SFA art galleries closed during Thanksgiving break

    Art galleries operated by the Stephen F. Austin State University School of Art will close Wednesday, Nov. 23, for the Thanksgiving holidays and reopen Tuesday, Nov. 29.

    Currently on display in the on-campus Griffith Gallery is “Art of the Pacific Rim: Artifacts and Art from Northwest America, Oceania, Melanesia, Asia and Central America.”

    The exhibition, which comprises over 30 masks, weapons, dolls and artifacts from the private collection of Nacogdoches residents Dr. Robert Gruebel and Jo Ellen H. Carlson, will close on Friday, Dec. 16.

    Griffith Gallery is located in Room 208 of the Griffith Fine Arts Building, 2222 Alumni Dr. Regular gallery hours are 12:30 to 5 p.m., Tuesday through Friday.

    Patrons who have still not viewed “John Heliker: Drawing on the New Deal 1932-1948” in the Reavley Gallery of The Cole Art Center @ The Old Opera House may do so through Tuesday, Nov. 22, the last day for the exhibition. The show includes drawings and sketchbooks by American artist John Heliker, who achieved early fame for his expressionistic work in the 1930s and ‘40s.

    “The Legacy of Diedrich Rulfs: Architect of Nacogdoches,” which is on display in the Ledbetter Gallery of The Cole Art Center, will run through Saturday, Jan. 14. The exhibition features photographs taken by SFA Associate Professor of Art Christopher Talbot of homes and buildings in Nacogdoches that Rulfs designed.

    The Cole Art Center is located at 329 E. Main St. in downtown Nacogdoches. Its regular hours are 12:30 to 5 p.m., Tuesday through Friday, and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday.

Claire Grisham McCrary

     Mrs. Claire Grisham McCrary, 93, of Nacogdoches, Texas, passed away Tuesday, Nov. 15, at a local hospital.

     Mrs. McCrary was born Aug. 30, 1918, in Jumbo, Panola County, Texas, as a daughter of Jim Lary Grisham and Clevie Mae (Keeling) Grisham. She received a BS degree in education from North Texas University in Denton and had a long distinguished career teaching school for 34 years.

     She was a member of North Street Church of Christ, Nacogdoches Garden Club, Texas State Teachers Association, United Daughters of Confederacy, and Daughters of the American Revolution.

     She and Robert C. “Pug” McCrary were married May 12, 1945, in Nacogdoches, Texas.

     Survivors: her husband of 66 years, Robert C. “Pug” McCrary; son, Dr. Jim R. McCrary and wife Janis of Kingwood, Texas; grandchildren, Jennifer McCrary of Houston, Texas, Jessica Prosser and husband Chuck of Cleveland, Texas, Jana McCrary of Kingwood, Texas, and Jimmy McCrary and wife Amy of Beaumont, Texas; and a great-granddaughter, Ember Prosser of Cleveland, Texas.

     She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, James Grisham.

     Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Friday, Nov. 18, 2011, at the Cason Monk-Metcalf Sunset Chapel, Nacogdoches, with Mr. Bill Sherrill officiating. Interment will follow at Old Shiloh Cemetery, Mount Enterprise, Texas.

     Visitation will be held Thursday, Nov. 17, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Cason Monk-Metcalf Funeral Directors, Nacogdoches.

     Memorial contributions may be made to North Street Church of Christ, 3914 North St., Nacogdoches, TX 75965-1801.

Nacogdoches County Constable Office Precinct 4 executed a search warrant which resulted in the seizure of a methamphetamine laboratory

     On 09-16-2011 the Nacogdoches County Constable Office Precinct 4 along with the Texas Department of Public Safety Narcotics Division executed a search warrant on Cr. 525 in Nacogdoches County that resulted in the seizure of a methamphetamine laboratory. Constable Bridges stated that his office along with DPS has had an ongoing investigation in the manufacturing of methamphetamine for the last three months. Both agencies were able to collect enough information and evidence to establish probable cause for a search warrant on the residence Wednesday evening. Constable Bridges stated that both agencies identified a male subject that was manufacturing and selling methamphetamine in Nacogdoches County. Through surveillance and other forms of police investigations the Constable Office was able to obtain a search warrant for the residence and property of Terry Boozier. During the investigation both agencies were able to make a purchase of methamphetamine from Boozer.

     Late Wednesday evening both agencies executed the search warrant on the property. Constable Bridges stated that a methamphetamine laboratory was found inside of a metal building that was adjacent to Boozer’s house. There were a number of different types of chemicals found on the property that were being using to manufacture methamphetamine. Constable Bridges stated there were a lot of dangerous chemicals at this lab and we were fortunate to be able to get this of the street. A dump site was also found on the property, which contained evidence that the manufacturing of methamphetamine had been occurring on the property for some time.

     Bridges stated that one of the major affects of methamphetamine is that it makes users of the drug very paranoid. It is not uncommon to find things scattered out and hidden in different areas as well as chemicals being mixed with other chemicals. A lot of these chemicals being used to make methamphetamine are very dangerous in itself. But when these chemicals are mixed together it makes them more volatile and that much more dangerous for us to have to process.

     The clean up time took several hours and the DLS Hazmat Reponse team assisted in the clean up. Also located inside the residence, officers found methamphetamine, along with several more weapons, police scanners and night vision equipment.

     Terry Lynn Boozer, 56 years of age, from Nacogdoches, Texas was arrested and transported to the Nacogdoches County jail. Boozer was charged with Possession of a Controlled substance, Delivery of a controlled substance, Possession of certain chemicals with intent to manufacture methamphetamine and unlawfully possession of a firearm by a felon. Constable Bridges stated that Boozer is a convicted felon and not allowed to possess firearms.

SFA News – ‘Midsummer Night’s Dream’

Corpus Christi senior Kory Pullam, who plays the mischievous Puck in Stephen F. Austin State University School of Theatre’s production of “A Midsummer Night’s Dream,” makes some final adjustments to his appearance before going on stage. The popular comedy by William Shakespeare opened Tuesday and is being presented at 7:30 each evening through Saturday, Nov. 19, in W.M. Turner Auditorium. SFA director named nursing ambassador

    The director of the Richard and Lucille DeWitt School of Nursing at Stephen F. Austin State University has been named a National League for Nursing ambassador and will help keep faculty and administration members informed about the league’s initiatives, grant opportunities, conferences, publications and workshops.

     Dr. Glenda Walker will encourage participation in NLN professional development programs and research grant applications, as well as submission of abstracts and manuscripts for an annual education summit and the league’s peer-reviewed journal.

     According to Dr. Beverly Malone, CEO of the NLN, the ambassador program was created to make it as easy as possible for nursing faculty members and nursing programs at all levels of academia to enhance professional development.

     “At the same time, we expect the ambassadors to communicate to NLN professional staff and the board what issues and challenges are of greatest concern to nurse educators in the field so that we can maximize the effectiveness of our programming and services,” Malone said. “The ambassadors are, in effect, the NLN’s ‘eyes and ears’ on campus. We are confident that the insights gained through this valuable relationship will help make the NLN more responsive to the needs of our dedicated nurse educators.”

     Walker has a master’s degree and a doctorate in nursing from the University of Alabama in Birmingham. Her clinical specialty is psychiatric/mental health nursing, and she has more than 33 years of experience in nursing education administration, including experience in both private and public universities and in a health science center.

     Walker developed the first specialty track in the nation for family violence at Vanderbilt University, where she taught psychiatric content for the family nurse practitioner program. As the associate dean of academic affairs and director of graduate nursing programs at the University of North Dakota, Walker developed a graduate program in rural health nursing and served as the director for graduate programs in nurse anesthesia and adult health.

     In 1987, Walker moved to an administration position at the University of Texas Health Science Center in Houston. She was associate dean of clinical and community affairs and the director of nursing research at the Harris County Psychiatric Hospital and developed and implemented the University of Texas Nursing Service Center while serving as associate dean of the School of Nursing.

     In 1991, Walker received a National Institute of Nursing Research grant, which focused on sexual abuse, and she has more than 30 published articles. In addition to generating more than $3 million in grants and gifts, Walker has been a federal grant reviewer for the Office for the Advancement of Telemedicine.

     In 2004, Walker was elected to the Nacogdoches Women’s Hall of Fame. She is an alumna of Leadership Texas and is a past president of the Texas Association of Deans and Directors.

     The NLN Ambassador Program was established in fall 2006 with members who teach in all types of nursing programs – practical nurse, associate degree, diploma, baccalaureate, master’s and doctoral. Today, there are more than 700 ambassadors representing schools of nursing in 49 states plus Canada, Guam and the Virgin Islands. The league offers professional development, networking opportunities, testing services, nursing research grants and public policy initiatives to its 35,000 individual and 1,200 institutional members.

O’Brien elected Vice-President of Texas Downtown Association

     Officers were recently elected for the Austin-based Texas Downtown Association Board of Directors for 2012. They are as follows:

     Julie Johncox, President of JP Solutions in Fort Worth, was elected to the office of President. Sarah O’Brien, Manager of the City of Nacogdoches Main Street Program, was elected to the office of Vice President. Kate Singleton, Principal of Community Revitalization Strategies, was elected to the office of Secretary. Ned Muse, Director of Business Development with KSA Engineers, was re-elected to the office of Treasurer for a second one-year term.

     Frieda Hanley, Manager of the Decatur Main Street Program, will serve as Immediate Past President for a one year term.

     Board elections were conducted during the 2011 Texas Downtown Development and Revitalization Conference held in Nacogdoches November 1-4 that attracted over 200 downtowners from across the state to the red brick streets of Texas’ Oldest Town.

     The TDA Board of Directors is comprised of 15 members from across the state who are directly involved in a range of downtown revitalization activities. The board members include downtown professionals and managers, Main Street Managers from the Texas Main Street Program, private sector consultants, and small business owners. Two ex-officio directors represent the Texas Main Street Program.

     TDA, established in 1985, has more than 400 members from Texas downtowns who are involved in a myriad of development and revitalization activities.

Wassail Fest brewing up as part of the Nine Flags Christmas Festival

     Downtown merchants will once again be competing for bragging rights for the best holiday brew during Wassail Fest, one of the highlights of the 15th annual Nine Flags Christmas Festival sponsored by the Daily Sentinel.

Enjoy a hot cup of wassail while you do your Christmas shopping during Wassail Fest on Saturday, November 26 in downtown Nacogdoches.

     The event is scheduled from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, November 26, when the wassail will be served at various shops, stores and restaurants within the historic downtown district. A list of participating merchants can be picked up at the Visitor Center, located at 200 E. Main St.

     Shoppers and other downtown visitors are invited to warm their bodies and spirits by sampling the various recipes, which will be judged on both taste and presentation. The competition is fierce, but the wassail is a warm and welcome respite for holiday shoppers.

     “Wassail Fest is a festive event that the downtown merchants and their customers look forward to each and every year,” said Lindsey Mathews, meeting and event coordinator of the Nacogdoches Convention & Visitors Bureau. “It is a great day to come downtown, do a little Christmas shopping, have lunch, drink some delicious warm wassail and just enjoy the season.”

     Wassail is a hot drink that is made with wine, beer or cider, spices, sugar and usually baked apples. It is traditionally served from a large bowl, especially at Christmastime. Wassail Fest participants put their own twists on the recipes, which are heavily guarded secrets among the cooks. The beverages served at Wassail Fest are alcohol-free.

     The Nine Flags Christmas Festival is a celebration of Texas history & culture and will be held Nov. 17 through Dec. 10 in Nacogdoches, located about 150 miles north of Houston via U.S. 59. Nine different flags have flown over the oldest town in Texas throughout its rich history, and this year’s festival will pay special tribute to the American flag and honor our Nation’s independence with several special events dedicated to our fight for freedom. The Nine Flags Christmas Festival is presented by metroPCS and platinum sponsors of the festival include Commercial Bank of Texas, Keep Nacogdoches Beautiful, Mike Perry Motor Company, and Wal-Mart.
