Virginia Faye Montgomery, a loving wife, beloved mother, grandmother, friend and dedicated servant of her Lord, passed away on April 30, 2013 at the age of 85. Born July 25, 1927 in Port Arthur, Texas, she was the daughter of Rubert and Madie Harrington.
Jenny’s private entombment will take place at Sunset Memorial Park Mausoleum. A “Celebration of Life” ceremony will be held on Sunday, May 5, 2013 at 2:30 pm at Cason Monk-Metcalf Sunset Chapel, officiated by Rev. John Bingham. A reception will follow directly after the service at the funeral home.
Virginia’s parents and brother, Jes Harrington, preceded her in death.
She is survived by her husband, Melvin B. Montgomery; son, Donald G. Montgomery and spouse Mari of Huntsville, Tx; daughter, Jill Ann Glenn Montgomery and spouse Victor of Conroe, Tx; four grandchildren, Glenn Montgomery, Neil McClure, Ian Huntoon and Amber Huntoon; grandpuppy, Carmencita; brother, John Harrington and spouse Faye; brother-in- law, Dr. John Montgomery and spouse Alma; six nephews and two nieces.
Mrs. Montgomery grew up in Port Arthur where she graduated from high school. After attending Lamar University for two years she transferred to Sam Houston State University where she received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Elementary Education. Later, she received a Master of Arts degree from Stephen F. Austin State University.
While a student at Sam Houston she met Melvin Montgomery. Both were members of the trombone section in the Sam Houston Bearcat Band. Their musical relationship led to their marriage on May 22, 1948 in Port Arthur. Following their marriage they both became teachers in the Port Arthur ISD. Virginia followed a teaching career as a Language Arts teacher for 35 years in Bridge City, Port Arthur, Snyder, and Nacogdoches school systems.
Virginia, lovingly known as Jenny, was a lover of nature, its beauties and it’s creatures. Her hobbies included gardening, bird watching, growing butterflies, crafts, reading and travel. She was a longtime member and officer of the Pines Garden Club, the Nacogdoches Retired Teachers Association and Texas State Teachers Association. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church for over forty years and loved attending the Open Door Sunday School Class.
Jenny passed away after a long battle with cancer that was diagnosed in 1979. The family extends deep appreciation for the special care she received from Dr. John Montgomery, Dr. Art Trowbridge, Dr. Dudley Baker and nephew, Dr. Mark Montgomery and the staff of Scott and White Hospital and Clinic of Temple, Texas and the Huntsville Cancer Center, and oncologist nurse, Cindy May.
In Lieu of flowers memorial donations may be offered in memory of Virginia to the Mel Montgomery Band Scholarship at Stephen F. Austin, SFS Alumni Association, PO Box 6096, SFA Station, Nacogdoches, Tx, 75962-6096 or First United Methodist Church, 201 E. Hospital, Nacogdoches, Tx, 75961.

Kim Marie Baxter, 34, known as Kimmy to those who loved her most, was born in Longview, TX on April 12, 1979. Kim left this world peacefully on Tuesday, April 30, 2013. Kim is survived by her loving husband of eleven years, Jason Baxter and her two and a half year old daughter, Jillian Claire Baxter, who is the light of both of their lives; mother, Cat Janson; brother, Jud Janson and sister, Amanda White Johnson. Other survivors include father-in-law, J.W. Baxter; mother-in-law, Alta (Toni) Baxter; Sisters-in-law, Melanie Baxter Richmond, Anita Howard and husband Dody Howard; Brothers-in-law, John Bradley Baxter and fiance’, Loren Fesi, and Jeffery Baxter and wife, Misty Murphy; and her nieces and nephews (her kiddos), Mindy Marie Howard, Marc Howard, Morgan Sadler, Taylor Baxter, Jake Baxter, Kaitlyn Baxter, Jared Richmond, Madison Baxter, Hailey Baxter, Jayden Baxter, Austin Johnson and Blake Johnson; and her great nieces, Izzabella Harmon and Stephanie Sadler. Kim was preceded in death by her maternal grandparents, Charles and Clara Botehlo.
Kim and Jason were married on May 24, 2002. They welcomed their beautiful daughter, Jillian, in 2010. Kim considered education very important. Kim loved being a wife and mother as her family was most important to her. Kim considered education extremely important. She attained her Associates of Business from Angelina College, her Bachelor’s of Business from Stephen F. Austin State University, and her Master of Business from LeTourneau University. Kim had a passion for singing. She had a beautiful voice and participated in several Lamplight musicals and also sang at Relay for Life as a cancer survivor herself to honor the survivors. Kim was always willing to help others through anything even when she faced her own struggles and adversities.
A Memorial Service will be held Saturday, May 4, 2013 at 5pm at Cason Monk Funeral Home in Nacogdoches. Visitation will be held from 4-5pm on Saturday, May 4, 2013 immediately preceding service. Honorary pallbearers will be the Honor Guard of Kilgore Fire Dept., Walter Herrera, Shawn Hays, Mathew Wedgeworth, and Casey Moore. A memorial funds account has been established at Regions Bank. Benefit Car Wash by the Kilgore Fire Dept. will be held for family on Sunday, May 5, 2013 at Kilgore Wal-Mart from 9am – 2pm. In lieu of flowers, Kim’s family requests your consideration of donations to the American Cancer Society and/or Hospice of East Texas, Tyler.
C & R Kutt Bottle – Creative Glass recycling will be set up this Saturday. They sell drinking glasses, flower vases, self-watering planters, wind chimes and hurricane lamps all made from recycled glass. All the proceeds go to ‘Habitat for Humanity’.

The Nacogdoches Farmers’ Market, located at the “hitch lot” at the corner of West Main and Pearl Streets, is open from 8 a.m. until noon or later every Saturday morning. If the market parking lot is full, additional parking is available in the Nacogdoches County Courthouse Annex parking lot. Our Wednesday markets our back so you can shop the Farmer’s Market every Wednesday, from 2 to 6 p.m.

The Stephen F. Austin State University Offices of Admissions and Public Affairs received two awards during the recent Council for Advancement and Support of Education’s District IV conference in Fort Worth.

The SFA Offices of Public Affairs and Admissions received two Council for Advancement and Support of Education awards at the District IV Conference for their viewbook and photography submissions. Hardy Meredith, university photographer, received a Bronze (third place) Award. His image titled “Directional Force” was honored in the black-and-white photography category and pictures a dancer with the SFA Repertory Dance Company.
“The CASE Awards are judged by our higher education colleagues and help us validate our collateral materials are meeting their goals,” Shirley Luna, SFA executive director of marketing and public affairs, said. “Consistently, SFA’s submissions are recognized by our peers, and I commend our staff members on their hard work and dedication.”
CASE is the organization for advancement professionals working in alumni relations, communications, fundraising, marketing and related areas. Membership includes more than 3,400 colleges, universities, independent elementary and secondary schools, and educational associates in more than 60 countries around the world. SFA is part of CASE District IV, which encompasses Arkansas, Louisiana, Mexico, New Mexico, Oklahoma and Texas.
