Obituary: Ima W. Dickey
Funeral Service for Ima Lee Windham Dickey, 89, of Nacogdoches, Texas will be held on Tuesday, June 21, 2011 at 10:00 a.m. at Laird Funeral Home with Pastor Crispin Bradsher and Brother Bob Little officiating. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Park in Nacogdoches.
Ima W. Dickey
Mrs. Dickey was born on March 12, 1922 in Nacogdoches, Texas. She was a graduate of Stephen F. Austin Teacher’s University and worked as a secretary at Memorial Hospital for many years. Ima was a member of the Oak Grove Baptist Church in Nacogdoches, Texas. She married Walter Lee Dickey, Jr. in Shreveport, LA on May 7, 1944. Walter and Ima enjoyed taking road trips and galavanted to many destinations across the United States. Ima was fantastic at crocheting and sewing. She crocheted afghans and various items for friends and family, and made school clothes for her daughter. She also loved working in her flower beds and was known for having quite a green thumb. Ima was a popular lady, and was well-liked by all her neighbors, fellow residents and staff members at Oak Manor Nursing Home. She was always quick to lend a helping hand to anyone in need. Ima was a wonderful mother and truly a good soul that will be greatly missed.
Ima is survived by a daughter, Rebecca Dickey Littleton, of Nacogdoches, TX; a grandson, John P. Dickey and wife Amp, of Bangkok, Thailand; a sister, Nonie Castleberry, of Conroe, TX; and special friend, William Lee Thompson, of Nacogdoches, TX, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Walter Lee Dickey, Jr.; her parents, B and Vernona Burrows Windham; and a grandson; Christopher Lee Bishop.
Pallbearers will be Scott Moses, Charles Shaver, Dennis Harper, Robert Castleberry, Charles Faulkner, and David Faulkner. Honoary Pallbearers will be the Elders and Deacons of Oak Grove Baptist Church.
Visitation will be held on Monday, June 20, 2011 from 5 – 7PM at Laird Funeral Home.
Family requests that donations be made to Oak Grove Baptist Church.

Obituary: Cherylee Anne Silva
A Memorial Mass for Mrs. Cherylee Ann Fernandes “Cheri” Silva, 61, of Nacogdoches, Texas will be held on Saturday, June 18, 2011, at 9:30 am at Sacred Heart Catholic Church with The Reverend Monsignor James E. Young officiating.
Mrs. Silva was born on January 1, 1950, in Turlock, California to Carl and Josephine E. Lucas Fernandes. She passed away on Tuesday, June 14, 2011, in Nacogdoches, Texas.
Cheri was raised in Turlock, California. She graduated from Turlock High School in 1967. She married her husband, Donald E. Silva on January 14, 1967, and they had 44 wonderful years together. Cheri was a member of the Pineywoods Country Club and Sacred Heart Catholic Church. She loved gardening, playing cards, dancing, bbq’s and was an avid golf player. She loved hosting parties, loved her community and best of all loved nurturing and loving all of her family and friends, including those in California. She enjoyed being involved with the Nacogdoches community, volunteering for mulitiple golf tournaments including the Blueberry Festival. Cheri’s family knew her as an extrovert who knew how to have a good time. She was supportive to all who needed her, was a compassionate caregiver, was patient and loving and had a big heart. She was bigger than life and all who knew and loved her, especially her family will forever miss her.
Cheri is survived by the love of her life, Donald Silva of Nacogdoches; a daughter, Dona Silva of Orlando, Florida; a brother, Charles Fernandes and wife, Candice of Ceres, California; her mother, Josephine Fernandes of Turlock, California; as well as a host of other extended family and great friends.
She was preceded in death by her father, Carl Fernandes and by infant sons, Craig and Jeffrey Silva.
Visitation will be on Friday, June 17, 2011, from 5-7 pm with Rosary at 7 pm at Laird Funeral Home.

Nacogdoches selected as editor’s choice in Best of the Road Competition
The City of Nacogdoches Main Street program and the Nacogdoches Convention & Visitors Bureau are thrilled to announce their recent nomination in the USA Today and Rand McNally Best of the Road Competition.

Over 20,000 Americans from coast to coast weighed in to name their favorite town as the Most Beautiful, Most Patriotic, Friendliest, Most Fun or Best for Food. The top towns in five categories have been narrowed down from more than 600 submissions and will be reviewed personally by the Best of the Road Rally teams via blog posts, video and photos. Leading off in New York City on June 23, five rally teams will be assigned one category to review key towns and verify which truly deserves to win the title of Best of the Road in its category. The top 30 finalist towns were determined by a combination of public appeal and analysis of reviews and photos by the judges. Teams participating in the Best of the Road Rally will visit four finalist towns in an assigned category as well as two additional towns determined by the competition’s judges. Nacogdoches was selected by the judges in the “Friendliest” category. Best of the Road judges will announce the winning towns at the Destination Marketing Association International (DMAI) Annual Convention on July 22. The top towns will be highlighted onwww.bestoftheroad.com and in the 2013 Rand McNally Road Atlas, as well as on USA TODAY’s Travel site.

“We are so honored to have been selected by the judges in this category,” said Main Street Manager Sarah O’Brien. The Nacogdoches CVB and the City of Nacogdoches Main Street Program are currently making plans to roll out the red carpet for the team upon their arrival. “We are planning a celebration and have lined up several sponsors already. Many thanks to R & K Distributors, Auntie Pasta’s and Hotel Fredonia for agreeing to help us out. Once we have final confirmation of the team’s travel plans we will be inviting the entire community downtown to help us celebrate,” said O’Brien. As always businesses, residents are encouraged to put on their usual “friendly” faces from June 23rd to July 14th to everyone they encounter. “We know we are one of the friendliest towns around, this is the perfect opportunity for Nacogdochians to show the rest of the country what we already know.”
The Nacogdoches Main Street Program currently offers free Texas Friendly Hospitality training to all downtown business. 300 + City employees have also been trained in the Texas Agri Life customer service training program. ‘Schoolhouse Rock Live!’ opens SFA summer theatre season (June 24 – July 7)
The fun, educational songs such as “Conjunction Junction” and “Just a Bill” from the Saturday morning cartoon programming of the 1970s, ’80s and ’90s are coming to W.M. Turner Auditorium as the Stephen F. Austin State University School of Theatre presents “Schoolhouse Rock Live!” as part of its 2011 summer theatre season.

Twenty-one three-minute songs that have taught generations of American children the basics of grammar, math, science, history and civics are woven together in a fun script about an anxious first-year teacher, played by Benn May, Commerce junior.
“The other characters are actually various aspects of the teacher’s personality, visiting him to sing songs about the subjects he will be teaching and reassuring him that he knows these topics well,” said Professor Scott Shattuck, director of the SFA School of Theatre and of the show.
The teacher’s renewed enthusiasm for his chosen profession makes this a ‘feel-good show’ that will appeal to everyone,” May said.
The production also has universal appeal because of the variety of musical genres represented in the songs, explained Lufkin graduate student Aden Kent Ramsey, the show’s musical director. “For instance, ‘Verb: That’s What’s Happening’ is a pop song, while ‘Sufferin’ Till Suffrage’ has a Motown feel. ‘The Preamble’ is done in a country and western style, and ‘A Victim of Gravity’ is reminiscent of a 1950s doo-wop songs.”
Ramsey went on to say that he is very impressed with the talented cast and their ability to master the lyrics, complicated harmonies and choreography. Only brief dialogues occur between the songs, so the six cast members spend most of their time on stage singing and dancing.
“It’s a very high energy show!” May exclaimed.
“Schoolhouse Rock Live!” will open at 6:30 p.m. Friday, June 24, and at the same time on Saturday, June 25; Wednesday, July 6; and Thursday, July 7.
Afternoon matinees at 2 will be presented on Thursday, July 7; and Wednesday, July 13. Morning performances at 9:30 will be offered on Thursday, July 14; and Friday, July 15.
The other show included in SFA’s summer theatre schedule is Tim Kelly’s classic ghost story, “The Uninvited.” It will be presented at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, June 29; Thursday, June 30; Tuesday, July 5; Friday, July 8; and Tuesday, July 12. A 2 p.m. matinee will be offered on Saturday, July 9.

SFA professor appointed to faculty at Mozart academy
Bruce Fowler, assistant professor of voice at Stephen F. Austin State University, is busily preparing for a trip to Austria this summer. But instead of pouring over guidebooks and mapping out an itinerary, he’s carefully studying two operas by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.
SFA Assistant Professor of Voice Bruce Fowler, who has a distinguished 20-year operatic career, will serve this summer on the faculty of the Austrian American Academy in Salzburg. Fowler learned in April of his appointment to the voice faculty of the Austrian American Mozart Academy in Salzburg, a program that provides specialized training for young singers in the performance of Mozart’s operas.
The tenor will be drawing on his own 20-year operatic career as he serves as one of two vocal professors and provides training in role preparation for the select group of 40 international singers. After approximately a month of rehearsals, the academy will stage “Die Zaubeflöte (The Magic Flute)” and “Der Schauspieldirektor (The Impressario),” which Fowler will stage direct.
Fowler said he is excited about his first teaching and stage direction appointment in Europe. “This is a wonderful opportunity for me to work outside the campus, to learn more and to improve my pedagogical techniques,” said Fowler. “I also see this as a great recruiting tool for SFA.”
A member of the SFA voice faculty since 2006, Fowler has sung with the Paris Opera, La Scala, the Salzburg Festival, Lyric Opera of Chicago and New York City Opera. He has performed in venues such as Carnegie Hall and Tanglewood and theatres in Berlin, Barcelona, Rome, Montreal, Vienna and Brussels.
He came to international attention as winner of the Plàcido Domingo Operalia Competition and has since collaborated with world-renowned opera artists, including Riccardo Chailly, Renée Fleming, Jessye Norman, Sherrill Milnes, Marc Minkowski, Jésus Lopez-Cobos and Vladimir Chernov.
Fowler is considered a premiere interpreter of the music of the Italian bel canto, baroque and classical eras. His concert and recital repertoire encompasses 10 languages. Recent engagements include “Semiramide” with Deutsche Oper Berlin and “La traviata” with the Akron Symphony Orchestra, and a concert of Italian songs with Voces Intimae of Dallas. And with the combined SFA choirs and orchestra, he has sung “Carmina Burana,” Giuseppe Verdi’s “Requiem” and Richard Danielpour’s “An American Requiem.”
Fowler is scheduled to present a faculty recital, “Songs and Arias of the Bel Canto,” in Cole Concert Hall at 7:30 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 26, as part of the SFA School of Music’s Cole Performing Arts Series.
