A Funeral Service for Mary Jack Jenkins, 94, will be Thursday, May 5, 2011, at 2:00 pm at Cason Monk-Metcalf Sunset Chapel. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Park.
Mary died on Tuesday, May 3, 2011, in Rock Haven Nursing Center. She was born February 22, 1917 in Cushing, Texas.
Visitation will be from 1:00 pm until service time Thursday, May 5, 2011.

Mrs. Martin died on Tuesday, May 3, 2011, in Nacogdoches. She was born on January 30, 1927, in Cushing. Visitation will be on Thursday, May 5, 2011, from 5-7 pm at Laird Funeral Home.

Lori Crawford will be selling frozen pinto beans, Beets (2 TYPES), broccoli, cabbage, carrots, cauliflower, free range eggs (some double yolk), greens (collard, mustard & spinach), kohlrabi, lettuce, onions, fresh English peas, frozen purple hull peas, new potatoes, rutabage, radishes (regular & watermelon), large purple top turnips and strawberries from the Crawford farm in Timpson.
“There is tons of fresh produce available in Nacogdoches County this time of year. We are thrilled our vendors are ready to be able to serve the market’s customers twice a week,” said Main Street Manager Sarah O’Brien.
Things to look for this Wednesday include: Fresh Strawberries, Vine Ripened Tomatoes, Farm raised Tilapia, English peas, Mustard and Turnip greens, Lettuce, New Potatoes and Beets.
The Nacogdoches Farmers’ Market, located at the “hitch lot” at the corner of West Main and Pearl Streets, is open from 8 a.m. until noon or later every Saturday morning and Wednesday afternoons from 4 to 7 p.m.. If the market parking lot is full, additional parking is available in the Nacogdoches County Courthouse Annex parking lot.

On 05/02/11 an officer on patrol noticed an electronic sign had been damaged at the Student Center Parking Garage Parking Garage. There are no suspects.
On 05/02/2011 an officer was dispatched to the lobby of the University Police Department in reference to harassment that had occurred at Griffith Hall between 05/01/2011 to 05/02/2011. Upon arrival the officer made contact with the complainant who stated that a known subject has been repeatedly calling and texting her. There is one suspect.

The Nacogdoches County Constable Office conducted a traffic stop early Saturday morning that has lead to the arrest of two subjects and the seizure of various narcotics.
Constable Bridges stated that Deputy Allen was on patrol on Highway 59s in precinct 4 when he conducted a traffic stop on a black kia passenger car for a seatbelt violation.

The vehicle was occupied by two males that were traveling to Benton, La. When conducting the traffic stop Deputy Allen noticed that both subjects appeared to be very nervous and gave conflicting statements about there trip. Deputy Allen also could smell the odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle. Deputy Allen and his drug dog, K-9 Miko conducted a search of the motor vehicle.
The Search lead to the discovery of over five lbs of marijuana, two ounces of cocaine, 163 grams of hydrocodone , and 5 grams of ecstasy pills that was concealed inside of the vehicle.

Travis Anderson, 32 years of age and Trevoures Mcgee, 30 years of age both from Benton, La were arrested and charged with multiple counts of possession of controlled substance and possession of marijuana. Both subjects were booked into the Nacogdoches County Jail.

Four alumni vocalists will join the combined choirs and orchestra of Stephen F. Austin State University to present Ludwig van Beethoven’s “Missa Solemnis” at 7:30 p.m. Friday, May 6, in W.M. Turner Auditorium.
“We are looking forward to performing this monumental work, one of the finest products of Beethoven’s inspiration and artistic creativity,” said Dr. Tim King, director of SFA choral activities. “In a letter to the publisher, Beethoven declared that the ‘Missa Solemnnis’ could be considered ‘the greatest work which I have composed thus far.’”
Although Beethoven intended the “Solemn Mass” to be performed during the 1820 installation of his friend and student Archduke Rudolph as the Archbishop of Olmutz, he did not complete the work until 1823, and it was first performed in its entirety in 1824.
For SFA’s performance, the choir will consist of the 116 students enrolled in SFA’s A Cappella Choir, Choral Union and Women’s Choir. Orchestral music will be provided by SFA’s 51-member Orchestra of the Pines.
Charlotte Davis
Solos will be sung by four SFA alumni—soprano Charlotte Davis, mezzo-soprano Erin Roth, tenor Richard Novak and bass-baritone Terry Morris.
Davis, who received her Master of Arts in vocal performance from SFA and is a Nacogdoches resident, regularly performs in the East Texas area. She has taught voice at Angelina College since 1991 and serves as choir director, soloist and fill-in pianist at the Memorial Presbyterian Church in San Augustine.
While studying at SFA, Davis won first place in the Texoma Regional audition of the National Association of Teachers of Singing. Her stage experience includes roles in productions of “Oklahoma!,” “The Tales of Hoffmann,” “A Little Night Music,” “Susannah,” “Albert Herring” and “The Impresario.”
Erin Roth
Roth, a Lufkin native, earned both her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in vocal performance from SFA. Since then, her career as a lyric mezzo-soprano has advanced with performances at Des Moines Metro Opera, Texarkana Symphony Orchestra and the Gilbert and Sullivan Society of Northwest Louisiana.
She was a grant recipient in the Wednesday Morning Music Club’s Fielder Grant competition and a finalist in both the Edward Baird Singer of the Year Competition and the Shreveport Opera Singer of the Year.
Richard Novak
Novak, who earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in vocal performance from SFA and his doctorate from the University of North Texas, is establishing a national reputation as a professional tenor. He has performed with the Washington Concert Opera, Opera Carolina, Annapolis Opera, The Living Opera, San Antonio Symphony, Chautauqua Symphony, Prince William Symphony and the Monroe Symphony.
He was recently admitted into the Evelyn Lear and Thomas Stewart Emerging Singers Program. Previously, he trained with the apprentice/resident artist programs at Chautauqua Opera, Des Moines Metro Opera, Wichita Grand Opera and the Wesley Balk Singing/Acting Institute. In 2005 and 2006, Novak won the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions (Tulsa District).
Terry Morris
Morris, who is the director of music and fine arts at First Methodist Church in Houston, completed his bachelor’s and master’s degrees at SFA. He then earned his Doctor of Musical Arts from Michigan State University, where he won the Michigan State Concerto Competition and the Friedrich Schoor International Vocal Competition.
Morris is in constant demand as an arranger, of choral and orchestral works, cholral clinician, lecturer, adjudicator, voice teacher and professional singer. He has performed more than 40 roles in opera and musical theater and his solo symphonic performances span another 40 works. Recently, he sang the baritone solo in Kirk Mechem’s “Dan-u-el” with the Texas All-State Mixed Choir.
“Missa Solemnis” is a joint presentation of the SFA College of Fine Arts and School of Music and is sponsored in part by BancorpSouth.
