     The Nacogdoches County Sheriff’s Office executed a search warrant late this afternoon that netted the recovery of about 1.5 pounds of high grade marijuana, approximately 1/2 gallon of liquid codine, hundreds of Ecstacy tablets and Xanax bars, ten guns and almost $2000.00 cash.

     The recovery of this significant quantity of illegal drugs and weapons was the result of a lot of hard work and good investigative technique on the part of our deputies. Felony arrest warrants are being sought against a suspect in the case.

Obituary: Annie Kirk Murray

     Annie Kirk Murray was born May 5, 1923, in Polk, North Carolina, to Gilbert Erskine & Annie Rowan Kidd, mom was raised in Lexington, Va., by her mother following the early death of her father, a Presbyterian minister.

     Following graduation from Mary Washington College she met and married Jack Godfrey Murray who was attending Washington & Lee University following WWII service as a B-24 bombardier. Drafted again for the Korean conflict Jack decided to make the USAF a career and they traveled the world, serving time in Tripoli, California, Arkansas, Virginia, South Carolina, Pittsburgh and Germany and back to Virginia before finally retiring in Texas. Jack then entered the Episcopal Seminary and was rector of Christ Episcopal Church in Nacogdoches at the time of his death in 1982.

     Koonah continued to live in Nacogdoches for years, becoming a member of the Nacogdoches Club, serving on the vestry at her church and enjoying time with her many friends in Nacogdoches, including The Ladies of The Evening, a supper club with a passion for seeking out fine dining in the local area, a quest that kept them busy. She was an avid bridge player and loved to volunteer.

     As her health began to deteriorate she moved to Fort Worth to be closer to her grandchildren and spent her final months getting to know her first great granddaughter. She was a wonderful mother who will be missed by not only her family but also her many friends from East Texas. Her family wishes to express their thanks to the residents and staff at Town Village Ridgmar and Sterling House of Watauga for the care shown to mom, and a special thanks to Heart to Heart Hospice, especially Rylinda, Jeanette and Faye, for developing special bonds in an above and beyond manner the past 6 weeks. The journey would not have been complete without them.

     Koonah is survived by her sons, Jeff Murray and wife Janie of Fort Worth, Kirk Murray and wife Debbie of Loveland, Ohio, and Bobby Murray and wife Theresa of Bastrop; and her daughter, Ellen and husband Dr. Kent Macaulay of Round Rock. In addition she is also survived by her granddaughters, Laura Murray and fiance’ Roger Koscielniak of Ennis, Jacqueline Murray and Elizabeth Murray of Fort Worth, and Amanda Hoffman and husband Matt Hoffman of Roanoke, VA, and grandson Bryan Murray and wife Jamie of West Chester, Ohio, and John and Patrick Richardson of Bastrop. Her great-granddaughter, Avery Rowan Koscielniak, was born in July and brought mom much joy as only a great-grandchild can.

     Memorial services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 5, 2011, at Christ Episcopal Church in Nacogdoches.

Obituary: Walter Jerry Rollins

     Funeral services for Walter Jerry Rollins, 74, of Natchez who died Thursday February 3, 2011 at Promise Hospital in Vidalia will be at 2:00 P.M. Sunday February 6, 2011 at Laird Funeral Home Chapel with Bro. Thomas Foster officiating. Burial will follow in Greenlawn Memorial Park Cemetery under the direction of Laird Funeral Home. Visitation will be from 5:00 to 8:00 P.M. Saturday February 5, 2011 at Laird Funeral Home.

     Walter Jerry Rollins was born January 18, 1937 in Bude, Ms the son of Joseph David Rollins and Ollie Mae Freeman Rollins. He was an automobile mechanic, and was of the Baptist faith. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother; Luther Ray Rollins, and a sister; Rose Mae Bass.

     Survivors: Wife: Margie Rollins of Natchez, Ms One Daughter: Sue Ann Perry and husband Clayton of Sicily Island, La. Obituary: Maxine Wisener Lee

1922 – 2011

     Ms. Doris Maxine (Wisener) Lee, age 88, passed away Wednesday, Feb. 2, 2011, in Richardson, Texas.

     She was born April 8, 1922, in Etoile, Texas, to Fred Ramie Wisener and Nena Verline (King) Wisener. After graduation from high school, Maxine attended business school and worked several years for Allis-Chalmers Equipment Company. She then moved on to a business career as owner of Adler Hotel and Northway Florist in the Dallas area.

     Survivors: a sister, Alice Joy (Wisener) Clinch of Plano, Texas; brothers, Fred Darrell Wisener of Hot Springs Village, Arkansas, and Young King Wisener of Carrollton, Texas; and host of nieces and nephews.

     Maxine was preceded in death by her parents; and three brothers, Ted Ray Wisener, Bonnie Oliver Wisener, and Gerald Austin Wisener.

     Funeral services are set for 3:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 5, at Cason Monk-Metcalf Sunset Chapel at 5400 North Street, Nacogdoches, Texas, with Bro. R.W. “Bobby” King officiating. Interment will be at the King Family Cemetery in Douglass, Texas.

February 3: SFA Crime Log

Wednesday February 2, 2011 – Thursday February 3, 2011

     On 2-2-2011 an Officer was dispatched to University Woods in reference to Drug Complaint. Upon arrival the Officer located a subject in possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia. The subject was arrested and transported to the Nacogdoches County Jail without incident. There are two suspects.

     On 2-2-2011 an Officer was dispatched to the lobby of UPD in reference to Criminal Mischief. Upon arrival the Officer made contact with the complainant who advised on 1-30-2011 her vehicle was damaged in lot 23. The complainant also stated that on 2-1-2011 a known person used language that offended her in Steen Hall Lobby. There is one suspect.

NPD: WINTER STORM SAFETY TIPS

     (Nacogdoches, TX) As Nacogdoches city and county residents prepare for the possibility of a winter storm, Nacogdoches Emergency Management officials offer the following safety reminders:

• Monitor your radio, television and/or NOAA weather radio for weather reports and emergency information.
• Maintain ventilation when using portable generators. Never use a portable generator inside a structure.
• If using a portable generator to power a home, be sure the home is equipped with a safety cut off switch that prevents energizing power lines. If in doubt, DO NOT connect the generator to the structure’s wiring.
• Have a supply of non-perishable foods and bottle water on hand. A three day supply for each person is recommended.
• Never touch a downed power line, even if it appears “dead”.
• Do not drive unless absolutely necessary.
• Be careful walking on sidewalks.
• Watch for falling ice and tree limbs.
• Give outdoor pets shelter.
• Make sure all outside pipes are protected. Open interior cabinet doors under sinks to prevent freezing.

     Emergency officials will continue to monitor this situation as it develops.

SFA News: Relay For Life unites three generations in the fight against cancer (by Kayli Steger)

     Devoted teams are gearing up to raise cancer awareness at the Nacogdoches County Relay For Life on March 4 and 5, and Relay’s youngest team captain, nine-year-old Jack “Ty” Norman IV, has a personal reason for supporting the cause.

     Since last year’s event, Ty’s grandfather Jack was diagnosed with cancer, underwent treatment and has now been given a clean bill of health. This year’s event has taken on a special meaning for the Norman family, and now three generations are participating to fight back against the disease.

     Ty decided to become the captain of “Shake it Up,” a team consisting of his grandfather and supportive friends, and he will participate in his second Relay to fight back against a disease that now hits close to home.

     Jack Norman walked in the event last year on his daughter-in-law Lisa’s team to honor his late father who died of prostate cancer. After losing his father, Norman had regular cancer screenings at an early age. When doctors found cancerous cells during a 2010 visit, they were able to respond quickly to prevent the cancer from spreading.

     “Cancer is a scary word, and I had been getting screened for years because of my father,” Norman said. “The doctor found it early, and it saved my life.”

     Norman says he is an advocate of early screening and will pass knowledge of his family’s history of cancer along to future generations.

     When Norman heard that his grandson wanted to be the captain of his own Relay For Life team he said, “that sounds like him.”

     “He’s very conscientious and understands why he’s doing this,” Norman said. “He’s a fine young man and I’m very proud of him.”

     The SFA Charter School fourth grader says he wants to participate in Relay For Life to make a difference for people like his grandpa and for those still fighting the disease.

     “I like walking for people with cancer so that we can help find a cure for people like my grandpa,” Ty said. “I want them to know that there are people out there who know what you’re going through and are helping to find a cure.”

     Relay For Life will be held from 7 p.m. March 4 to 7 a.m. March 5 at the Nacogdoches County Expo Center. The American Cancer Society is seeking the participation of the SFA community to support Relay For Life of Nacogdoches County. Thomas Kerss (Nacogdoches Sheriff): Weather Advisory

     The Nacogdoches County Sheriff’s Office has received reports of roads and bridges icing over along the Eastern portion of the county reaching from just south of Garrison to Woden. At least one weather related motor vehicle accident has been reported in that area. Scattered accumulation of sleet and snow have been reported in other areas of the County. This storm reached our area several hours ahead of the predicted times and heavier accumulation is expected throughout the day.

     We ask drivers to please slow their speeds at this time, especially on the Eastern half of the County. TXDOT and County Road and Bridge crews are attempting to service roads, bridges and overpasses in those areas at this time.

     We will attempt to update you of significant information as the storm progresses.
