The first day of school for Nacogdoches ISD students is Monday, August 22th , and the Nacogdoches Police Department reminds motorists to use caution in and around school zones. Other schools, such as SFA Charter and Regent’s Academy are already in session.

“Traffic is traditionally congested for the first few days in school zones”, said NPD Lt. Dan Taravella. “Motorists are urged to use extreme caution in these areas”.

NPD reminds motorists that pedestrian traffic will increase in school zones and that speed limits are lower than usual in designated school zones.

Motorists are reminded that cell phone use in school zones is prohibited by state law, unless it is a call for emergency help.

The Nacogdoches Police Department’s Patrol and Traffic Divisions will be actively patrolling school zones, as well as monitoring school busses loading and unloading. Citations will be issued for violations.

Motorists are reminded that state law requires vehicles to stop when a school bus is displaying flashing red lights, either loading or unloading students. “A good rule is to never pass a stopped school bus unless you are directed to do so by the driver, and then only with extreme caution”, Taravella added.
