She had a thirst for knowledge that started as a child and continued until the last days of her life. She graduated from high school in Brookeland, Texas, at age 16, where she was a star basketball player (known by some as “the girl with the molasses-colored hair”).
After graduation, Joanne moved to Beaumont where she worked in a grocery store snack bar, then as a cashier, and later as a telephone operator for Southwestern Bell. She went to Chenier’s Business College taking business English, business math, typing, shorthand and business machines. In 1948, she moved to Shreveport, Louisiana, and went to work in the Southwestern Gas & Electric Company billing department.
She married Elton DuBose in Appaloosas, Louisiana, on October 10, 1949. The next year they moved to Houston, Texas, where Joanne worked selling telephone and newspaper ads, then at Meyer Bros. In 1959, Joanne and Elton moved to New Caney, Texas, where she purchased and operated the New Caney Food Market, the local grocery store. After the sale of the store, she took accounting, tax accounting, and business law classes at Massey Business College. In 1965, Joanne and family moved back to Houston, Texas, where she later earned her real estate agent, broker, and appraiser licenses. She worked in those capacities until 1978, when the DuBose family moved to Nacogdoches, Texas. In 1983, Joanne went to work at Merchants & Planters State Bank as cashier and COO. She worked there until her retirement in 1991.
Joanne dedicated her life to her children and family, and the betterment of herself and their lives. She was an inspiration to all who knew her. Obituary: Ryan Brown Davis

Services for Ryan Brown Davis, age 24, of Nacogdoches will be held at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, November 2, 2013, at First United Methodist Church in Nacogdoches, with Dr. Bill Gandin officiating. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Park. Ryan joined our Lord and Savior on Monday, October 28, 2013, in Nacogdoches. He was born August 30, 1989 in Nacogdoches, Texas to Skeeter and Carolyn Boudro Davis.

Ryan, a member of the National Honor Society, graduated from Nacogdoches High School in 2008 where he was actively involved in Key Club, soccer, track and cross-country. Church held a special place in Ryan’s heart and he loved Jud, the youth leader, and hanging out with the youth and keeping everyone entertained. His smile lit up the room, no matter where he went. Becoming a Sea Aggie was at the helm of Ryan’s nautical pursuits. At the time of his accident, Ryan was studying Marine Transportation with the goal of becoming a ship’s captain. He was an active member of the Texas Maritime Academy at Texas A&M Galveston. Ryan would have graduated this past August. Water was a huge part of Ryan’s life; he loved swimming in the Frio and skim boarding at the beach. Dancing at Garner State Park, or anywhere, was a preferred activity. Music played a significant part in Ryan’s life; he loved Jimmy Buffet, The Beatles, and Bob Marley and knew all the words to mom and dad’s oldies.

Team Ryan and the Aggie Nation played a significant role in the Davis family journey the last 34 months. May blessings be bountiful to the many who provided prayer and cards, love, care, food, therapy, and medical attention. From the prayer vigil and fund-raiser, to the community-wide churches offering prayers and prayer blankets, the family has been sustained. Financial help from the whole community helped to purchase medical equipment and the van for transporting Ryan. It is these gifts of love that made the difference.

Survivors include his parents, Skeeter and Carolyn, and brother Scott; aunt and uncle Margaret and Jay Hairston and cousins Dixie and Davis, all of League City, Texas; aunt and uncle Susan and Todd Oubre of Dayton, Texas and cousin Matthew, also of Dayton; uncle Doug Davis of Dayton, Texas and cousins Kelli Davis, of Humble, Texas and Ric Davis of Lake Charles, Louisiana. His paternal grandparents Doug and Patsy Davis, maternal grandparents Bruntze and Lorine Boudro, and uncle Linn Boudro, greeted Ryan in heaven. Ryan leaves behind many beloved family members and friends.

Pallbearers are Anthony Scott, Jud McLeod, Matt Wallace, Todd Mays, Wayne Goodwin, and Ty Marmon. Honorary Pallbearers are Armando Sanchez, Bernard Livingston, David Lucena, James Harkness, Jimmy Griffin, Lee Brewer, Tim Brewer, and Tommy McAninch.

The family wants to direct memorial gifts to Breast Cancer Awareness and First United Methodist Church.

Obituary: Joy Smith

Joy Smith passed in the loving arms of her Heavenly Father on Friday, October 25, 2013. She was the beloved daughter of Jessie and Nellie Johnson of Garrison, Texas, whom have preceded her in eternal rest.
After many years at Mize Department Store she retired. She was a member of First Assembly of God and very active in the church—she taught Sunday School and had a nursing home ministry. She loved serving the Lord.
Ms. Smith is survived by her loving sister, Marciel Baker; and her four children, Sharon Green, David Garcia, Carlos Garcia, and Sandy Tarpley. She was also blessed with fifteen grandkids and twenty-eight great-grandkids. Sharing in her passing is her beloved son, Butch Alexander; her brother, Buck Johnson; and her three sisters, Avis Alexander, Valerie McShan and Lorene Setliff.
Joy leaves behind a legacy of love that her children and their children can pass on. There is no coincidence that her name was Joy because she always had a smile, hug and encouraging word. Her whole life she witnessed every chance she could. There were no strangers only another lost soul she could witness to about our Lord.
She will be greatly missed but her memory will live on. She is finally at home in the arms of Jesus serenaded by angels and saying well done my precious daughter.
Joy’s service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, October 31, 2013, at Cason Monk-Metcalf Sunset Chapel, located at 5400 North St. in Nacogdoches. Interment will follow at Fairview Cemetery.
Visitation will be held from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Wednesday, October 30, 2013, at Cason Monk-Metcalf.

SFA’s Percussion Ensemble to perform recently composed works

Juwan Blanton, Lufkin music education major at SFA, will be a feature soloist during a performance of the SFA Percussion Ensemble at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 7, in Cole Concert Hall on the SFA campus.

The SFA Percussion Ensemble, under the direction of Dr. Brad Meyer, director of percussion studies at Stephen F. Austin State University, will present a concert of recently composed works for chamber ensembles at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 7, in Cole Concert Hall in the Wright Music Building.

Two world premieres will be presented at this concert: “Tri-Takt” and “Coniferous Contemplation.” “Tri-Takt,” created by Tasmanian composer Matt Chilmaid, is for three percussionists performing on similar instruments of differing pitches, and “Coniferous Contemplation,” composed by Meyer, is for two groups performing on bodhrans, which are Celtic frame drums played with either the hand or a wooden stick called a “tipper,” Meyer explained.

Senior Juwan Blanton, music education major from Lufkin, will be the featured soloist on James Campbell’s “Garage Drummer,” a composition inspired by the composer’s experience in and around rock band jam sessions.

Lastly, “Contrails,” written by Dr. Josh Smith, will end the concert.

“It’s a flashy, heart-pounding composition that evokes the sounds and noise of a jet engine, which eventually fades and surrounds the audience in a wash of shimmering triangles,” Meyer said.
