Tickets still available for Kuerti performance at SFA

Tickets are still available for the upcoming performance of internationally acclaimed pianist Anton Kuerti, who will present a concert on the campus of Stephen F. Austin State University as part of the SFA College of Fine Art’s 2012-13 University Series.

Kuerti’s performance is slated for 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 24, in W.M. Turner Auditorium in the Griffith Fine Arts Building.

Before the performance, there will be a 7 p.m. informative talk presented by Ann Saslov, concert artist and a longtime friend of Kuerti, in Griffith Gallery, located across the hall from Turner Auditorium. The audience is invited back to the gallery for a post-performance reception to honor the event’s corporate sponsor, Cataract, Glaucoma & Retina Consultants of East Texas – Benchmark Optical.

Nacogdoches Naturally announces spring, summer events

Mark your calendar for the upcoming 2013 Family Outdoor Adventures planned through Nacogdoches Naturally, an outdoor education component of the Stephen F. Austin State University Gardens.

Nacogdoches Naturally will participate in Kid Fish from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 26, at Lakeside Park, 4800 Pearl St. This event is organized by The City of Nacogdoches Parks and Recreation Department and supported by Texas Parks and Wildlife, Coastal Conservation Association, Doug James Bass Fishing Guide, Fish East Texas Lakes, General Mills, Nacogdoches Bass Club, Head Start, Suddenlink and SFA.

Drawings for prizes will be held throughout the day, and major fishing prizes for ages 0 to 8 and 9 to 16 will be awarded at the end of the day. Nacogdoches Naturally will be demonstrating outdoor cooking, as well as offering Junior Angler education through the Texas Parks and Wildlife Angler Education program. “We have numerous exciting outdoor weekend programs scheduled beginning in January and extending into July,” said Kerry Lemon, project director of Nacogdoches Naturally. “These events offer opportunities for families to experience a variety of outdoor recreational activities. We encourage families to take advantage of our programming and the chance to visit some of the beautiful, natural areas in East Texas.”

Nacogdoches Naturally is sponsored by SFA’s Pineywoods Native Plant Center and funded through a “More Kids in the Woods” grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture-U.S. Forest Service.

Plant Sale: 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.; Earth Day: 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.; SFA Pineywoods Native Plant Center; free.

May 4: Day trip to Boykin Springs Recreation Area

8 a.m. to 4 p.m.; Angelina National Forest in Zavalla.

July 13: Picnic and Water Fun

10 a.m. to 2 p.m.; West Park Lake Nacogdoches; Location subject to change due to lake conditions.

Educational programs are held at SFA Pineywoods Native Plant Center, 2900 Raguet St. For day trips, participants meet at the SFA Pineywoods Native Plant Center and travel to the site. Unless otherwise noted, the cost for educational events is $10 per family. Day trip cost is $15 per family using a personal vehicle or $25 per family using SFA van transportation.

Obituary: Rachel Oline Whitehead

Mrs. Rachel Oline Whitehead, 68, of Etoile, Texas, went to be with her Lord and Savior on Monday, January 21, 2013, at Presbyterian Hospital in Denton, Texas.
Born July 24, 1944, in Chireno, Texas, to parents Roy Gregston and Allie Bryant Gregston, Mrs. Whitehead had been a longtime resident of the Etoile area and graduated from Woden High School. She retired from Lufkin State School after 22 years of service. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star.
Mrs. Whitehead loved God, her family, grandchildren, Christmas, and her four-legged companion, Daisy. She and her family were well-known for the outstanding Christmas decorations spanning two-acres at their home each year.
Her survivors include her husband of 50 years, Gaylon Ottis “Ben” Whitehead; daughter, Gayline Whitehead; sister, Betty M. Redfearn and husband Dale; brother, Ferriel Gregston and wife Marsha; and grandchildren, Hunter Whitehead, Codie Whitehead, and Jodie Whitehead, and their mother, Carrie Pace.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her son, Benton Whitehead, in 2008.
Funeral services are set for 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, January 23, 2013, at Etoile United Pentecostal Church, located at 168 Hwy. 103 in Etoile, with Pastor Glenn D. Morton officiating. Interment will follow at Blue Springs Cemetery, located on FM 226 South in Etoile.
Visitation will be held from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. at the church.
Pallbearers: Ted Schooley, Ray Bryant, Larry Bryant, Bart Coleson, Dolen Hill, and John Morton.
Family members suggest that memorial gifts may be made to Etoile United Pentecostal Church, 168 Hwy. 103, Etoile, TX 75944.

ANTIQUE SIGN STOLEN

Nacogdoches Crime Stoppers is offering a CASH REWARD of up to $1,000.00 for information that leads to the arrest or grand jury indictment of the person(s) responsible for stealing an antique sign from a shop in the 400 block of East Main.

THIS IS A PHOTOGRAPH OF ONE OF THE FIVE YUBA OIL COMPANY SIGNS KNOWN TO EXIST. THE STOLEN SIGN IS PAINED IDENTICAL TO THIS ONE.

The Yureco Motor Oil sign was taken sometime between 11/15 and 12/24. The sign measures approximately 14” X 28” and is painted like the one in the picture.

Obituary: Dorothy Mae Cooper

Mrs. Dorothy Mae Cooper of Nacogdoches County, Texas, passed away Saturday, January 19, 2013, at a Nacogdoches hospital at the age of 77.

Mrs. Cooper was born July 10, 1935, in Humble, Texas, though Nacogdoches County had been her home for the past several years.

She enjoyed taking care of her family as well as tending the animals and crops on their farm. Dorothy and her husband spent many happy hours together while fishing.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Marvin C. Cooper, on June 28, 2007.

Her survivors include her sons and daughter-in-law, Marvin Glyn and Mellisa Cooper of Nacogdoches County, Texas, and Roy Farmer of Lufkin, Texas; a daughter and son-in-law, Doris and Bobby Whited of Elgin, Texas; along with nine grandchildren; and a number of great-grandchildren as well as great-great-grandchildren.

Graveside rites are set for 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 23, 2013, at Linn Flat Cemetery, located on County Road 929, with Bro. Richard Russell officiating.

Visitation will be held Tuesday, Jan. 22, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Cason Monk-Metcalf.
