U.S. Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison to visit SFA

U.S. Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison will visit Stephen F. Austin State University later this month for two special on-campus events. She will attend the grand opening and reception for the Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison Room Dec. 14 and offer the commencement address at fall graduation ceremonies Dec. 15.

Hutchison has served as senator since 1993, and she remains the only woman to represent the state of Texas in the U.S. Senate. Her current term expires in January, and she did not seek re-election.

Recently, Hutchison announced her decision to donate to SFA some of the artifacts representing her time in the Senate. The artifacts, which include service awards, photographs taken with world leaders and other items of historical interest, will be displayed in the Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison Room located on the second floor of the Ralph W. Steen Library. The public is invited to attend the grand opening and reception at 4 p.m. Friday, Dec. 14.

“We are extremely pleased to have been given the opportunity to help preserve Senator Hutchison’s proud legacy of service to our university, our community, our state and our nation by caring for and displaying her historical artifacts in Steen Library,” said SFA President Dr. Baker Pattillo.

“During Senator Hutchison’s tenure in the Senate, SFA has received federal funding to support important ongoing research in many areas, including education, forestry and agriculture,” he said. “She has been one of SFA’s strongest proponents in Washington, and the university is eternally grateful for her strong support and friendship throughout the years.”

The room’s design and furnishings will replicate as closely as possible the office Hutchison occupied in Washington, D.C. Display cases will hold many of the donated artifacts, which include a Houston Oilers football jersey bearing Hutchison’s name, a large-scale model of Space Shuttle Discovery, keys to many Texas cities and an 1853 Mitchell’s Universal Atlas once owned by Texas hero Thomas J. Rusk.

Rusk was the first Texan to hold the U.S. Senate seat Hutchison currently occupies. He and Hutchison’s great-great-grandfather, Charles S. Taylor, were friends, and both signed the Texas Declaration of Independence.

Hutchison has served in the Senate leadership. She was first elected vice chairman of the Republican Conference and later elected chairman of the Republican Policy Committee, becoming the fourth-highest ranking Republican senator.

She currently is the ranking member on the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation, and the Appropriations Subcommittee for Commerce, Justice and Science. She has been chairman of the Military Construction Appropriations Subcommittee and serves on the Defense Appropriations Subcommittee.

Hutchison is a member of the Republican National Hispanic Assembly National Advisory Committee. In 2012, she was unanimously elected chairman of the Board of Visitors at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. She previously served as chairman of the board from 1998 to 2000 and from 2008 to 2009 before being re-elected to serve again this year.

Hutchison grew up in La Marque and graduated from the University of Texas and UT Law School. She was twice elected to the Texas House of Representatives and, in 1990, was elected Texas state treasurer. In June 2000, she and several colleagues co-authored “Nine and Counting: The Women of the Senate,” and in 2004, she released her first book, “American Heroines: The Spirited Women Who Shaped Our Country.” Hutchison published her most recent bestseller, “Leading Ladies: American Trailblazers,” in October 2007.

Hutchison lives in Dallas with her husband, Ray, and their two children, Bailey and Houston.

SFA fall commencement ceremonies will begin at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 15, at William R. Johnson Coliseum. More than 980 degrees will be awarded, including 825 bachelor’s degrees, 157 master’s degrees and one doctoral degree. More than 180 students will graduate with honors, including 75 cum laude, 48 magna cum laude and 5 summa cum laude.

SFA Gardens lecture series to feature Director David Creech

The SFA Gardens at Stephen F. Austin State University will host the monthly Theresa and Les Reeves Lecture Series at 7 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 13, in Room 110 of the Agriculture Building located at 1924 Wilson Drive.

Dr. David Creech, professor emeritus in the Arthur Temple College of Forestry and Agriculture, will present “Why Daniel Burnham was right when he said, ‘Make no little plans; they have no magic to stir men’s blood.’”

Creech has been on the SFA faculty since 1978 and is director and founder of the SFA Mast Arboretum, Ruby Mize Azalea Garden and Gayla Mize Garden. He is co-director of the Pineywoods Native Plant Center and was named SFA Regents Professor for the 2006-07 academic year.

Creech received his bachelor’s and doctoral degrees from Texas A&M University and his master’s degree from Colorado State. His research efforts have focused on blueberry germplasm and production studies, alternative crops and technology, crop nutrition, and evaluation of new plant materials for the South. He and his wife Janet are both active gardeners and love to travel.

The Theresa and Les Reeves Lecture Series is normally held the third Thursday of each month at the Arthur Temple College of Forestry and Agriculture’s SFA Mast Arboretum. However, due to the Christmas break, the lecture is being held the second Thursday in December. A rare plant raffle will be held after the program. The lecture is free and open to the public, but donations to the Theresa and Les Reeves Lecture Series fund always are appreciated.

Herrington: Pain is a lonely dysfunction

Chris Herrington, Contributing Writer

Have you ever done something that you regret but then you can’t have not done it so it will not go away? I had a bicycle wreck and messed up my shoulder, and it is having some sort of laughing spell, trying to make me feel like I have not learned my lesson. I wrote this poem about the constant pain I am feeling about it.

Unrelentless

Pain is an aching presence
that gnaws at your will to enjoy life.

The constant spur of an angled knife
the tip of which is the reason to wince
takes its time and then yours.

You wake in a sweat and leave in a huff
and you slightly twist and your world goes off.

The regret for whatever it was that
started this ill framed sadness
jumble rolls awkwardly in and out.

Wringing hands and a flurry of pills,
constant discomfort and a head unclear.

Madness is a love letter from an anxious troll
whose only concern is to prod your spiraling
into a closet of anguish and sorrow.

Son of a bitch make it go away
and tell me the sunshine has been hiding
behind the roof.

But it’s morning, and my old hint
has my attention, and I can’t find
my shadow; oh, it’s me.

The really funny and ironic thing is that I am a writer and typing hurts like a baseball bat to the forehead. Nor that this is an all bad thing. It makes me really concentrate on what I am saying because it makes me really want to say it since it is going to be a painful thing to do. Knocking out a 1000 words is like jumping off a cliff and landing on your back. At the end of every sentence I do reflexology on my arm and then scramble at it for another line.

My typing skills have always been a silly masquerade of pretending I knew where the keys were, but now even when I look at the board and really focus, the whole event becomes an awkward dance at a one-legged convention. My physical turret’s has given me a sense of disaccomplishment. I type 50 letters and 30 of them are off.

You would think that slowing down would be more helpful but it is a race against exhaustion. If I slow down too much there is not enough flow for the words to dribble out. Sometimes I have to stop for some letter combinations and hand pick each key like I am picking out 100 dozen donuts at Shipley’s. All different and looking like sets in Gin Rummy. 3 cake, 2 sprinkle pinks, one fat chocolate with banana crème filling….Oh, God, only 500 words to go.

Look, what if I don’t wash the dishes and I don’t need to fold the towels? I can get more-smaller meals and not be so delicate in my lifestyle. The dust can settle in and the cat box can last one more day. I’ll get an ice pack or get in the hot tub, take some more Advil, and watch more TV. Pain is like a teenager with an itch. Now, where was that comfortable position? It was right over here somewhere.

Why is it everything in my head includes a word you can’t say on the radio? Look, I’m going to call this short and live with it. I am sure you have had something that grabbed you hard and wouldn’t let go. I’m 2/3 there and it’s all I’ve got. What a baby sissy! Man, when everything you want is there on the tip of your fingers and your arm won’t fold to put it into your mouth it is hard to taste life in all of its glory. I think I’ll go watch TV and find a racquetball game so I can tell the pros what to do. This is what depression looks like only 3 weeks in. I can’t imagine, and I hope I don’t have to.
