Dr. A.C. “Buddy” Himes, left, dean of the SFA College of Fine Arts, and Nacogdoches Mayor Roger Van Horn, right, recognized sponsors of the 2012 Winner’s Circle awards, including Travis Clardy, who hosted the reception and fundraiser in his home, Kayla Rhodes, mortgage lender for Region’s Bank, Jan Dawley, branch service leader with Regions Bank, and Gary Stokes, CEO of Nacogdoches Medical Center. Other sponsors were Cal-Tex Lumber Company, First Bank and Trust and Flashback Café.

The Clardys were also presented with a gift for having opened up their home for the program, and Clardy was commended as having been elected as the new state representative representing Nacogdoches, Cherokee and Rusk counties.
The event also served as a fundraiser for the Dean’s Circle with current and former students, faculty and supporters of the College of Fine Arts donating items for a silent auction.
The Dean’s Circle is an auxiliary group of community members founded in 2008 and dedicated, in part, to nurturing potential young artists within the College of Fine Arts, according to College of Fine Arts Dean Dr. A.C. “Buddy” Himes.
NACOGDOCHES, TEXAS – Stephen F. Austin State University College of Fine Arts and School of Music will present “Sing!” – a concert by Choral Union and Women’s Choir of new and old mini-masterpieces – at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 30, in Cole Concert Hall in the Tom and Peggy Wright Music Building on the SFA campus.

The SFA Choral Union (pictured) and Women’s Chorus will perform in concert at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 30, in Cole Concert Hall on the SFA campus. The performance is part of the SFA College of Fine Arts and School of Music’s Concert Series.
“‘Sing!’ is something of a sampler concert of favorite choral works new and old,” said David Howard, associate director of choral activities and the choirs’ director. “Choral Union will perform pieces featured on our concerts with Orchestra of the Pines and with the Turtle Creek Chorale in Dallas, while Women’s Choir will perform a largely unaccompanied program of exciting contemporary works.”
Among the pieces featured in “Sing!” are G.F. Handel’s Zadok the Priest, which is often sung at coronations, Hubert Hastings Parry’s “I Was Glad,” sung at the royal wedding, Johann Hasse’s “Benigne fac” from Miserere in C Minor and Jonathan Dove’s It sounded as if the Street were running.
Accompanying the Choral Union will be pianist Geneva Fung, and accompanying the Women’s Choir will be graduate student and pianist Bruno Ribeiro along with a string quartet.
Choral Union is an auditioned 75-voice mixed chorus comprised of music majors and talented non-music majors at SFA. The Choral Union performs a wide range of repertoire from renaissance polyphony to contemporary unaccompanied works.
The Women’s Choir is a 20-voice ensemble of music and non-music majors at SFA. The Women’s Choir affords female singers the opportunity to explore treble repertoire from the last 500 years with a special emphasis on contemporary works.
The performances are part of the College of Fine Arts and School of Music’s Concert Series. Tickets are $5 for adults, $4 for seniors and $2 for students. For tickets or more information, call (936) 468-6407 or visit www.finearts.sfasu.edu.
NACOGDOCHES, TEXAS – The Stephen F. Austin State University School of Music will present “Well-Tempered Keyboards,” a collaborative project for piano and keyboard percussion featuring percussionist Robert Crutchfield and pianist Dr. Maria Guénette. The performance will be at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 28, in Cole Concert Hall on the SFA campus.

“Well-Tempered Keyboards” features percussionist Robert Crutchfield and pianist Dr. Maria Guénette in a performance at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 28, in Cole Concert Hall on the SFA campus.
WTK has given concerts and premiered several Japanese works in the United States and Canada. In addition, the duo is pursuing short-term educational residencies and has given master classes.
Guénette made her musical debut at 14 with the Windsor Symphony Orchestra. Since then, she has appeared in numerous solo and collaborative performances in Canada, the U.S., Japan and Austria, including appearances on public radio stations. She is also keyboardist for the East Texas Symphony Orchestra and serves as an accompanist/vocal coach in the Dallas/Fort Worth area. She is an adjunct faculty member at the University of Texas at Tyler and an examiner for The Royal Conservatory of Music Examinations and The Carnegie Hall Royal Conservatory Achievement Program.
Crutchfield is percussion instructor at the University of Texas at Tyler and Trinity Valley Community College. He teaches percussion lessons at area middle schools and high schools in the Dallas/Fort Worth area. He also plays in the percussion section with the Longview Symphony and the Shreveport Symphony.
“It is a pleasure to have Robert Crutchfield and Maria Guénette on campus for this event,” Harris said. “It’s very exciting for the SFA percussion students and faculty to hear new compositions for marimba and piano.
“Surprisingly, this instrument combination is not as common as with other orchestral instruments,” he said. “The marimba is typically a solo and/or chamber music instrument, so I personally look forward to the colorful combinations of the piano and marimba.”
The performance is free. For more information, call (936) 468-4602.
