May 13: SFA Crime Log
On 5-12-2011 an Officer was dispatched Steen Hall in reference to Theft. Upon arrival the Officer made contact with the complainant, who advised on 5-12-2011 his unattended laundry was stolen at Steen Hall. There are no suspects.

Nacogdoches Main Street to host hospitality training for area businesses (May 24)
Helping make downtown Nacogdoches a “Texas Friendly” downtown will be the goal of an upcoming workshop hosted by the Main Street Program.
Sarah O’Brien, Main Street manager for the City of Nacogdoches, will lead the workshop. Participants will learn about Nacogdoches’ opportunities for tourism development, as well as the basics of customer service.
The workshop will be held on Tuesday, May 24th, from 4 to 5 p.m. at the Nacogdoches Recreation Center, 1112 North Street. The workshops are open to anyone interested in sharpening his or her customer service skills.
“In today’s hurry-up society, we sometimes forget how to slow down and treat the customer or visitor with respect and friendliness,” said O’Brien. “It is so imperative for front line customer services workers to treat our visitors with a ‘Texas Friendly’ attitude, often those casual experiences are the impressions that visitors take home with them.”
The program uses curriculum developed by the Texas Agricultural Extension Service. The Texas Friendly program encourages business owners as well as employees to promote hospitality habits when dealing with local customers and visitors.
According to Texas Economic Development, the state agency for economic development, tourism is a $40 billion industry in Texas each year. In Nacogdoches County travel spending accounts for approximately 85.1 million dollars.
“Nacogdoches and downtown have so much to offer visitors,” said O’Brien. “Visitors to Nacogdoches have it all – from unique shopping destinations, history galore, to unparalleled nature tourism- like the Ruby M. Mize azalea garden, Texas’ largest in fact. I don’t think most of our residents realize how big of an impact tourism has on our local economy.”
“We are confident these workshop’s will benefit not only the individual attendees but also Nacogdoches residents and the many visitors we welcome downtown to the oldest town in Texas each and every year,” O’Brien said.
Class size is limited, and advanced registration is required. To register for the Texas Friendly Hospitality Workshop, call the Main Street Office at 936-559-2573. The cost is free for all downtown business and City of Nacogdoches employees and $15 for any other interested participants. Participants will be given a certificate of completion.

NPD will participate in Selective Traffic Enforcement Program starting next week
The Nacogdoches Police Department will soon be participating in an enforcement wave of the Selective Traffic Enforcement Program (STEP). The Police Department participates in STEP several times each year in conjunction with TxDOT and other law enforcement agencies.
The upcoming enforcement wave is for the Memorial Day holiday and officers will be highly visible from May 18 thru June 1. Officers will be targeting seatbelt usage, speed, child safety seat usage and other moving violations.
“The ultimate purpose of these programs is to make the roads safer,” Nacogdoches Police Lt. Dan Taravella said. “That’s the bottom line. If we can slow folks down, encourage everyone to buckle up and get children in car seats, then we all stand a better chance in the event of an accident.”
STEP is conducted primarily during high traffic holiday times. The Nacogdoches Police Department will also be participating in another traffic safety event, Click it or Ticket (CIOT) during the same time frame, which specifically focuses on seat belt usage. NPD Traffic Officers will also be working with Union Pacific Railroad authorities on the railroad crossing safety enforcement program.
“All of these various programs are aimed at simply raising awareness, enforcing violations and hoping that word of mouth will help spread the message. We can make our roads and streets safer,” Taravella said.

SFA Gardens lecture to feature North Carolina horticulturist (May 19)
The SFA Gardens at Stephen F. Austin State University will host its monthly Theresa and Les Reeves Lecture Series at 7 p.m. Thursday, May 19, in the Agriculture Building, Room 110, at 1924 Wilson Dr. Horticulturist Mark Weathington will present “Thoughts on Bringing Color, Form, Texture and Excitement into the Southern Landscape.”

Weathington is assistant director and curator of collections at the JC Raulston Arboretum at North Carolina State University. He earned undergraduate degrees in horticulture and sociology and a master’s degree in horticulture from Virginia Tech. He has served as director of horticulture for the Norfolk Botanical Garden and as horticulturist at both the Virginia Aquarium and Marine Science Center, and the Atlanta Botanic Garden.
A writer and speaker on a variety of topics in horticulture, Weathington has recently revised and updated the “Propagation Guide for Woody Plants.” He has been published in Horticulture, Carolina Gardener, American Nurseryman, and Virginia Gardener magazines, as well as the Mid-Atlantic Gardeners’ Book of Lists. In addition, he writes two weekly columns for the Virginian-Pilot newspaper and features for several regional newspapers.
The Theresa and Les Reeves Garden Lecture Series is generally held the third Thursday of each month at the SFA Mast Arboretum. Refreshments are served by the SFA Gardens volunteers before the lecture, and a rare plant raffle is held afterward. The lecture is free and open to the public.
The SFA Gardens Volunteers welcome anyone to attend their meeting at 6:15 p.m. in room 118 of the Ag Building prior to the lecture.
At the meeting, volunteers exchange gardening ideas and tips and discuss volunteer opportunities at SFA Gardens, including hands-on gardening, propagation, irrigation, children’s educational activities, plant sale participation and azalea trail activities.

Obituary: Angel Gutierrez
A graveside service for infant child, Angel Gutierrez, will be held on Friday, May 13, 2011, at Sunset Memorial Park at 3:00 pm with Deacon Rafael Landeros officiating.
Angel was born and died on Tuesday, May 10, 2011, in Nacogdoches.
There will be no visitation.
