Obituary: Peggy Byrn Green
Peggy Byrn Green, 95, of Timpson, Texas, passed away on Saturday, June 11, 2011, at her home in Timpson.
Born December 21, 1915, to Benn Aline Bussey Byrn and William M. “Mike” Byrn, she grew up in Timpson, graduating from Timpson High School. She attended Mary Hardin-Baylor and Baylor University, where she met John Willard Green. Upon graduation, in 1935, she returned to Timpson to teach English at Timpson High School. She married John Green on December 18, 1936, and began the first of many relocations during his long career with Texaco. Upon his retirement in 1971 as Executive Vice-President of World-wide Sales for Texaco, they returned to Timpson, renovated Peggy’s grandparents’ Victorian home and enjoyed traveling and supporting local charities, especially the Timpson EMS and Volunteer Fire services, for which she was honored by the State of Texas in 2005. John predeceased Peggy in 1987. Peggy was a member of the Daughters of the Amercian Revolution and the United Daughters of the Confederacy.
Peggy is survived by her daughter, Joan Green Jeffrey, of Liberty, Texas; her son, Mike Byrn Green of Alamosa, Colorado; her granddaughter, Julia Jeffrey Rathgeber and husband, Ross, of Austin, Texas; and two great-granddaughters whom she adored, Byrn Anne Rathgeber and Georgia Ann Jeffrey.
The family wishes to offer special thanks to the staff of Nurses Unlimited, especially Kimberly, Mary, Marla, Cathy, Angela, Mitchell, Peggy, and Cynthia; the staff of Nacogdoches Memorial Hospital and Dr. Richard Baker; Hospice of East Texas; Cindy Tate; Enrique Canada; and Timpson EMS.
For anyone wishing to join in her spirit of giving, donations may be made in her memory to the Timpson Volunteer Ambulance Service, P.O. Box 492, or the Timpson Volunteer Fire Department, P.O. Box 960, Timpson, Texas 75975.
A graveside service will be held Tuesday, June 14, 2011, at 10 am at Woodlawn Cemetery in Timpson, Texas, Dr. Josh Walters officiating.

SFA Gardens Lecture Series to feature Oklahoma horticulturist (June 16)
The SFA Gardens at Stephen F. Austin State University will host the monthly Theresa and Les Reeves Lecture Series at 7 p.m. Thursday, June 16, in the Agriculture Building, Room 110, at 1924 Wilson Dr. Oklahoma State University horticulturist and author Steve Dobbs will present “Architectural Plants: Space-Saving Plants in Urban Landscapes for Texture and Diversity.”
Dobbs joined Oklahoma State University as the grounds and landscape manager in May 2010 and is responsible for the maintenance and design of approximately 700 acres. He is the author of “The Southern Lawn Series” and “Oklahoma Gardeners Guide.” From 1990 until 1995, he was host and producer of “Oklahoma Gardening,” which was selected as the best gardening television program in the nation in 1992 by the Garden Writers Association of America. He is past president of the Garden Writers Association, which has more than 1,900 members throughout the U.S., Canada and England.
Dobbs received a bachelor’s degree in horticulture from Oklahoma State University and a master’s degree in horticulture from the University of Arkansas.
The Theresa and Les Reeves Garden Lecture Series is generally held the third Thursday of each month at the Temple College of Forestry and Agriculture’s SFA Mast Arboretum. Refreshments are served by the SFA Gardens volunteers before the lecture with a rare plant raffle being held afterward.
The SFA Gardens Volunteers will meet at 6:15 p.m. in the Agriculture Building, Room 118, prior to the lecture. At the meeting, volunteers exchange gardening ideas and tips and discuss volunteer opportunities at SFA Gardens, including hands-on gardening, propagation, irrigation, children’s educational activities, plant-sale participation and azalea trail activities. Both the meeting and lecture are free and open to the public.

Memorial Day STEP
The Nacogdoches Police Department recently completed a lengthy traffic enforcement period, involving several traffic related enforcements. Over the course of the last three weeks, NPD participated in STEP (Selective Traffic Enforcement Program), CIOT (Click It or Ticket), CARE (Crossing Accident Reduction Enforcement) with the Union Pacific Railroad and a DWI No Refusal Memorial Day weekend enforcement.
“We often participate in these traffic safety efforts throughout the year,” said Lt. Dan Taravella, program director, “but rarely all at the same time. We saturated the city with officers over the last three weeks in an effort to slow folks down and encourage seatbelt usage.”
NPD has participated in STEP and CIOT for the last 13 years and CARE for the last six years. Overtime for officer’s STEP enforcement is funded through state and federal funds.
Between STEP and CIOT, officers issued 91 citations for No Seatbelt, 13 citations for Unrestrained Child and 177 citations for Speeding.
“The state and local seatbelt usage rate is around 90% among motorists,” Taravella said. “We are grateful it is so high, but are trying to reach the 1 in 10 drivers who are still not buckling up.”
Officers also issued 25 citations for Disregarding Railroad Crossing Signals during an enforcement event two weeks ago, according to Taravella.
And during the most recent event, officers obtained search warrants on two suspected DWI drivers who refused to provide a blood or breath specimen.
The next STEP enforcement event will be in August and September for the Labor Day holidays.
