SFA music education professor to deliver lecture

Mark E. Turner, associate professor of elementary music education will deliver a lecture, “Why Can’t I Get Through to Them? A Discussion of Musical Meaning, Ideology and Education,” from 2 to 3 p.m. Friday, Sept. 2, in the Music Recital Hall (Room 160) of the Wright Music Building.

The lecture focuses on how current music education practices affirm or alienate students in public school music programs and highlights the work of Lucy Green, professor of music education at the Institute of Education, University of London.

The talk is the first of the monthly Robert G. Sidnell Lecture Series in Music Education established by Turner and named for a former dean of the SFA College of Fine Arts.

As Turner explained, “The series honors an individual whose research and writings in music education have influenced countless graduate students over the past 30 years.”

Turner said he formed the series as a way to provoke thought and dialog. “My hope is that the diversity of topics related to music and music education will encourage attendance from a wide spectrum of individuals across campus and from across the community.”

Admission is free. The Wright Music Building is located at 2210 Alumni Dr. For more information, please call Turner at (936) 468-4051.
