On the report of the Death Investigation, the body of Jeremy Mathis, age 26, of San Augustine was located on the bed. No obvious signs of criminal activity, Justice of the Peace ordered an autopsy. Judge will rule on cause of death upon completion of testing.
As part of its monthly independent film series, the Stephen F. Austin State University School of Art and SFA Friends of the Visual Arts will present a free screening of “A Man Named Pearl” at 7 p.m. Friday, April 1, at The Cole Art Center @ The Old Opera House, 329 E. Main St. in downtown Nacogdoches.
The 78-minute film tells the inspiring story of a self-taught topiary artist Pearl Fryar, who was not welcome in an all-white neighborhood because its residents believed “Black people don’t keep up their yards.” After moving into “black” neighborhood in Bishopville, S.C., Fryar set a goal to become the first African-American to win the town’s “Yard of the Month Award.”
Fryar met that goal and exceeded it. He and his garden have now been featured in dozens of magazines and newspapers as well as on national television programs. Each year, thousands of visitors from across the United States and around the world come to see Fryar’s three-and-a-half-acre property, bringing much-needed tourist dollars into Bishopville and Lee County, the poorest county in South Carolina.
“A Man Named Pearl” received the Crystal Heart and Audience Choice awards at the Heartland Film Festival and the Salem Film Festival Audience Award.
According to publicity materials, the film “offers an upbeat message that speaks to respect for both self and others, and shows what one person can achieve when he allows himself to share the full expression of his humanity.”

Lorna Denice Wisdom
Lorna “Denice” Wisdom, 55, passed away on Friday, March 25, 2011 at Nacogdoches Medical Center. She was born on March 30, 1955 in Richmond, Texas to Feris Jo and Barbara Joy Frazar.
She was raised in Richmond and later moved to the Martinsville Community to be near her family and enjoy the countryside. She became an administrative assistant at the SFA Physical Plant in 2000.
Employees thought of her as family. She wrote the newsletter for the department and in the course of her work, got to know more about each of them.
She had a great memory, which made her a great story teller. She loved living in the country, watching the world from her back porch and hand feeding the cows that she personally named. She was an antique collector and enjoyed traveling with friends and family in search of new finds. She was creative, enjoyed art, the ballet, and cross-stitching. She looked forward to her annual cross-stitch and quilting retreat with a group of loyal friends.
She was an active member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church in Nacogdoches where she served in many leadership roles. Family was the most important thing to her and she treated everyone the same. She will be deeply missed by all of those who knew her.
She is preceded in death by her grandparents; William and Yandell Frazar and William and Odessa Cox, and her nephew, Charles J. Frazar.
She is survived by her sons; Ryan Feris Wisdom and Eric William Wisdom and his wife Mandy, grandchildren; Jacob Wisdom, Taylor Knight and Andrew Wisdom, her parents, two sisters; Sheri Talbot and her husband James, Lori McKeown and her husband John, her brother; Duane Frazar, nieces; Jessica Lynn McKeown, Rebecca Talbot, Rachel Talbot, Lorna Elise Talbot, two nephews; Joshua Frazar and his wife Rebecca, Tyler Frazar, and a great-niece, Haylie Talbot.
Funeral services have been scheduled for Monday, March 28, 2011 at 5:30pm at Cason Monk-Metcalf Sunset Chapel, located at 5400 North Street, Nacogdoches, Texas, with Isaac Heath officiating. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Park. Friends are invited to a visitation on Sunday, March, 27, 2011 at Cason Monk-Metcalf Funeral Directors located at 5400 North Street, Nacogdoches, Texas, 75965. The Stephen F. Austin State University College of Fine Arts and School of Music will present Sarah Frisof in a guest flute recital at 6 p.m. Friday, April 1, in Cole Concert Hall on the SFA campus. The recital is free and open to the public.
Frisof, assistant professor of flute at the University of Texas at Arlington, will present a program of works by J.S. Bach, Pierre Sancan and Joseph Schwantner. Performing with Frisof will be pianist Daniel Pesca.
Sarah Frisof
Frisof received her doctorate from the University of Michigan and also studied at The Juilliard School and the Eastman School of Music. She was a semifinalist in the 2009 Kobe International Flute Competition and the second prizewinner of the National Flute Association’s Young Artist Competition and the Heida Hermanns International Woodwind Competition.
She has attended the Verbier, Tanglewood and Aspen Music Festivals and substituted with the New York Philharmonic, Detroit Symphony and Boston Symphony.
