Photo exhibition at Cole Art Center documents small town wrestling

    David McClister’s photograph series “Rastlin – A Southern Survey” will be open for viewing on Friday, Dec. 2, in The Cole Art Center @ The Old Opera House in downtown Nacogdoches.

    The exhibition, which documents small town wrestling in the South, is part of the Stephen F. Austin State University School of Art’s Gallery Series and will be on display in the Reavley Gallery.

    McClister, a Nashville-based photographer and music video director who specializes in documentary, photojournalism and celebrity portraiture, began the series in 2009 by visiting different venues each weekend.

    “There was something about this world—the sounds, the smells, the fans—the action inside and outside the ring—everything about it—that fascinated me,” wrote McClister in his artist statement for the exhibition. “To me (the series) is a complete look at what small town local wrestling looks like.”

    The exhibition of photos will be included in a book of the same title being released by The SFA University Press in the spring.

    McClister’s photographs have appeared in publications such as Garden & Gun, Rolling Stone, GQ, SPIN, Esquire and Marie Claire. He has also done photo shoots for major record labels, including Warner Bros., Capitol/EMI, Universal Music Group and Sony BMG and major ad campaigns for clients such as Tide and Digitas.

    His music videos for artists Lady Antebellum, The Band Perry, Dia Frampton and LeAnn Rimes have won numerous awards and appeared on MTV, VH-1 and CMT.

    McClister will give a gallery talk at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 19, shortly before the exhibition closes on Saturday, Jan. 21.

    The show is a joint presentation of the SFA College of Fine Arts and School of Art and is sponsored in part by the SFA Friends of the Visual Arts and Nacogdoches Junior Forum.

    The Cole Art Center is located at 329 E. Main St. Regular gallery hours are 12:30 to 5 p.m., Tuesday through Friday, and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday. Admission is free.

Three concerts scheduled at SFA this week

    East Texas music lovers can take advantage of three different concerts offered by the Stephen F. Austin State University School of Music within the next few days.

The Stone Fort Wind Quintet, composed of SFA music faculty, will present one of three School of Music concerts this week. The quintet will perform at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 30, in Cole Concert Hall.

    On Tuesday, Nov. 29, in W.M. Turner Auditorium, the Wind Symphony and Symphonic Band will present “Americana,” a concert of music by American composers such as Charles Ives, David Maslanka, John Philip Sousa and Joseph Wilcox Jenkins.

    Associate Director of Bands David W. Campo conducts the Wind Symphony, and Assistant Director of Bands Tamey Anglley conducts the Symphonic Band. Graduate students Michael Oreka of Chesapeake, Va., and Jay Weems of Stephenville will each guest conduct one piece.

    The Stone Fort Wind Quintet, composed of SFA music faculty, will present “Classics for Wind Quintet” on Wednesday, Nov. 30, in Cole Concert Hall.

    Christina Guenther (flute), John W. Goodall (oboe), Christopher Ayer (clarinet), Susan Nelson (bassoon) and Charles Gavin (horn) will perform works by Franz Danzi and Paul Hindemith.

    Saxophonist Nathan Nabb will join his colleagues in presenting Leslie Bennett’s “Wind Music: Five Movements for Wind Sextet.”

    On Friday, Dec. 2, the Swingin’ Axes and Swingin’ Aces jazz bands will present their end-of-the-semester concert in W.M. Turner Auditorium.

    Under the direction of Associate Professor Deb Scott, the Swingin’ Aces will perform three familiar Christmas songs and a tune by Maynard Ferguson. Nacogdoches sophomore Jacob Barnhill will be the featured vocalist on “Soul Vaccination” by Tower of Power.

    “The Swingin’ Axes will perform music by current composers…the guys producing the music being played by the most cutting edge professional and university bands around right now,” said Professor Gary Wurtz, the band’s director.

SFA Arboretum to host wreath-making seminar

    The Stephen F. Austin State University Mast Arboretum will host a garden seminar titled “Deck the Halls – Using Evergreens to Decorate for the Holidays” from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, Dec. 3, in Room 118 of the Agriculture Building, 1924 Wilson Drive.

    Join SFA research associate Dawn Stover to learn how to create elegant wreaths and garlands using materials from Mother Nature. Evergreen branches and garlands once served as symbols of enduring life and a fruitful year to come.

    Participants will learn principles of wreath, garland and centerpiece construction and make a wreath to enjoy at home for the holidays. In addition to the traditional wreaths and garlands, Stover also will introduce new crafts using items from the garden and forest.

Local dancers to hold benefit concert for cancer

    The Stephen F. Austin State University chapter of Dancers Against Cancer and Phi Psi fraternity, along with the Gobel School of Dance, will hold a benefit concert supporting cancer research at 7 p.m. Friday, Dec. 2, and Saturday, Dec. 3, at the Shelton Gym on the SFA campus.

Pictured are members of Dancers Against Cancer, a newly formed SFA student organization committed to raising cancer awareness through dance.

    The groups will present a wide variety of dance performances, including jazz, hip-hop, ballet, lyrical and comedy. All proceeds from the concert will benefit local breast cancer support groups.

    “Cancer is something that will directly or indirectly impact us all,” said Courtney Vernon, president of Dancers Against Cancer.

    “Giving back through the art of dance is a way to raise awareness and honor survivors and those lost to cancer.”

Agriculture scholarship applications available now

     Agriculture scholarship funds are available for high school and undergraduate students attending StephenF.AustinStateUniversity. An online scholarship application form is located at the scholarship link at www.sfasu.edu, and the deadline to apply is Feb. 1.

     “The scholarships have been for $500 with a required major within the Arthur Temple College of Forestry and Agriculture or with a major in agriculture, forestry, or environmental science programs,” said Dr. Dale Perritt, SFASU agriculture department chair. “This includes about 17 various areas of study from which they may choose.”

     The SFA Ag Scholarship is open to NacogdochesCounty high school seniors or existing and transfer students who reside in NacogdochesCounty who have similar goals in association with the purpose of the Nacogdoches Agriculture Committee.

     “Sponsorships help us finance future scholarships,” event chair Angela Shannon said. “A $5,000 presenting sponsorship, $2,500 prime sponsorship, $1,000 choice sponsorship and $500 select sponsorship are available.”

     The Nacogdoches Agriculture Committee consists of representatives from Nacogdoches County Farm Bureau, Nacogdoches County Chamber of Commerce, Nacogdoches Economic Development Corp., Texas AgriLife Extension Service, Cooperative Extension Program, Pineywoods RC&D, Stephen F. Austin State University Arthur Temple College of Forestry and Agriculture and the Texas Forest Service.

     These organizations are proud to co-sponsor the Agriculture Banquet honoring the Agriculture Industry in NacogdochesCounty.

     “The committee works together to promote agriculture and agricultural-related business in NacogdochesCounty,” said Shannon. “We identify economic development strategies and resources and establish relationships that result in growth in agri-business and agri-business research in NacogdochesCounty – one of the top 10 agriculture producing counties in Texas.”

Obituary: Paul Augusta Anderson

     Mr. Paul Augusta Anderson, 77, passed away in Nacogdoches, Texas on November 25, 2011 surrounded by his family. He was born on May 18, 1934 to parents Adolph Gustav Anderson and Fern Alice Robinson Anderson in Carterville, Missouri.

     Visitation will be on Monday, November 28 at Cason Monk-Metcalf Funeral Directors from 5pm – 7 pm. A funeral service will be on Tuesday, November 29 at Cason Monk-Metcalf Sunset Chapel with Bill Sherrill officiating at 2:30 pm. Interment will follow with military rights being performed by the US Army at Sunset Memorial Park.

     Those who knew Paul knew they met a “character”. He was fun loving and never had a dull moment in his life. He was drafted into the United States Army in 1956 and served his country for 4 years. He developed a love for operating Ham Radios and electronics. Later, he became a captain of the Civil Air Patrol of Lufkin and Nacogdoches. He worked as an inspector of the United States Department of Agriculture of which he retired after 35 years of service. Paul was an active member of his church, North Street Church of Christ. His family knew him as a generous man who was proud of his kids and grandkids. He was a loyal devoted and faithful husband to his wife, Barbara for 45 years. He was often found playing “42” at the Senior Center with his favorite friends. His humor and kind ways will be missed by all of those who knew him.

     He is preceded in death by his wife Barbara Louise Anderson; brother, Carl Anderson; sisters, Mary Blackburn and Fern Glazier.

      Paul is survived by his son, Dennis Anderson and wife Vonda; daughters, Deborah Weems and husband David, Teresa Hensarling and husband Michael; grandsons, Robert Anderson, John Paul Anderson, Justin David Weems, Jacob Scott Weems and wife Lisa, Kevin Ryan Hensarling; granddaughter, Lindsey Erin Hensarling; nieces and nephews, Linda Capps, Pamela and Andy Glazier, and his faithful companion, “Sugar”.

     Memorial donations may be offered to a charity of your choice.

Obituary: L. B. Rogers

     Mr. L.B. Rogers, age 84, of Douglass, Texas, passed away Thursday, Nov. 24, 2011, at his daughter’s residence in Chambers County, Texas.

     Mr. Rogers was born Jan. 26, 1927, in Douglass, Texas, as a son of George Henry Rogers and Martha Selina (Stanaland) Rogers. He was married to Carrie Nadine Miller on Aug. 9, 1947.

     L.B. loved his family and enjoyed spending time with them. He also enjoyed family reunions. He also enjoyed fishing and loved his yearly fishing trip with his “kinfolk.” He retired from Evers & Son Construction, leaving a a work team that he cherished. He worked on airplanes while he served his time with the U.S. Army during World War II.

     He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Nadine Rogers; four children, Al Rogers and Mary of Cisco, Texas, Bill Rogers and Janie of Dayton, Texas, Connie Darlene Fountain and Tommy of Dayton, Texas, and Wilburn Rogers and Tina of Dayton, Texas; brother, Shorty Rogers; sisters, Opal Hulsey, Glenda Johnson, and Eva Allen; 16 grandchildren; and a host of great-grandchildren.

     In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Christina Michelle Rogers.

     Funeral services are set for 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 29, 2011, at Cason Monk-Metcalf’s Sunset Chapel, located at 5400 North Street in Nacogdoches, Texas, with Bro. John Murdoch officiating. Interment will follow at Douglass Cemetery, located on FM 225 in Douglass, Texas.

     Visitation will be held Monday, Nov. 28, 2011, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Cason Monk-Metcalf, located at 5400 North Street in Nacogdoches.

     Pallbearers will be Chad Rogers, Lonnie Dean, Willie Rogers Jr., Matthew Rogers, Roy Rogers II, and Tyler Parker.

Obituary: Grover Lee Gresham

     Funeral service for Mr. Grover Lee “Tar Baby” Gresham, 95, of Nacogdoches, Texas will be held on Sunday, November 27, 2011, at 2:00 pm at Laird Funeral Home with Rev. Jerry Wilson and Rev. Dock Lazarine officiating. Burial will follow at McKnight Cemetery.

     Mr. Gresham was born in Looneyville, Texas on February 14, 1916, to the late Henry Gresham and Martha Harteler Gresham. He passed away peacefully on November 23, 2011, in Nacogdoches.

     Grover grew up in Looneyville, Texas. He retired from Tucker, Brannon and Horton in Nacogdoches where he worked as a mechanic. Grover had many interests and hobbies but his first love was going to church. He was a long standing member of Westside Missionary Baptist Church where he was the “official” greeter before services. He also loved to rebuild motors, gardening and tending his flowers and chewing tobacco. He enjoyed building bird houses, fishing and he loved to laugh and talk with his family, friends and church family. Grover was a huge fan of the Dallas Cowboys and his famous qoute about them was “When I get to be 100 years old, I’m going to go to work for the Dallas Cowboys because they don’t do nothing no way.”

     Grover was a wonderful son, husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He would go out of his way to help anyone in need. He will be missed greatly by all who knew and loved him.

     He is survived by his wife, Laverne Lazarine Gresham of Nacogdoches; a son, Larry Gresham of Nacogdoches; a step-son, Everitt Rhodes and wife, Linda of Lufkin; a step-daughter, Lois Nell Gibson and husband, Bill of Pine Hill, Alabama; two sisters, Ether Crawford of Enid, Oklahoma and Erma Houston of Canyon, Texas, eight grandchildren, seventeen great-grandchildren and twenty five great-great grandchildren; as well as numerous nieces, nephews and other extended family, good friends and church family.

     In additon to his parents he was preceded in death by his first wife, Syble Gresham; infant son, Garland Gresham; daughter, Shirley Ann Jinkins; two sisters, Odell Boman and Lether Gresham Brinkley; one brother, Lester Gresham.

     Pallbearers will be Rodney Rodriques, Bud Koonce, Larry Gresham, Jr., Jay Bennett, Stacey King, Lance Gresham, Edward Work and Wade Allen.
Honorary pallbearers will be members of Mr. Gresham’s Sunday school class.

     Visitation will be held on Saturday, November 26, 2011, from 6-8 pm at Laird Funeral Home.

Obituary: Novis Linney

     Service for Novis Linney will be held at 2 PM on Saturday, November 26, 2011 at Laird Funeral Home in Nacogdoches, TX. Visitation will start at 10 AM on Saturday morning and continue until service time.

     Novis Elizabeth Linney, 100, of Nacogdoches, TX, passed away Thursday, November 24th, 2011 at the home of her daughter and son-in-law where she resided.

     She was a faithful member of the church of Christ all her life. Novis’ family moved from Tenaha to Nacogdoches when she was 12 years of age. She attended and graduated from SFA , and taught school for over 40 years. She lived in Nacogdoches until she married O. C. Foerster in 1938. He preceded her in death in 1947. She married J. F. Linney in 1948, who preceded her in death in 1981.

     She is survived by her son, George Kerr Linney, three daughters and sons-in-law: Anna and Glenn Burt of Nacogdoches, TX; Patricia K Miller of Nacogdoches, TX; Mary and Michael Ray Louviere, of Nederland, TX. She is also survived by a brother and sister-in-law, Joe and Ellen Floyd of Shreveport, LA., and many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

     Mrs. Linney was preceded in death by four brothers: Austin, Otis, Herbert and Edgar Floyd; two sisters: Vera Covington and Golda Sanders.
