Obituary: Bettye Lenore Ashcraft Goetz

     Bettye Millard Ashcraft Goetz, 85, of Nacogdoches, Texas passed away Thursday, July 21, 2011 in Nacogdoches. A Memorial Service to celebrate her life will be held at 11:00 AM, Monday, July 25, 2011 at Christ Episcopal Church, Nacogdoches with the Reverend Patsy Barham officiating. She was born on March 10, 1926 in Center, Oklahoma. Bettye was the daughter of Wayne and Nell Millard, and was raised in East Texas, spending most of her life in Sherman, Texas before moving to Nacogdoches in1999. She was a former member of Fairview Presbyterian Church in Sherman, Texas. Survivors include her son, Gary Lee Ashcraft and wife, Charlotte of Nacogdoches, Texas and a sister, Sharlene Hammond and husband, Bill of Lumberton, Texas. In addition to her parents, Bettye was preceded in death by husbands, F. H. Ashcraft and James H. Goetz. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Nacogdoches Treatment Center, 119 Hughes Street, Nacogdoches, Texas 75961.

Obituary: Evelyn Jewell White

     Funeral service for Mrs. Evelyn Jewell Kelley White, 86, of Granbury, Texas formerly of Nacogdoches will be held on Monday, July 25, 2011, at 11:00 am at Laird Funeral Home with Rev. Ferrar Bentley officiating. Burial will be at Sunset Memorial Park.

     Mrs. White was born on March 4, 1925, in Browndel, Texas to the late Oscar L. and Jewell Chance Kelley. She passed away on July 21, 2011, in Granbury, Texas.

     Evelyn was raised in Sabine County, Texas. She and her family moved to Nacogdoches in the 1940s. She enjoyed sewing dresses, clothes and quilting as well as watching Dancing with the Stars. Evelyn was a very private but generous person. She was an excellent wife and mother and would help anyone in need. She worked all her life and took care of her family.

     Evelyn is survived by two daughters, Lisa Littlefield of Arlington, Texas and Virginia Cox and husband, Jim of Trinity, Texas; one son, John White and wife, Gail of Nacogdoches; two brothers, Bobby Kelley and wife, Monika of Granbury, Texas and Edwin Kelley and wife, Beverly of Longview, Texas; one sister, Nancy Womack of Bronson, Texas; three sisters-in-law, Martha Kelley of Katy, Texas, Avis Kelley of Katy, Texas and Lula Rose Kelley of Houston, Texas; one brother-in-law, Hershel Lawson of Jasper, Texas; numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and other extended family and good friends.

     In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by sisters, Maxine Lane, Frankie Coan, Shirley Jones, Jackie Robinson and Ida Nell Lawson; and brothers, Melton T., Oscar “Buddy”, William “Billy Joe and W.H. Kelley.

     Pallbearers will be Tommy Lambret, Buck Lee, Jerry Don Fultz, A.R. Armstrong, James Griffis and Dr. Nick Schwedock.

     In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to the Nacogdoches Senior Center, 621 Harris St., Nacogdoches, Texas 75961.

     Visitation will be held on Sunday, July 24, 2011, from 5-7 pm at Laird Funeral Home.

Wright (Democratic): Passing of Hall Nichols

     Our fellow longtime Democratic activist, union-builder, Precinct Chairman, and former County Chairman Hall Nichols has passed away. Funeral services will be held tomorrow (Saturday) at the Dicke Allen Funeral Home Chapel in Cushing. Visitation is scheduled for tonight from 6-8 at the same location. All other info is below:

     Funeral services for Hall E. Nichols, 83, of Cushing will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, July 23, 2011, at the Dickie Allen Funeral Home Chapel in Cushing with the Rev. Keith Tilley, the Rev. Ernest Dixon and Eric Nichols officiating. Interment will follow at McKnight Cemetery in Cushing. Mr. Nichols died Wednesday, July 20, 2011, in Nacogdoches. He was born December 11, 1927, in Cushing, Texas, the sixth child of George Washington and Elsie Whitaker Nichols. He was married to Mary Lee Vardeman December 24, 1949. He was a long-time union member and avid supporter of labor unions. He started a campaign to sign up Red Ball Motor Freight employees under union contract. This campaign lasted ten years, and 5,000 employees eventually became members. He was also a strong supporter of the Democratic Party and was elected Democratic Precinct chairman in Nacogdoches County in 1992. His views were often published in “Sound Off” in the Nacogdoches paper. Hall was a member of the Cushing 42 Club and won numerous tournaments. He was also a member of the Democratic Women of Nacogdoches, the Sons of the American Revolution, the Sons of the Republic of Texas, the Sons of the Confederate Veterans and the Nacogdoches Genealogy Society. He is preceded in death by his parents; sister, Helene Johnston-Denham; and infant sister, Adelle. Survivors include his wife, Mary Nichols of Irving, Texas; son and daughter-in-law, Gene and Margi Nichols of Irving, Texas; daughters and sons-in-law, Shirley and Thomas Rogers of Lubbock, Texas, and Barbara and Greg Iffland of Irving, Texas; brothers, Herbert Nichols of Cushing, Texas, Haward Nichols of Cushing, Texas, and Lester Nichols of Cushing, Texas; sister, Holly Blackburn of Nacogdoches, Texas; grandchildren, Jessica Brown, Eric Nichols, Matthew Nichols, Hannah Eyre and Mackenzie Iffland.; great-grandson, Owen Murphy; godson, Michael Milner of Irving, Texas; and numerous nieces and nephews.

     Visitation is scheduled from 6 until 8 p.m. Friday July 22, 2011, at the funeral home in Cushing. Dickie Allen Funeral Home, Cushing.

Figs this weekend at the Market

     Make sure to get your figs and green pears. Ian Stevens will be at the market this weekend selling figs and greens pears.

     Things to look for: baked goods (breads, cakes, cookies & pies), organic beef, candles, canned goods (wild-picked jams & jellies including may haw, blackberry, blueberry, muscatine and wild plum as well as jams, marmalades, preserves, chow-chow, pickled vegetables, salsas and relishes), ceramics, artisan Texas cheeses, free-range eggs, locally raised organic tilapia fish and tilapia fillets, flowers, fudge, herbs (basil, coriander, dill, oregano, rosemary & thyme), dried herbs, local raw honey, jewelry, loofah sponges, plants (house plants, starter plants, trees & whips), lye ftlinesoap, tamales and vinegars. Nacogdoches Convention & Visitors Bureau invites the community to “Bring it Home to Nacogdoches” trainings

     Officials from the Nacogdoches Convention & Visitors Bureau (CVB) invite the community to the “Bring it Home to Nacogdoches” trainings during this July and August. The first training will be held on Tuesday, July 26, while the second training will be held on Tuesday, August 30. Both trainings are free and will be held at 3 p.m. at the Visitor Center downtown. The training will provide all of the tools necessary to get groups and organizations on the right track to hosting their events in Nacogdoches. Participants will learn about CVB services as well as the great incentives the CVB offers.

Sherri Skeeters, assistant director of the CVB, holds up a sample of the Bring it Home to Nacogdoches resource manual that participants will receive at their training. Trainings will be held Tuesday, July 26 and Tuesday, August 30.

     “If you’ve ever wanted to bring your group to Nacogdoches but didn’t know where to start, this training is for you,” said Sherri Skeeters, assistant director for the Nacogdoches Convention and Visitors Bureau. “We will provide participants with step-by-step instructions as well as a resource manual to help them with the process of bringing their groups to Nacogdoches.”

     The “Bring it Home to Nacogdoches” campaign is an opportunity for local business leaders and community members to help promote Nacogdoches as a meeting destination. The campaign will concentrate not only on trade association meetings but also hobby groups, fraternal organizations, alumni organizations, and church groups.

     The purpose of the campaign is to help Nacogdoches by stimulating the local economy by generating economic impact in the form of traveler expenditures and local tax revenue, supporting local businesses that cater to the hospitality industry and by promoting Nacogdoches as a premier destination: affordable, safe and friendly, great attractions, museums, restaurants and hotels.

     “It is our hope that through this campaign, we will increase awareness of all the great complimentary meeting planning services available through the CVB,” said Skeeters. “We are also excited about the opportunity to reward local citizens with a cash incentive when they bring their group home to Nacogdoches.”

     Tourism pumps more than $70 million in direct spending into Nacogdoches County each year. Visitor spending supports 1,200 jobs in Nacogdoches County with earnings of more than $17.6 million. Without the local, state and federal taxes generated by the Texas travel industry, each household in Texas would have to pay $995 in additional taxes.

     Bringing visitors and meetings to Nacogdoches generates tourism dollars that will benefit our local economy. “If more local leaders encourage their groups to consider and book Nacogdoches, the ‘Bring it Home to Nacogdoches’ campaign can have a real impact for our community,” Skeeters said.
