SFA history student earns national research award

Jake McAdams, a senior majoring in history at Stephen F. Austin State University, recently was awarded the Ben H. Procter Research Paper Award from the Phi Alpha Theta national history honor society.

The award recognized McAdams’ paper titled “The Devil’s Wire: The Texas Fence Cutter’s War of 1883” and was presented during the Southwestern Social Science Association’s annual conference in San Diego, Calif.

McAdams has conducted other independent research as an SFA undergraduate, including projects on the romanticization of the American mountain man and the history of Long Branch, Texas. He has collaborated on SFA’s Charlie Wilson Oral History Project, presented papers at professional conferences and published two articles in “Clio’s Eye,” SFA’s online historical magazine.

A native of Red Oak, McAdams will graduate with his Bachelor of Arts in history in May. He is concurrently working on a Master of Arts with an emphasis in public history at SFA and hopes to pursue a career in the field of historic preservation or cultural resources management.

McAdams is a past recipient of SFA’s Mary Devine Writing Award and Presidential Volunteer Service Award and has been included on both the President’s Honor Roll and Dean’s List. He is a member of the SFA chapter of Phi Alpha Theta.
