Notice is hereby given that on Tuesday, July 26, 2011, the Board of Trustees of the Nacogdoches Independent School District will hold a Special Board Meeting at 5:45 PM in the Nacogdoches Independent School District Board Room located in the Administration Building at 511 South University Drive, Nacogdoches, Nacogdoches County, Texas. The subjects to be discussed are listed on the agenda, which is attached to and made a part of this notice.

If during the course of the meeting covered by the notice, the Board of Trustees should determine that a closed or executive meeting or session of the Board of Trustees is required, then such closed or executive meeting or session as authorized by the Texas Open Meetings Act, Texas Government Code, Title V, Subchapter D, will be held by the Board of Trustees at the date, hour and place given in this Notice, or as soon after the commencement of the meeting covered by this Notice as the Board of Trustees may conveniently meet in such closed or executive meeting or session concerning any and all purposes permitted by the Act, including, but not limited to the following sections and purposes:

Texas Government Code Section:

1. 551.071 An executive session will be held for the purpose of having private consultation with the Board’s attorney for the purpose of discussing pending or contemplated litigation or a settlement offer, where the duty of counsel to his client, pursuant to the Code of Professional Responsibility of the State Bar of Texas, clearly conflicts with the Act;

 

2. 551.072 Deliberation of the purchase, exchange, lease, or value of real property if deliberation in an open meeting would have a detrimental effect on the position of the governmental body in negotiations with a third person;

Here’s what happened at the SFA Regents meeting

    The Stephen F. Austin State University Board of Regents voted unanimously Tuesday to name the Early Childhood Research Center in honor of Dr. Janice Pattillo, who is retiring after 42 years of service to the university.

Regents approved renaming SFAs early childhood research center as the Janice Pattillo Early Childhood Research Center.     The 120,000-square-foot facility opened in July 2009 and comprises the nationally accredited Early Childhood Laboratory, “exemplary” rated University Charter School and award-winning Department of Elementary Education.

    Regents also approved the naming of the new Student Success Center for Ed and Gwen Cole. The center is located in SFA’s newest residence hall, Lumberjack Landing.

    “Ed and Gwen Cole are two of our greatest supporters of this university,” said Dr. Baker Pattillo, SFA president. “They don’t have biological children of their own, but their children are the students of SFA, and they have been very generous in doing everything they can to make sure those students succeed.”

    Regents recognized Dr. James Standley, who is retiring after 41 years of service to the university, most recently serving as dean of the Graduate School. His duties as dean will be assumed by Dr. Mary Nelle Brunson, who will continue to serve also as associate vice president for academic affairs, a position she has held since 2008.

    Regents approved the adoption of the institutional budget for the 2011-12 fiscal year, which totaled $217.9 million. Regents approved the capital infrastructure plan for 2011-12 totaling $4.9 million. The plan addresses capital renewal, deferred maintenance and renovation projects, including the remodeling and renovating of the theatre area in the Griffith Fine Arts Building; elevator renovations; replacement of carpet, furniture and showers in Steen Hall; soccer field drainage maintenance; repair and replacement of football stadium fencing; and replacement and upgrades to air-conditioning system components.

    A $1.8 million capital operating plan budget also was approved. Among the items included in the plan are new microscopes for science labs at a cost not to exceed $306,000, television studio equipment at a cost not to exceed $225,000 and the installation of emergency call boxes at the SFA Trails.

    Regents recognized SFA Athletic Director Robert Hill, who was named Under Armour Athletic Director of the Year by the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics. Hill is in his seventh year as director, and under his leadership, SFA teams have won 22 Southland Conference titles and have made NCAA championship appearances in football, men’s basketball, women’s basketball, volleyball, soccer, softball and indoor/outdoor track.

    SFA Bass Club members Andrew Upshaw, a marketing senior from Hemphill, and Ryan Watkins, a kinesiology senior from Rockport, also were recognized by regents. The duo recently won the Mercury College B.A.S.S. National Championship in Arkansas. It was the second national championship in seven years for the SFA Bass Club.

Regents also approved:

-Policy revisions and revisions to the intercollegiate athletic policies and procedures manual;

-Renewal of a contract with Brivic media for media-buying services for up to four years at a cost not to exceed $100,000 per year;

-A contract with Simplex for fire alarm system testing at a price not to exceed $140,000 per year for the next three years;

-Extension of a contract with Hydrex Environmental for geological consulting services as needed on an hourly basis for five years at a total cost not to exceed $200,000;

-Authorizing the president to sign a contract for the purchase of natural gas;

-Additional grant awards for 2011 totaling $1.3 million and grant awards for 2012 of $9.4 million;

-An increase in the graduation fee from $25 to $50, and an increase in the late application fee from $50 to $100 beginning Sept. 1;

-Issuance of a request for proposals for a third-party billing service provider for services performed in the athletic training facility;

-The university holiday schedule for 2011-12; and

-The reappointment of the president, general counsel, director of audit services and coordinator of board affairs.

SFA musical theatre, theatre camps scheduled

    Registrations are still open for three different theatre camps being offered through the Stephen F. Austin State University College of Fine Arts during the first two weeks of August.

    The Music Preparatory Division of the SFA School of Music will be offering “Bach to the Future” for second through sixth graders Monday, Aug. 1, through Friday, Aug. 5, and “Glee Camp” Monday, Aug. 8, through Friday, Aug. 12, for students who have completed sixth through 12th grades.

    Both camps will be led by Nicole Stewart, director of the SFA Children’s Chorus.

    “Bach to the Future” will meet from 9 a.m. to noon each day in Room 125 of the Wright Music Building and will expose campers to the broad aspects of musical theatre.

    “Students will be taken ‘Bach’ in time to tell the tale of Johann Sebastian Bach’s successes, along with his many foibles and conflicts, through scenes featuring Bach’s familiar music,” Stewart said.

    Students will make props, build sets and be the actors and singers in the musical, which will be presented at 7 p.m. Friday, Aug. 5. Tuition is $75.

    Participants in “Glee Camp,” which will meet in the Wright Music Building from 6 to 9 p.m. Aug. 8 through 11, will learn music from the hit television show “Glee” and popular musicals, as well as choreography for the various songs. The camp will culminate in a 7 p.m. performance on Friday, Aug. 12. Tuition is $100.

    The third annual Junior Jack Camp, directed by SFA Assistant Professor of Theatre CC Conn and SFA theatre students pursuing their teaching certifications, will be held Monday through Friday, Aug. 1 through 12, at the Unity Church of Christianity, 2400 South St. in Nacogdoches.

    Students entering third through sixth grades will meet from 9 a.m. to noon, and those entering seventh through ninth grades will meet from 1 to 5 p.m. The two groups will each present a play during the end-of-camp performance the SFA Music Building on Saturday, Aug. 13. The time of the performance is not yet confirmed.

    Tuition for Junior Jack Camp is free, thanks to a service learning grant from SFA and matching funds from the Unity Church of Christianity, explained Conn.

    “We encourage parents to register as soon as possible since space is limited and the closing date is Monday, July 25,” Conn added.

On 7-18-2011 an Officer was dispatched to the lobby of UPD in reference to a Hit and Run. Upon arrival the Officer made contact with the complainant, who advised on 7-13-2011 her unattended vehicle was damaged in the Wilson Dr. Parking Garage. There are no suspects.

Friday July 15, 2011 – Monday July 18, 2011

On 7-16-2011 an Officer observed a vehicle disregard a stop sign on East College St. The Officer initiated a traffic stop and made contact with the driver. The Officer discovered the driver to be a minor that had been consuming alcohol. The subject was issued three citations. There is one suspect.

On 7-15-2011 an Officer was dispatched to Hall 14 in reference to Harassment. Upon arrival the Officer made contact with the complainant, who advised that on 7-15-2011 she received a harassing picture on her cell phone from a known person. There is one suspect.

Thursday July 14, 2011 – Friday July 15, 2011

On 7-14-2011 an Officer made contact with a complainant in the Business Office in reference to an Attempted Theft. The complainant stated on 7-13-2011 a known person attempted to pay his SFA tuition with an insufficient check from another person’s account. There is one suspect.

Wednesday July 13, 2011 – Thursday July 14, 2011

On 7-13-2011 an Officer was dispatched to University Woods Apartments in reference to Harassment. Upon arrival the Officer made contact with the complainant, who advised between 7-1-2011 and 7-13-2011 she received numerous unwanted text messages from an unknown person. There are no suspects.

On 7-13-2011 an Officer was dispatched to the Wilson Dr. Parking Garage in reference to Hit and Run. Upon arrival the Officer made contact with the complainant, who advised on 7-12-2011 his unattended motorcycle was damaged while parked in the Wilson Dr. Parking Garage. There are no suspects.

The Brutal Truth

     Well, it’s time for the brutal truth. I don’t mean that I am going to tell the truth in a brutal way, but I do mean that my subject will be the brutal truth; the “brutal truth” is what I am going to talk about.

     When people preface something they are about to say with, “To be perfectly honest….” I always wonder if they have been lying to me the whole time we’ve been talking and now they are going to begin speaking honestly.

     There’s a similar thing going on in my mind when people tell me that they are going to tell me the brutal truth. I wonder, “Have they been soft-soaping this the whole time and now they are going to knock me upside my head with some devastating news about who my real parents were and that I had been living a lie with a family that took me in after the government put my biological parents into a witness protection program?”

     I always wonder, I do that a lot, if in our relationships we mean to be mean or if after a while we simply give up on the niceties: “Put the toilet seat down when you get finished, You Moron!” There were all the lessons on raising the seat in the first place and now there is the antithesis, putting the seat back down when done.

     This seems so important to women; I wonder if they really wanted a person who thought that it was important to think like a woman if they shouldn’t just marry women to begin with and save all of that arguing and maligning conversation. I use this example freely since my own wife says I do well on this point. I am sort of androgynous.

     There are other points I am not so well-versed in, and these boundary disputes lead to epic battles based on, you guessed it, “the brutal truth.” I’ve known my girl for 42 years. We met when I was only 15. I’ll leave out the part where you can reverse engineer her age and get straight to the meat of the matter, my mouth. I’m tough as nails, play racquetball 8 hours a week, and have been a public educator for 33 years, retired as you know just of late. I say all this to remind myself that there is nothing in my make up that makes me especially weakened to the powers of a person who is half my size, but I have to give it to her: She packs a wallop.

     Some people just seem to have a special power over us. They can get to us, get under our skin, wear down our defenses, or otherwise upend to us. She points to her dainty foot, squints her eyes, and says those magic words that can turn my 220 pound mass into a bowl of quivering Jell-O, “Don’t make me put my foot down.”

     My friends have asked me what happens when she finally does put her foot down; I sincerely don’t know. I’ve never pushed it that far. I’ve seen glimpses. When she looks at me in that special way, I know all about the brutal truth. This is far beyond the usual devices like, “That’s fine.” Sheesh! Or the omni-directional, heat seeking, “I don’t care.” It sounds like a footnote from “Beelzebub’s Tales to His Grandson.” It reminds me of:

     “And this is the simple truth – that to live is to feel oneself lost. He who accepts it has already begun to find himself, to be on firm ground. Instinctively, as do the shipwrecked, he will look around for something to which to cling, and that tragic, ruthless glance, absolutely sincere, because it is a question of his salvation, will cause him to bring order into the chaos of his life. These are the only genuine ideas; the ideas of the shipwrecked. All the rest is rhetoric, posturing, farce.”

     I often find myself in this position: Rabbit has just left the stage in the first battle scene of the movie “8 Mile,” and his entire life is up in smoke. His friends are supportive, but they know that he has taken a major hit and may not ever get up again. Now, what to do? I was down for the count. Flowers, chocolates, dinner, a show, I had no idea, so I bought her a metal sign that reads, “Vampire Parking Only….violators will be bitten.” We were extras in the movie that is being filmed in town, Lansdale’s “Christmas with the Dead.” I was in no way saying that she was a blood sucker, so wipe that grin off of your face for thinking that I am in worse shape than ever. Is it too late to take it back? 1,440 minute rule, right?

     Okay, so part of the problem is that I use allusions and anecdotes that do not conform to her experiences and interests. I’m working on that. I‘ve only known her for 42 years, and I am a man, so that should buy me some slack, right?

     Okay, so let’s get on with it, the brutal truth. The brutal truth is that I am not particularly well-suited for domestic life. I get up early and start the day with a flurry of alternative choices. I say this because everything from the food I eat to the TV I watch and the books I read is an alternative to the choices she would make. In fact, we have so little in common it is a wonder that we ever met. We divorced and remarried after a 19 year separation, so that’s something we have in common. The brutal truth is that we are very different people, and I have no idea what she uses as a basis for making her decisions in life. She has hard and fast rules that apply to everything in the world; I don’t know where she stores the physical text of these rules, but the whole thing would not fit on a microchip a foot in diameter.

     I have 3 rules: Number One….Don’t tell me my food looks awful. I cook my own food, and it stands to reason that it would look just like you wanted it to if you would cook it for me; this is the alternative to that thought; you can see how I have a habit of getting into deep trouble. Number Two…Don’t wake me up by trying to stand in front of me and poke or shake me. I am very reactive when first coming out of sleep, and I can’t be held accountable for my actions under these circumstances. Fair warning. She does well on this point, but there was a learning curve. Rule Number Three: When I am hungry, it is too late to ask questions that require an immediate answer. I have low blood sugar and by the time I feel hungry I have already reached critical mass. These are things my friends all know about me, and they pay strict attention. One of my best friends said about my hunger, “I know how you get.”

     If anyone attempts to control, lengthen, manipulate, or vex the time periods having to do with my eating, they earn what they get. That being said, I try to travel with food as often as possible, and I try my hardest to be a solid citizen. I am human, and I often run into trouble about my habits, actions, mouth, and my intentions. My apologizing for who I am often gets in the way of my accomplishing other things, so I have choose my battles wisely, which is problematic in and of itself. Thank you Lady Gaga and Jenna Marbles.

     All this being said, I have no excuses, and I am not trying to get out of anything. I will talk about anything, anytime, anywhere, except when I am hungry. Unless you just need to stand clear of your own boredom, and then come ahead. “Zombie Parking Only……”

Watercolor East Texas exhibition to open

    The winners of Watercolor East Texas’ 27th annual juried exhibition will be announced on Saturday, July 23, at The Cole Art Center @ The Old Opera House in downtown Nacogdoches.

    Beginning at 1:30 p.m., juror Sandra L. Spann will present the awards and offer a critique. A reception will immediately follow.

    Spann, a signature member of the Southwest Watercolor Society, studied at Northeast Texas Community College for eight years with artist Jo Taylor, former student of the famed watercolorist Ed Whitney. She has also studied with Judi Betts, Margaret Kessler, Ann Templeton, Sharon Standridge, Skip Laurence and Tony Couch.

    The exhibition will be on view in the Ledbetter Gallery from Tuesday, July 26, through Saturday, Aug. 27. It is sponsored in part by Nacogdoches Junior Forum and the SFA Friends of the Visual Arts.

    The Cole Art Center is located at 329 E. Main St. Gallery hours are 12:30 to 5 p.m., Tuesday through Friday, and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday. Admission is free. For more information, please call (936) 468-1131.
