Vehicle stop regarding the smuggling of illegal aliens
Around 1 a.m. , deputies with the Nacogdoches County Sheriff Office stopped a grey Nissan sport utility vehicle for a traffic violation on Hwy. 59, which was north bound. Deputies received information from the department of homeland security that the vehicle may be smuggling illegal aliens.
Deputies made contact with the driver and observed several other occupants inside the motor vehicle. There were a total of 10 foreign nationals inside of the car. All subjects inside the motor vehicle were males believed to be from Mexico that had entered the United States illegally. The Department of Homeland Security responded to the scene and interviewed the subjects. It was then confirmed that the subjects were illegal aliens that had entered into the United States illegally.
A detainer was placed on all the subjects and they were transported to the Nacogdoches County Jail. The subjects are being held for the Department of Homeland Security, which have made arraignments to transport the subjects to a federal holding facility.

SFA to host Lufkin Lunch and Learn
Improving educational opportunities that lead to careers in science, technology and math will be the topic of an Alumni Lunch and Learn at noon Thursday at Crown Colony Country Club, 900 Crown Colony Drive.

The primary goal of the STEM Research and Learning Center is to increase the number of students who are interested in and academically prepared for careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics. The center strives to facilitate innovation in STEM university education, provide support for student mentoring during educational transition periods, guide teacher induction during the first three years in the classroom, and empower them to assist in transforming their districts.
“These endeavors will directly address the pressing demand for a technologically advanced workforce by increasing STEM knowledge, capacity and expertise,” said Childs, who holds degrees from SFA, Dallas Baptist University and Texas A&M University.

TSRR’s 15th Annual Salute to the Armed Forces event set for Saturday, May 25
On Saturday, May 25, the Texas State Railroad will host its 15th annual Salute to the Armed Forces event at the Palestine Depot. The event has been reinvented this year to return it to its original focus of paying tribute to all branches and all eras of U.S. military service.
It will feature military re-enactment groups from multiple wars, living history exhibits, static military displays, military support groups and equipment displays by area first responders.
Committed participants include: American Red Cross, Lone Star Military Resource Group, Lone Star Military Farmers, Cub Scout Pack 256, AAA Texas, Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 991, Disabled American Veterans Chapter 63, Women on the Home Front, Uniform Exhibit, Texas State Railroad Society, White Cross Exhibit, Vintage Military Memorabilia sale, John H. Reagan Camp 2156, 1st United States Volunteers–K Troop, WWII Military Police Command Post, Military Operating Room, Camp Lili–WWII Communications Tent, Dog Company–101st Airborne Unit, Palestine Regional Medical Center, Texas Department of Public Safety, Palestine Police Department, Highway 84 East Volunteer Fire Department, Palestine Fire Department, Engine 610 and CBS19–East Texas Heroes. For the kids there will be the Kiddie Express Train, two bounce houses and a bubble station. Food vendors are Shep’s Bar-B-Q of Palestine and Snow Coney Island of Bullard.
The day will begin with a flag raising ceremony at 9am. A veteran’s memorial ceremony will occur at 11am. There will also be a number of demonstrations occurring throughout the day. The day’s events will end with a retrieval of colors.
At 11am the Texas State Railroad will honor those who have served or are currently serving in the military with a FREE ride on the Piney Woods Steam Excursion! These rides are good for departures from both the Palestine and Rusk depots.
That evening The Patriot Train will depart at 7pm, following a reception in the portico at 6:30. The meal for this special, patriotic-themed dinner train will be catered by Contemporary Catering of Palestine.
Entrance to the event is free. Parking is $5 per vehicle.

All participants this year will get first option at booth space next year when the AVTT – American Veterans Travelling Tribute will be on display. AVTT’s Traveling Wall is the largest Wall replica traveling the USA.
The Traveling Wall, an 80 percent scale version of the Viet Nam Memorial Wall in Washington D.C. has 14 flags flying overhead, is 360-feet long, eight feet tall and contains every name etched on the original. The total “Cost of Freedom” exhibit also includes 190 feet of additional stand up displays honoring all veterans and those serving today.

SFA Gardens lecture series to feature Oklahoma Centennial Botanical Garden director
The SFA Gardens at Stephen F. Austin State University will host the monthly Theresa and Les Reeves Lecture Series at 7 p.m. Thursday, May 16, in the Agriculture Building, Room 110, at 1924 Wilson Drive.
Dr. Todd Lasseigne, president and CEO of the Oklahoma Centennial Botanical Garden in Tulsa, Okla., will present “The OCBG: Proving That There’s Plant Life Here.” Lasseigne has been with the OCBG since 2011. He previously served as executive director of the Paul J. Ciener Botanical Garden in Kernersville, N.C., and as instructor and assistant director at J.C. Raulston Arboretum at North Carolina State University in Raleigh, N.C. He is active in the American Public Gardens Association.
Lasseigne received his B.S. in horticulture from the University of Southwestern Louisiana, his M.S. in horticulture from the University of Georgia and his Ph.D. in horticultural science from North Carolina State University.
The Theresa and Les Reeves Garden Lecture Series is normally held the third Thursday of each month at the Arthur Temple College of Forestry and Agriculture’s SFA Mast Arboretum. A rare plant raffle will be held after the program. The lecture is free and open to the public, but donations to the Theresa and Les Reeves Garden Lecture Series endowed fund are always appreciated.

Obituary: Arthur Dale Miller
Arthur Dale Miller, 84, of Nacogdoches died Saturday, May 11, 2013, at Nacogdoches Memorial Hospital following a brief illness.
Mr. Miller was born November 2, 1928, in Kokomo, Indiana, to Noah Miller and Iva (Williams) Miller. He joined the Navy as a teenager during World War II. During his naval service, he participated in atomic bomb testing at Bikini Atoll.
Mr. Miller was in the automotive service business for many years, specializing in Ford Mustang parts and service. He enjoyed restoring Mustangs, dancing, and having fun with his many friends.
He is survived by a daughter, Kathleen D. Miller Suttles of Kokomo, Indiana; two sons, David G. Miller and Robert M. Miller of Utah; seven grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and special friend, Betty Bunch of Nacogdoches.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a half-brother, Kenneth Miller.
A funeral service will be held at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 15, 2013, at Cason Monk-Metcalf Sunset Chapel, located at 5400 North Street in Nacogdoches, with Rev. John Bingham officiating. Interment will follow at Fairview Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 1:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. prior to the service on Wednesday, May 15, 2013.
Special thanks goes to Dr. Pokala, Dr. Hashim, Dr. Binusha, and all other professionals who gave him excellent care during his last days.
Pallbearers are Mark Lymbery Sr., David Lymbery, Bob Pagano, Nick Randolph, Blaine Dodd, and Chris Griffin. Honorary pallbearer is Kathy Tatum.

Obituary: Gerald Carlton Bentley
Mr. Gerald Carlton Bentley, age 67, of Chireno, Texas, passed away suddenly Saturday, May 11, 2013, at his residence.
Mr. Bentley was born Sept. 19, 1945, in Chireno to parents John David Bentley and Effie Mae (Gibson) Bentley. He was a longtime resident of the Texas City area before returning to Chireno several years ago.
Gerald enjoyed hunting and fishing. He was one of the most avid Dallas Cowboys fan.
One of Gerald’s greatest pleasures was cooking barbecue for gatherings and events of his family and friends.
He is survived by his wife, of 49 years, Juanita Jane (Holland) Bentley, to whom he was married Oct. 8, 1963; daughters, Tonya Patterson and David of Cushing, Sheila Bentley and Kelley of Nacogdoches, and Dianna Alexander and Donald of Texas City; son, Robbie Packard and Billie of Chireno; sisters, Vester Smith of Porter, Inez Meador of Livingston, Rachel Packard of Texas City, and Effie Barnette of Cushing; eight grandchildren; and ten great-grandchildren.
Funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, May 14, 2013, at Cason Monk-Metcalf Sunset Chapel, located at 5400 North Street in Nacogdoches, with Bro. Allen Cheney officiating. Interment will be at the Upper Chireno Cemetery, located off FM 95 in Chireno.
Visitation will be held Monday, May 13, 2013, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Cason Monk-Metcalf.
Serving as pallbearers will be Joe Packard, Timothy Perren, Terry Perren, Travis Alexander, Donald Alexander, and Bradley Smith. Honorary pallbearers will be David Patterson, David Bain, Eddie Holland, John Polinard, and Stephen Burns.
