Stock up for your Memorial Day goodies this weekend at the Farmer’s Market (May 28)

     The Nacogdoches Farmer’s Market is the perfect place to make a dent in your Memorial Day shopping list! Tons of fresh produce for the grill such as zucchini, squash, and corn; Cucumbers, tomatoes, and greens for your salads; and don’t forget fresh peaches for everyone to snack on!

     Things to look for: baked goods (breads, cakes, cookies & pies), organic beef, candles, canned goods (wild-picked jams & jellies including may haw, blackberry, blueberry, muscatine and wild plum as well as jams, marmalades, preserves, chow-chow, pickled vegetables, salsas and relishes), ceramics, artisan Texas cheeses, free-range eggs, locally raised organic tilapia fish and tilapia fillets, flowers, fudge, herbs (basil, coriander, dill, oregano, rosemary & thyme), dried herbs, local raw honey, jewelry, loofah sponges, plants (house plants, starter plants, trees & whips), lye ftlinesoap, tamales and vinegars. LOCAL PRODUCE: green beans, frozen beans (butter, green, baby Lima & pinto), beets (2 types), Bok choi, broccoli, carrots, frozen corn (field & sweet), cucumbers, greens (collard, kale, orugula, mustard, spinach, Swiss chard & turnip), kohlrabi, lettuce (buttercrunch, red leaf & Romaine), onions (green, red, white and yellow), frozen peaches, frozen peas (black eye, zipper cream, brown Crowder, English & purple hull), peppers (banana, sweet Bell, hot Bell, & jalapeno), PEACHES, new potatoes, rutabage, squash (patti pan, yellow & zucchini), tomatoes (green, Romas, red Celebrity slicers & red Jet Star slicers) and large purple top turnips.

     The Nacogdoches Farmers’ Market, located at the “hitch lot” at the corner of West Main and Pearl Streets, is open from 8 a.m. until noon or later every Saturday morning and on Wednesday afternoons from 3 to 6 p.m. If the market parking lot is full, additional parking is available in the Nacogdoches County Courthouse Annex parking lot.

     Please note that the Farmer’s Market is a “Smoke Free” facility for the health of our customers and vendors.

Obituary: Joel Edward (Ed) Morgan Sr

Joel Edward (Ed) Morgan Sr

     Graveside services for Joel Edward (Ed) Morgan Sr., 80, of Nacogdoches will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, May 28, 2011, at Sunset Memorial Park, located at 5127 North Street in Nacogdoches.

     Mr. Morgan died Wednesday, May 25, at Nacogdoches Memorial Hospital. He was born in Houston, Texas, to Charles and Callie Stevenson Morgan on October 2, 1930.

     Mr. Morgan was a lifetime resident of Nacogdoches and a graduate of Nacogdoches High School and Stephen F. Austin State University. He served in the air force during the Korean War from 1950 until 1954. Mr. Morgan was the CEO and President of Morgan Oil Company for 56 years.

     He was preceded in death by his daughter, Ellen Morgan, his parents Charles and Callie Morgan, his brother, Dr. Charles Morgan, and nephew, Charles Morgan III.

     Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Dorothy Shelton Morgan, their children, Callie Morgan Bricker and husband, Randy; Claire Morgan Jordan and husband, Doug; Julie Morgan Taylor and husband Rick, and Ed Morgan, Jr. and wife Kristen. 10 grandchildren: Jennifer Jordan, Morgan Jordan, Ellen Jordan, Robert Jordan and wife Emily, Caroline Jordan, Shelton Taylor, Grayson Taylor, Ian Morgan, Sam Morgan, and Jed Morgan; 3 great grandchildren; Extended family members include Ab and Hazel Abernethy and their children, Luanna, Robert, Deedy, Maggie, and Ben. Nephews Steve Morgan and Wesley Morgan. Also, his lifelong family friend Clara Jean Flemons, and his beloved co-workers at Morgan Oil Company.

     Ed loved the outdoors and was an avid hunter and fisherman. Throughout his life, he continued to be proud of his athletic accomplishments and his nickname, “Rabbit.” Ed’s life revolved around his family; he was a devoted son, husband, father, and friend. Ed was loved and will be missed by many. He loved life and lived every day to its fullest.

     Pallbearers are Morgan Jordan, Robert Jordan, Ian Morgan, Grayson Taylor, Sam Morgan, Jed Morgan and Travis Clark.

     In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the American Heart Association.

     Arrangements are under the direction of Cason Monk-Metcalf Funeral Directors, located at 5400 North Street in Nacogdoches.
