Fresh Strawberries available this Saturday at the Farmer’s Market

     The SFASU Horticulture Club will be at the market this Saturday with 13 types of tomatoes, 8 types of basils, an assortment of herbs: rue, chives, mint, stevia, cilantro, parsley…and more, 2 types of kohlrabi, eggplant, oakra, 7-8 types of bell peppers and 5 types hot peppers. For annuals and perennials, we have: house plants, Texas tri-star, night blooming jasmine, Buddleia (purple), Madagascar Buddleia (yellow), cuphea, hanging baskets, and more.

     Things to look for: baked goods (breads, cakes, cookies & pies), candles, canned goods (wild-picked jams & jellies including may haw, blackberry, blueberry, muscatine and wild plum as well as jams, marmalades, preserves, chow-chow, pickled vegetables, salsas and relishes), ceramics, artisan Texas cheeses, free-range eggs, locally raised organic tilapia fish and tilapia fillets, flowers, herbs (basil, cilantro, coriander, dill, oregano, parsley, rosemary & thyme), local raw honey, jewelry, plants (starter plants, trees & whips), tamales and vinegars. LOCAL PRODUCE: frozen beans (butter, green, baby Lima & pinto), frozen blueberries, cabbage, frozen field corn, cucumbers, greens (collard & turnip), kohlrabi, lettuce, onions (green and yellow), frozen peas (black eye, zipper cream, brown Crowder & purple hull), banana peppers, sweet potatoes, new potatoes, radishes, tomatoes (green, Romas, red Celebrity slicers & red Jet Star slicers) and turnips.

     The Nacogdoches Farmers’ Market, located at the “hitch lot” at the corner of West Main and Pearl Streets, is open from 8 a.m. until noon or later every Saturday morning. The market is open on Saturday mornings. If the market parking lot is full, additional parking is available in the Nacogdoches County Courthouse Annex parking lot.

SFA faculty to perform in ‘Stone Fort Wind Quintet and Friends’ (April 12)

    The Stone Fort Wind Quintet, a faculty ensemble at Stephen F. Austin State University, will present its spring concert at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 12, in Cole Concert Hall on the SFA campus.

    The concert, titled “Stone Fort Wind Quintet and Friends,” will feature the regular ensemble members–Christina Guenther (flute), John W. Goodall (oboe), Christopher Ayer (clarinet), Susan Nelson (bassoon) and Charles Gavin (horn)–as well three other SFA music faculty: Fred J. Allen (bass clarinet), Nathan Nabb (saxophone) and Gary Wurtz (trumpet).

    “The Stone Fort Quintet is thrilled to be performing with three of our colleagues on this collaborative chamber music concert,” said Guenther.

    Wurtz and Allen will join the quintet for the concert’s opening piece, Paul Hindemith’s “Septett für Blasinstrumente.” The quintet and Nabb will then perform Pierre Max Dubois’ “Sinfonia de Camera pour Sextuor a vent.”

    “We will close the concert with the very fun Latin-based ‘Suite Cantabile’ for woodwind quintet by Bill Douglas,” said Guenther.

    The concert is a joint presentation of the SFA College of Fine Arts and School of Music and is a part of the Cole Performing Arts Series. Cole Concert Hall is located in the Wright Music Building, 2210 Alumni Dr.

SFA music students swept competition

Stephen F. Austin State University music composition students swept the undergraduate competition at the recent conference for the Texas Chapter of the National Association of Composers/USA held in San Marcos. Killeen senior Tyler Hughes (far right) won the prize for best undergraduate composition, and Garland senior Russell Cannon (second from left) received the honorable mention. Pictured also are conference host Nico Schuler and Daniel Adams, Texas Chapter board member. This is the fourth consecutive year that SFA has won the top undergraduate honor at this event. Cannon won it in 2010; and Aden Kent Ramsey, current SFA graduate student from Lufkin, won it in 2008 and 2009. A total of 10 SFA composition students attended the conference where their original compositions were performed as part of the competition. The students study under SFA Professor of Composition Stephen Lias.

Obituary: Arthur C. Faulkner

     A Funeral Service for Arthur Faulkner, 91, will be Saturday, April 9, 2011, at 2:00 PM at Cason Monk-Metcalf Sunset Chapel. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Park.

     Arthur passed away on Thursday, April 7, 2011, in Nacogdoches. He was born January, 31, 1920, in Nacogdoches.

     Visitation will be from 12:00pm – 2:00pm prior to the service on Saturday, April 9, 2011.

Obituary: Robert Glenn Davis

     Funeral service for Col. Robert Glenn Davis (Ret.), 79, of Chireno, Texas will be held on Saturday, April 9, 2011, at 11:00 am at Chireno Baptist Church with Bro. Waylon Brown officiating. Burial will follow at Chireno Lower Cemetery.

     Mr. Davis was born on May 12, 1931, in Chireno, Texas. He passed away after a brief illness on Wednesday, April 6, 2011, in Dallas, Texas.

     Visitation with the family will be held on Friday, April 8, 2011, from 6-8 pm at Laird Funeral Home.

14 LUFKIN AND NACOGDOCHES RESIDENTS ARRESTED IN DRUG CONSPIRACY

The following is the information provided by the US Attorney General’s Office.

     U.S. Attorney John M. Bales announced today that 14 individuals have been arrested following a year-long investigation into drug trafficking in the Lufkin and Nacogdoches area.

     A 12-count sealed indictment was returned by a federal grand jury on Mar. 17, 2011, charging 11 individuals with conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute cocaine and possession with the intent to distribute cocaine. Three of the individuals are also charged with possession of a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime. A separate sealed indictment in another unrelated case was also filed on Mar. 17, 2011, charging Teodocio Carrera, also known as Maclovio Ocon, along with two other individuals, with conspiracy with intent to distribute methamphetamine and distribution of methamphetamine.

     The indictment seeks the forfeiture of $1 million cash in drug proceeds. The indictment also seeks forfeiture of 6 pieces of real estate property in Lufkin and Nacogdoches and multiple vehicles that were utilized in the drug trafficking crimes.

     This case is being investigated by the FBI, the ATF, Texas Department of Public Safety – Criminal Investigations Division, the Nacogdoches Police Department, the Lufkin Police Department, assisted by the Angelina County Sheriff’s Department, the Nacogdoches County Sheriff’s Office, Center Police Department, Nacogdoches County Constable Precinct 4, the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office, the Internal Revenue Service, Bureau of Immigrations and Customs Enforcement (ICE), and the U.S. Marshals Service. The case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Lisa Flournoy.

     A grand jury indictment is not evidence of guilt. All defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
