Herrington: This Electronic Age

Chris Herrington, Contributing Writer

A friend of mine was having trouble with her electric toothbrush one day. Not to be outdone by any piece of technology hardware, she called the number on the warranty and was told to read the toothbrush’s serial number into the phone and then to replace the said toothbrush onto the recharging stand. It was not plugged into the computer, and she did not have Wi-Fi. The toothbrush blinked a few times and went through some little electronic dance, and then the operator asked her to try it now. It turned right on. It was reprogrammed through the electrical system. Huh!

Between the RFDI tags and all the cameras we have going, we might wonder where this will all end up. If live data promises anything, it is that privacy as a concept is over. Being off the grid entirely is for guys like Rambo.

Just like this story illustrates the upward spiral of how technology is seeping into our lives, we could say that the overlap of our own personal energies is now at a point of saturation. We are literally standing toe to toe with each other. We have the dubious distinction of becoming the first humans in history to have reached this primary stage of social saturation. We are now in for pressurization. This is not all bad since I believe in the idea that whatever we touch touches us back.

There are two things that I find hopeful. First, kids are capable of doing amazing things. I am seeing a generation of young people who are becoming activists. They have a sense of urgency in their step. They know that the old paradigm has not made their parents happy. You have to love what you are doing. They are opting for understanding and sensitivity. Parents are freaking out about this. Yes, there are many who are caught up in the net of self-satisfaction, but every week I get calls from kids who have been out in the world and are totally appalled by what they see. They want change, not more of the same.

Secondly, and you may have an even better eye on this than I do, I find that the venture capitalists are loaded flush with cash. The pent up capital cannot long be put on hold….they want to make money and are eyeing every project. I think we are in for a wild ride of new speculation on every horizon because they have held off now for 4 years……this allowed Obama to appear to be the bad guy. I keep hearing about 12,000,0000 new jobs….well, IMHO, the truth is that Mickey Mouse could be our next president and it does not matter….at a certain point the flood gates of investigative investing will open up and there is going to be a surge in capitalism that is going to blow everyone’s minds.

These guys will not hold out until some perfect time in the future, because the good side of greed is that it works to serve itself as a matter of course. This Mexican standoff of not going first is so busting at the seams that as soon as the election is over the scramble will be on. I look for the DOW to go through the roof by March…..we have too much cash and as soon as one huge take over sets up in place, the entire domino will roll over. There is zero chance that businesses will continue to tighten up for 4 more years just to spite Obama. Let’s make some money….regardless, is what they are thinking. The evil side of greed wants to have it all…and this is what we face….the ultra conservatives are heading us into national poverty… I know that Romney was all about helping retrain workers and making sure that we beef up education, but that would take federal dollars being spent on national programs; that is not an agenda that is on the horizon for Romney backers. Quite the opposite. If the ultras have their way, we will get rid of any higher ed help, and the educational system will be turned into vouchers to support private schoolers. There will be no national program to retrofit workers and when unemployment runs out and the social net is gutted we will simply be saving tax dollars to lower the debt. Period.

We do not need these workers anymore, and so we need to crank up a new information based economy. Right now they, advertisers and the media, want to use live data as the control. BUT. ……The real value lies in the untapped potential of those kids. It only takes a few geniuses to change everything, and, BABY, the young brainiacs are on the way…every reality show that begs for talent has been training our kids to think in terms of QUALITY of presentation… And innovation is where we shine….so my point..

Venture capitalists plus talented quality-minded kids equals more and better service to Americans…instead of cheaper junk, we want quality value with meaning. And it is on the way. I have high hopes….I spent 33 training the little monsters, and I see great things. I am Dr. Funkenstein, and my work is now coming into play. I see them on Facebook, and they are a force to be reckoned with.

Crank up the tooth brush, honey, we are going surfing on the Internet!

Train depot exhibit to feature accidents, derailments

NACOGDOCHES, Texas – Just in time for Halloween, an exhibit titled “Blood on the Tracks: Wrecks, Derailments and Collisions” is being hosted by Stephen F. Austin State University’s Center for Regional Heritage Research at the Nacogdoches Historic Depot, 101 Old Tyler Road.

An exhibit regarding train accidents is being hosted by Stephen F. Austin State University’s Center for Regional Heritage Research at the Nacogdoches Historic Depot through Nov. 16. In addition to the railway industry’s response to accidents, information regarding the impact of accidents on the practice of medicine, including prosthetics, is included in the exhibit.

Kelley Snowden, research associate for the center, said the exhibit provides a brief look into the types of accidents that occurred and the responses of railway companies.

“We discovered that railway companies spawned a new profession, the railway surgeon, to better address the types of injuries suffered by employees,” Snowden said. “They created ‘hospital cars’ that could be brought to the scene of accidents to provide emergency care, and they also established their own hospitals.”

In its early years, railroad work and travel could be quite hazardous. Accidents, derailments and collisions – either between two trains or an automobile and a train – were not uncommon, and injuries frequently included limb loss. This spawned growth and development of another business – the production of artificial limbs (prosthetics). With no regulations in place at the time, the promises made to patients needing prosthetics were frequently outrageous, Snowden said.

This exhibit will continue through Nov. 16. Hours are 11 a.m. until 3 p.m. Tuesdays through Thursdays, and Friday hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Obituary: Thomas Wilson Wright

Tom Wright passed into eternal life early Monday morning. Tom lived a long and fruitful life in East Texas, and he was a gracious and honorable man, a gentleman from sole to crown. Stephen F. Austin State University and Nacogdoches have lost a loving and giving man.
Thomas Wilson Wright was born in Rockbridge Baths, Virginia, on April 18, 1918. He moved with his family to Nacogdoches in 1930, when his father, M.S. Wright, founded Texas Farm Products Company.
Tom graduated from Nacogdoches High School in 1934, attended Stephen F. Austin State Teachers College, and spent a year at Draughan’s Business College, after which he joined his father and brothers at Texas Farm Products.
Tom was the war hero of the Wright clan. He joined the National Guard in 1940 and was called up for a year’s service in January of ’41. Pearl Harbor changed one year into five. Tom was a “ninety-day wonder” and received his lieutenant’s bars in 1942.
In 1942 and home on leave, Tom fell in love with the beautiful Peggy Wedgeworth. After a whirlwind love affair, Tom and Peggy married that September. They had a few months of married life, but in April of 1943, Tom was shipped overseas to the fighting in North Africa.
Tom engaged in some of the fiercest action in the war as the Allies crossed to Sicily and Anzio Beach, went up the road to Rome, and then on into the fighting in France and Germany. Tom was stationed in Austria on V-E Day. He spent the summer of 1945 in the occupation of Germany and finally came home in September of that year.
During World War II Tom Wright spent twenty-nine months overseas, with twenty-five of those months in the most active of the combat zones. He was discharged with rank of major.
Tom spent his working life with Texas Farm Products, working in sales at the bottom to managerial at the top. In 1983 he became Chairman of the Board and Chief Executive Officer. In 1988 Tom retired as CEO and President of Texas Farm Products but remained as Chairman of the Board until 2011. Tom also served as Chairman of The Fertilizer Institute (TFI), a national fertilizer organization.
Tom lived an exciting and active life. He was an avid golfer, duck hunter, fisherman, and skier. He and Peggy traveled the wide world over. Cruising the ocean’s waters was one of their favorite pursuits. He was the longest tenured member of the Nacogdoches Rotary Club and received the Paul Harris Fellow Award twice. He was also a tenured member of the Nacogdoches Pineywoods Country Club.
Tom was a devout Christian and served the Westminster Presbyterian Church as deacon, elder, and building-committee member. At the time of Tom’s death he was the longest tenured active member of Westminster Presbyterian Church.
For all his years of service to his business, his church, and Nacogdoches generally, his and Peggy’s most lasting gifts have been to Stephen F. Austin State University. They originally founded the prestigious Wedgeworth Lecture Series. That gift was enlarged to become the Wedgeworth-Wright Endowment for the Arts. The SFA music building was named the Tom and Peggy Wright Music Building. Tom also founded a golf scholarship on campus and was a loyal SFA sports fan.
Tom was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Elizabeth; his brothers, Steele, Joe, and Dick.
Tom is survived by his wife, Peggy Wedgeworth Wright; his daughters, Peggy Wright Pollock and Kitty Wright Dippel and husband Skipper; his grandchildren and spouses, Meg and Dathan Voelter, Tee and Sunny Dippel, Beth and Tres Masser, Margaret and Bryant Fitts, Caroline and Jason Peters, and Laura Pollock.
Tom and Peggy have fourteen great-grandchildren and many beloved nieces and nephews. Tom was blessed by a large and loving family. Loved members of Tom’s extended family include Delores Mallory, Anna Gonzales, and Maria Venegas.
The Wright family thanks Keesha Curtis, Belinda Wallace, Ashton Whitaker, Charles Royal, and Kashsece Gregory for their care and concern. They thank Dr. Sergio Moreira and Dr. Richard Baker for their concern and close medical attention over these past few months.
Funeral services include a Lying-in-State at the Westminster Presbyterian Church (903 North Street) from 5:00 pm until 7:00 pm on Wednesday, October 24, 2012.
A Graveside service will be held at 10:00 am Thursday, October 25, 2012, at Sunset Memorial Park (5127 North Street) across the street from Cason Monk-Metcalf Funeral Directors.
A Memorial service will follow at Westminster Presbyterian Church from 11:00 am until 12 noon on Thursday, October 25, 2012.
Pallbearers will be Tieman Dippel, Jr., Tieman Dippel, III,Dathan Voelter, Tres Masser, Bryant Fitts, Jason Peters, Ray Rinker, Raymond Rinker, Robert Rinkers, M.S. (Bud) Wright, III, Jim Kingham, George Clark, Mark Clark, Vyrne Shofner, David Shofner, A.L. Mangham, Travis Mast, John Mast, Richard Wright, Baker Patillo, Ab Abernethy, and John Wallace.
In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to the charity of your choice.
