Nacogdoches Naturally announces spring, summer events

Mark your calendar for the upcoming 2013 Family Outdoor Adventures planned through Nacogdoches Naturally, an outdoor education component of the Stephen F. Austin State University Gardens.

Nacogdoches Naturally will participate in Kid Fish from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 26, at Lakeside Park, 4800 Pearl St. This event is organized by The City of Nacogdoches Parks and Recreation Department and supported by Texas Parks and Wildlife, Coastal Conservation Association, Doug James Bass Fishing Guide, Fish East Texas Lakes, General Mills, Nacogdoches Bass Club, Head Start, Suddenlink and SFA.

Drawings for prizes will be held throughout the day, and major fishing prizes for ages 0 to 8 and 9 to 16 will be awarded at the end of the day. Nacogdoches Naturally will be demonstrating outdoor cooking, as well as offering Junior Angler education through the Texas Parks and Wildlife Angler Education program. “We have numerous exciting outdoor weekend programs scheduled beginning in January and extending into July,” said Kerry Lemon, project director of Nacogdoches Naturally. “These events offer opportunities for families to experience a variety of outdoor recreational activities. We encourage families to take advantage of our programming and the chance to visit some of the beautiful, natural areas in East Texas.”

Nacogdoches Naturally is sponsored by SFA’s Pineywoods Native Plant Center and funded through a “More Kids in the Woods” grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture-U.S. Forest Service.

Feb. 9: Day trip to Ragtown Recreation Area

8 a.m. to 4 p.m.; Sabine National Forest.

March 2: Hiking local Nacogdoches trails

9 a.m. to noon; Lanana Creek and Recreational Trails.

April 6: Day trip to Ratcliff Lake

8 a.m. to 4 p.m., Davy Crockett National Forest.

April 20: SFA Garden Gala Plant Sale and Earth Day

Plant Sale: 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.; Earth Day: 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.; SFA Pineywoods Native Plant Center; free.

May 4: Day trip to Boykin Springs Recreation Area

8 a.m. to 4 p.m.; Angelina National Forest in Zavalla.

July 13: Picnic and Water Fun

10 a.m. to 2 p.m.; West Park Lake Nacogdoches; Location subject to change due to lake conditions.

Educational programs are held at SFA Pineywoods Native Plant Center, 2900 Raguet St. For day trips, participants meet at the SFA Pineywoods Native Plant Center and travel to the site. Unless otherwise noted, the cost for educational events is $10 per family. Day trip cost is $15 per family using a personal vehicle or $25 per family using SFA van transportation.
