    The Stephen F. Austin State University Ad Team won two top awards at the recent American Advertising Federation’s National Student Advertising Competition in Shreveport.

    Competing against 20 schools from five states, the SFA students won Best Promotion and the Judges’ Special Recognition award.

    Students from SFA’s art, marketing and mass communication departments worked for two semesters creating a national advertising campaign for Nissan. They completed research, strategy, print, radio/TV, new media, public relations and promotions, media plan, budget, and evaluation components of the campaign. The 32-page plans book was submitted and judged in March, and the live presentations took place during the two-day AAF conference in Shreveport, La.

    Team members Bobby King, Conrad Aleshire, Shannon Blow, Heather Scott and Travis Bruce presented SFA’s plan before a panel of advertising experts at the Shreveport Convention Center. About 30 SFA students who helped created the campaign attended the competition.

    David Murphy, co-president and director of strategic planning and integration for the national advertising firm Barrie D’Rozario Murphy, said the students’ creation of “Dr. Nissan” to prescribe innovation for consumers was “funny,” “cool” and “hip,” and that the SFA team “owned the room from the minute they started their presentation.”

    Judge Luciana Gomez of Dieste called SFA’s creative work “gutsy” and “edgy.” Lynnae Hornbarger, who serves on AAF’s Reno Board of Directors, said SFA gave an impressive presentation that made effective use of humor.

    Faculty advisers of the SFA Ad Team are Michael Tubbs of the School of Art; Dr. Marlene Kahla of the Department of Management, Marketing and International Business; and Dr. Linda Bond of the Department of Mass Communication.

    Dr. Karol Chandler-Ezell, assistant professor of anthropology at Stephen F. Austin State University, is the recipient of the Ruth Benedict Global Citizenship Award from the Center for a Public Anthropology.

    Named to honor one of the 20th century’s most prominent anthropologists, the award recognizes Chandler-Ezell’s exceptionally effective participation in Public Anthropology’s Community Action Online Project, as well as her wider activities in the public sphere. Less than 1 percent of college and university faculty members teaching introductory anthropology courses across North America receive this award.

    “Professor Chandler-Ezell is to be commended for how she takes classroom knowledge and applies it to real-world challenges, thereby encouraging students to be responsible global citizens,” said Dr. Rob Borofsky, director of the center. “In actively addressing important ethical concerns within anthropology, she is providing students with the thinking and writing skills needed for active citizenship.”

    Chandler-Ezell joined the faculty of SFA’s Department of Social and Cultural Analysis within the College of Liberal and Applied Arts in 2005. She teaches courses in cultural and physical anthropology; qualitative research methods; culture, health and illness; customs, folklore and traditions of America; and magic, cults and the supernatural.

    “One of the reasons I do the Public Anthropology project with my cultural anthropology classes is for participation in the SFA eCitizenship Initiative with the American Democracy Project,” she said. The project is a multi-campus initiative focused on higher education’s role in preparing the next generation of informed, engaged citizens.

    She is the author of “Historical Reenactors and ‘the Period Rush’: The Cultural Anthropology of Paracultures,” as well as book chapters on herbal medicine and tonic remedies in the United States. Her memberships include the Societies for Ethnobiology, Anthropology of Food and Nutrition, Phytolith Research, Anthropological Research, and Applied Anthropology, as well as the American Society for the Scientific Study of Religion and the Popular Culture Association/American Culture Association.

    Chandler-Ezell earned Bachelors of Science in both biology and physical science from the University of Central Arkansas, a Master of Science in botany from Oklahoma State University, a Master of Psychiatric Epidemiology from Washington University School of Medicine and a Doctor of Philosophy in anthropology from the University of Missouri-Columbia.
