was dispatched to Hall 16 in reference to a Drug Complaint. Upon arrival the Officer located a subject in possession of a controlled substance. The subject was arrested and transported to the Nacogdoches County Jail without incident. There is one suspect.
On 5-8-2011 an Officer was dispatched to Horseshoe Dr. in reference to Criminal Mischief. Upon arrival the Officer made contact with the complainant, who advised on 5-8-2011 her vehicle was damaged in lot 29. There are no suspects.
On 5-7-2011 while on patrol, an Officer observed a subject urinating in lot 8. The Officer made contact with the subject and issued the subject a citation for disorderly conduct-urinating in a public place. There is one suspect.
On 5-7-2011 while on patrol, an officer observed a subject urinating in Lot 42. The Officer made contact with the subject and found that the subject was a minor and had consumed an alcoholic beverage. The subject was issued a citation for minor consuming alcohol and disorderly conduct-urinating in a public place. There is one suspect.
On 5-7-2011 an Officer was dispatched to South Hall in reference to a Drug Complaint. Upon arrival the Officers made contact with four subjects inside a residence. The Officers located two subjects in possession of drug paraphernalia and possession of marihuana. There are two suspects.
On 5-7-2011 an Officer was dispatched to Hall 14 in reference to Criminal Mischief. Upon arrival the Officer located a cup containing urine in a drinking water fountain. There are no suspects.
On 5-6-2011 an Officer was dispatched to lot 56 in reference to Criminal Mischief. Upon arrival the Officer made contact with the complainant, who advised on 5-6-2011 her vehicle was scratched numerous times and an offensive drawing was drawn on her vehicle. There are no suspects.

Fine arts students, faculty receive Dean’s Awards
The Stephen F. Austin State University College of Fine Arts recently recognized four students and one faculty member during the presentation of the annual Dean’s Awards.
Monica Hambrick, Orange junior music education major; Kelly Heasty, La Porte junior art major; Leslie Laney, Gilmer senior music education major; and Samantha Walker, Houston junior theatre major; were selected by the faculty of the respective schools on the basis of their potential to further develop their artistic and academic capabilities, explained Dr. A.C. “Buddy” Himes, dean of the College of Fine Arts.
New this year to the ceremony was the awarding of the first College of Fine Arts Faculty Dean’s Award to Dr. Charles R. Gavin, professor of horn.
“This award is intended to make a strong statement to all College of Fine Arts faculty—that even though the award goes to only one person, this person is a symbol of the esteem in which each and every faculty member is held and the pride everyone takes in the work of the faculty,” said Himes.
The awards were established by the Dean’s Circle, an auxiliary group of community members founded in 2008 and “dedicated, in part, to nurturing potential young artists within the College of Fine Arts and recognizing excellence within the faculty,” Himes said.
Monica Hambrick
Hambrick, who received the Dr. Robert G. Sidnell Memorial Dean’s Award in Music Education, has been active in numerous ensembles, including the Lumberjack Marching Band, Wind Ensemble and Orchestra of the Pines, and has served as a volunteer during music competitions and as a counselor during summer Band Camps.
She has begun preparing for her future role as a music educator by teaching private horn and piano lessons through SFA’s Music Preparatory Division and by tutoring music history.
Kelly Heasty
Heasty, the recipient of the Ed and Gwen Cole Dean’s Award in Art, is pursuing a Bachelor of Fine Arts. Although she was an inexperienced artist when she came to SFA, she has excelled in the fields of sculpture and drawing. She was chosen to be a Spotlight Artist in 2010, and her work has been shown in the “Filling the Void” exhibition and at Tabu Coffee.
She has provided service to the School of Art during Showcase Saturdays and SFA’s Art Day, and she is a co-founder of the SFA Sculpture Club.
Leslie Laney
Laney, who was awarded the Jack and Doris Ledbetter Dean’s Award in Music, is a member of the Madrigal Singers and the A Cappella Choir. She has had roles in SFA’s productions of “Gianni Schicchi,” “Susannah,” and “Amahl and the Night Visitors,” and most recently portrayed Rosalinde in “Die Fledermaus.” She was selected as a soloist for SFA’s most recent production of Handel’s “Messiah” and has sung with Opera East Texas and the Longview Community Theater.
After graduation, Laney hopes to pursue a Master of Music in vocal performance.
Walker, who received the George and Peggy Schmidbauer Dean’s Award in Theatre, has appeared in SFA’s mainstage productions of “The Elephant Man,” “Picnic,” “Twelfth Night” and “How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying” as well as several student-directed productions.
She has also served on various props, paint, load-in and light hang crews and has assisted with SFA’s One-Act Play Clinics.
Charles Gavin
Gavin, who earned a Doctor of Musical Arts from the University of Iowa, has been a member of the SFA faculty since 1984. He currently performs with the Stone Fort Wind Quintet, SFA Brass Quintet and several regional orchestras.
His former students are directors of Texas Honors Bands and faculty members at the University of Michigan, University of Alabama, Ithaca College, Texas A&M University and East Texas Baptist University. Other students’ experiences range from being a Hollywood studio artist to performing with the Dallas Symphony Orchestra and in European concert venues.
Gavin was introduced by Dr. Ronald Anderson, former director of the School of Music and current interim chair of the Department of Psychology, and awarded $3,000. Each recipient was given an opportunity to speak.
“The Dean’s Awards are about imbuing faculty and students with pride and self-confidence to pursue the ideal,” said Himes. “The intent is for each recipient to dream what the ideal could be and to inspire them to use this award to go about making that ideal their reality.”

Wright (Democratic): May Calendar
Fellow Nacogdoches County Democrats,
In the interest of devoting most of this email to local election information (below), we’ll keep the other news short. Topping national news is the killing of Al-Qaeda terrorist leader Osama bin Laden in an operation approved by President Obama and carried out by U.S. Special Forces. May 1st was a great day for our nation, one that made the world safer and hopefully gave some closure and relief to those who lost loved ones in those fateful 9/11 attacks almost 10 years ago. For good analysis, check out www.politico.org. In state politics, Republicans continued their assault on public education and needed state services by passing a budget that made draconian cuts to both, all without tapping the “Rainy Day” fund to close the budget gap. The Texas legislature also approved the infamous “sonogram” bill. More bad legislation is due up this week, including a bill to allow for lower teacher pay and increases public school class sizes. Keep up with the action at www.texastribune.org and www.texasobserver.org. As far as local stories go, you’ll find all necessary information on our local elections below, so if you haven’t voted yet, get out and make your voice heard!
A couple of other important notes: 1) We will NOT be having a meeting during the month of May, but will continue our monthly gatherings in June, so mark your calendar for June 9th at the Courthouse Annex beginning at 5:30. 2) If you haven’t seen it yet, check out our President’s on-point comedy routine at this year’s White House Correspondents dinner.

Obituary: Earl W. Bradford
Earl W. Bradford, 83, passed away on Sunday, May, 8, 2011 at Nacogdoches Medical Center. He was born on February 18, 1928 in Marshall, Texas to John Robert and Leila Solomon Bradford.
A funeral service will take place on Wednesday, May 11, 2011 at 10 am at Calvary Baptist Church located at 3732 NE Stallings Dr., Nacogdoches, Texas, with Rev. Paul Sevar officiating. A private family graveside will take place at Sunset Memorial Park in Nacogdoches. Friends are invited to a visitation on Tuesday, May 10, 2011 from 5-7pm at Cason Monk-Metcalf Funeral Directors, located at 5400 North Street in Nacogdoches.
