Healthy Nacogdoches Coalition and the Farmer’s Market team up
The City of Nacogdoches Main Street Program and the Healthy Nacogdoches Coalition are excited to announce their plans to host a special edition of the Nacogdoches Farmer’s Market next week. The market will be held on Wednesday, April 18, 2012 from noon to 3 p.m., at Blount Park, located on the grounds of Nacogdoches Memorial Hospital at 1200 N. Mound Street.
Kinnie Douglas Program Coordinator, for Community Health at Nacogdoches Memorial Hospital recently approached city staff and the Farmer’s Market advisory board to see the feasibility of hosting a special market on the grounds of Memorial Hospital. The Farmer’s Market advisory board and its vendors jumped at the opportunity. The market will mark the first Wednesday market of the spring season with plans for future Wednesday markets to take place at the Old Hitch Lot, 107 W. Pearl Street, sometime in the next few weeks.
“Memorial Hospital strives to provide a healthy workplace for our employees; we work to promote healthy behaviors including making healthy food choices. Hosting the farmers market on our campus provides our employees with access to fresh fruits and vegetables and showcases what is available at our local farmers market. We hope that our employees as well as community members will join us for this special opportunity,” said Douglas.
While the idea behind this market is to expose Memorial Hospital employees to the options of fresh fruits and vegetables, the entire community is invited to come out and Shop Nac First at this special edition of the Farmer’s Market.
Some items that will be available on April 18th are: fine cheeses, baked goods, arugula, asparagus, frozen shelled beans (butter, baby Lima & pinto), beets, broccoli, cabbages, carrots, greens (arugula, beet, collard, kale, mustard, spinach, Swiss chard & turnip), kohlrabi, mixed lettuce, frozen okra, onions, frozen shelled peas (black eye, brown Crowder & zipper cream), pecans (cracked, shelled & unshelled), new potatoes, radishes, squash (acorn, banana, butternut, kushaw & spaghetti), strawberries, sweet potatoes & turnips.

Former secretary of state talks about making a difference (By Piero Pretto at The Pine Log)
Many people dream about making a difference in the world. But Baker, a man who has worked alongside multiple U. S. presidents, did not grow up dreaming of such things. According to Baker, he just wanted to be a good lawyer like his father. Nevertheless, the former secretary of state has left his fingerprints all over recent American history.
But his impact on the world was not product of aspiration or a burning desire to aid his country.
It was a product of a tennis tournament.
The Archie McDonald Speaker Series, created in honor of a man who has taught at SFA for the last 48 years, presented James A. Baker III Thursday night in the Grand Ballroom of the Baker Pattillo Student Center. Baker is well known for his enduring friendship with former President George H. W. Bush.
McDonald, after whom the series is named and the moderator, was quick to ask how the two partnered up. Baker noted that early in his life he had always honored his grandfather’s advice.
“Work hard. Study hard. And stay out of politics,” Baker said.
However, Baker said that in the late 1950s he was partnered with Bush for a tennis tournament in Houston. Shortly afterward, Baker’s fascination with politics emerged despite the words of wisdom from his elders.
Following the tennis tournament, George H. W. Bush and Baker began enjoying regular tennis matches. However, Baker’s life took a dramatic turn when his wife died of breast cancer at a young age in February of 1970. Baker recalled that George Bush helped get through the tragedy by giving him a job.
“You need to do something about your grief,” Baker recalled Bush saying. “How about helping me run for Senate?”
Despite Bush losing the Senate election to Lloyd Bentsen that year, Baker went on to serve as Gulf Coast regional chairman for Richard Nixon’s presidential campaign. In 1975, he was selected to be undersecretary of commerce for Gerald Ford. In a five-year span, Baker evolved from apolitical lawyer to a powerful influence in White House affairs.
Throughout the night, Baker shared his unexpected and profound political journey.
Despite the fact that Baker helped George H.W. Bush run against Ronald Reagan for the presidency in 1980, Reagan appointed Baker to serve as the White House chief of staff.
Baker described Reagan as an honest man and very straight-forward.
“What you see is what you get,” Baker recalled.
As White House chief of staff, Baker aided Ronald Regan in implementing the same public policies he had once called “voodoo politics.”
In 1989, President George H.W. Bush appointed his long-time friend to be America’s 61st secretary of state. In this position, Baker credited himself to delegating the 34-nation alliance that fought alongside the United States in the Persian Gulf War. He also worked with world leaders to bring down the Berlin Wall.
Baker is often referred to as the “Great Negotiator.”
Baker’s final comments of the night addressed state of the country and drew enthusiastic applause from the standing-room-only crowd.
“We are still the preeminent power of the world,” Baker said. “But we’ve got one big problem. We got to take care of our debt problem. We’re spending like drunken sailors.”
Following the event, SFA President Baker Pattillo honored Baker with SFA’s Lifetime Achievement Award.
The speaker series is sponsored by SFA’s Student Government Association and exists to honor McDonald, a prominent scholar, educator and community commentator.
The series is designed to help preserve the tradition of McDonald’s writings and oral presentations. Each year a well-known national figure, which have included iconic businessman George Foreman and Apollo 12 astronaut Alan Bean, is invited to SFA to speak on current culture issues.

Tickets still available for School of Music’s ‘Extravaganza 25’
The SFA Friends of Music will be accepting reservations through the end of this week for Extravaganza 25, the Stephen F. Austin State University School of Music’s annual gala banquet. The banquet is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Thursday, April 26, in the Grand Ballroom of SFA’s Baker Pattillo Student Center.
This year’s Extravaganza, “Sterling Stars,” celebrates the 25th anniversary of the gala banquet, which features gourmet dining, performances by student soloists and ensembles, and the presentation of student awards.
Additionally, Bruce Brown, who received his Master of Music Performance from SFA in 1985 and then spent 20 years singing opera professionally in the United States and Europe, will be presented the Outstanding Music Alumnus Award.
Gene H. Moon, SFA director of orchestral studies, will serve as the master of ceremonies for this year’s event.

Tickets still available for ‘Alice in Wonderland’ at SFA
Parents and teachers of children in kindergarten through sixth grade can still make reservations for the children to see “Alice in Wonderland” at 9:30 a.m. or 12:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 25, in W.M. Turner Auditorium on the campus of Stephen F. Austin State University. The event is a presentation of the SFA College of Fine Arts’ Children’s Performing Arts Series.
American Family Theater, Inc. will bring the classic story of “Alice in Wonderland” to life at 9:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 25, in W.M. Turner Auditorium as part of the Stephen F. Austin State University College of Fine Arts' Children's Performing Arts Series. Seats are still available for both performances.
“The audience will be transported to a dream-filled wonderland packed with excitement, songs and fantasy as American Family Theater, Inc. presents its one-hour adaptation of Lewis Carroll’s book,” said Diane J. Flynn, director of the children’s series.

‘La Traviata’
Stephen F. Austin State University graduate vocal students Joshua Dennis of McKinney and Tiffanny Hamilton of Longview rehearse a scene from Giuseppe Verdi’s opera “La Traviata,” which the SFA School of Music and School of Theatre will present at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, April 19, through Saturday, April 21, in W.M. Turner Auditorium. Dennis and Hamilton will portray the lead characters, Alfredo and his courtesan Violetta, during the Thursday and Saturday performances. The opera, which will be sung in English with supertitles projected above the stage, is double cast to maximize the vocal students’ performance opportunities. Focus on SFA at chamber luncheon
The Nacogdoches County Chamber Fourth Friday Luncheon presented by SFASU Office of the President, will focus on Stephen F. Austin State University. The event is noon to 1 p.m., Friday, Apr. 20 at Hotel Fredonia. Gold sponsor is SFA Athletic Department.
The speaker is Dr. Kimberly Childs. Dr. Childs is a professor in the SFA Department of Mathematics and Statistics. She serves as the Interim Dean of the College of Sciences and Mathematics and the executive director of SFA’s Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) Center.
The STEMCenter is a support structure for the College. The primary goal of the STEM Research and LearningCenter is to increase the number of students who are interested in science, technology, engineering and mathematics, and who are academically prepared to enter STEM careers. In keeping with research findings regarding inhibitors to STEM engagement, the center will focus on:
Increasing STEM awareness and public perception,
facilitating innovation in STEM university education,
providing support for student mentoring during transitional periods in their education,
guiding STEM teacher induction during the first three years in the classroom,
empowering STEM teacher-leaders to transform their districts from within.
These endeavors will directly address the pressing demand for a technologically advanced workforce by increasing STEM knowledge, capacity and expertise. More information is available at stem.sfasu.edu/.
Dr. Childs’ degrees are Ph.D., TexasA&MUniversity, Mathematics Education (1995); M.S., Stephen F. Austin State University, Mathematics Teaching (1988); and B.S., Dallas Baptist University, Mathematics (1977).

Information About Literature And Candidates:
Voters can feel free to bring in literature to use in the voting booths that will help them in making their choices. However, voters are not allowed to leave their literature in the voting booths after they have voted. Sample ballots will be posted for voters to examine if they would like before receiving their ballots. Election workers will be happy to assist all voters in helping them understand how to mark their ballots and will be happy to read the ballots to voters as well if they are asked to. However, election workers will not provide any information or insight to voters regarding candidates, so we recommend that voters research the candidates running for office before they come in to vote. The Nacogdoches County Elections Office or the individual entities conducting the elections do not provide any literature or signage for candidates running for office.
Other Important Information:
The most important date coming up is Thursday, April 12, 2012. This is the last day to register to vote for the May 12, 2012 School Board and City Council Elections and all applications must be received (not postmarked) by the Nacogdoches County Elections Office by this date. The Elections Office will be open until 5:00 p.m. on April 12, 2012.
If you have moved recently you need to re-register to vote. Voter registration is connected to your address. If you stay at the same address year after year, then you don’t ever have to re-register because your voter registration is automatically renewed every two years. However, whenever you move you have to re-register or you will eventually be removed from the voter roll. Even if you move within the same county, city, or even on the same street you have to re-register. You also need to re-register if you have made any changes to your mailing address. For example, if you had a PO Box last year, and now you don’t, then you need to re-register/update your address information. Everyone in Nacogdoches County who has registered to vote should receive a yellow and white voter certificate by April 25, 2012. Please contact the Elections Office by April 12, 2012 if you are not sure if you are registered to vote and we will gladly help you.
The individual entities conducting elections are now accepting applications for mail ballots. To qualify to vote by mail you must be 65 years of age or older, or have a disability, or be confined in jail, or be able to provide an address outside of Nacogdoches County if you will not be in Nacogdoches County during voting times. The last day for the individual entities conducting elections to accept/receive applications for mail ballots is May 4, 2012. Applications for mail ballots can be hand delivered to the individual entities conducting elections until Early Voting begins on April 30, 2012. Once Early Voting begins the applications have to be mailed to the individual entities conducting elections.
First time voters need to bring some form of ID in addition to or instead of their voter registration certificates. All other voters can present either their voter registration certificates or one of the appropriate forms of ID listed: 1. driver license or personal identification card, 2. a form of identification containing the person’s photograph that establishes the persons identity, 3. a birth certificate, 4. United States citizenship papers, 5. United States passport, 6. official mail addressed to the person by name from a government entity, 7. a copy of a current utility bill, bank statement, government check, paycheck, or other government document that shows the name and address of the voter, 8. any form of identification prescribed by the Secretary of State.
No campaign buttons, apparel, hats, or shirts are allowed in the polling place. No exceptions. Voters may bring in literature to the polling place regarding candidates or issues to use in the voting booths, but these materials are not to be left in the voting booths. No campaigning is allowed within 100 feet of a polling place.
Polls are open 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Election Day for all polling locations.
A public waiting area will be open at 7:00 p.m. on Election Night at the Courthouse Annex for the media and voters who want to receive printouts of election results as soon as they are available. Early Voting results will be released around 7:00 p.m. Final results for the elections are estimated to be available between 9:30 p.m. and 10:00 p.m. on Election Night.
I will be conducting a public test on Wednesday, May 4, 2012 at 4:30 p.m. of the electronic voting equipment to be used in the May 12, 2012 School Board and City Council Elections. It would be greatly appreciated if the Daily Sentinel would run an article on any aspect of the elections on Monday, May 2, 2012 and would include the following information somewhere in the story:
“A public test of the electronic voting equipment to be used in the May 12, 2012 Nacogdoches and Garrison Independent School District elections, and the Nacogdoches and Garrison City elections, will take place at 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday, May 4, 2012 in the Elections Office located within the Courthouse Annex Building – 203 W. Main St. – Nacogdoches, TX 75961.”
