Scholarship applications available for SFA’s Music Preparatory Division

Scholarship applications are now being accepted for music instruction through the Stephen F. Austin State University Music Preparatory Division. The partial tuition scholarships are awarded on the basis of need and can be applied to private lessons or group instruction.

Application forms are available on the division’s website, www.music.sfasu.edu/prep (under Programs), or may be picked up either at the Music Preparatory Division Office, 3028 Raguet St., or in the SFA School of Music Office, Room 150 of the Wright Music Building.

The maximum amount awarded for any student is 50 percent of the total tuition.

All scholarship applications must be received in the Music Preparatory Division office by Monday, Aug. 1, and must be accompanied by a copy of pages one and two of the applicant’s 2010 1040 Income Tax return or other proof of the previous year’s income.

Applications can be mailed to SFA Music Preparatory Division, P.O. Box 13043, SFA Station, Nacogdoches, TX 75962 or turned in to the Music Preparatory Division Office or the SFA School of Music Office.

The Music Preparatory Division has been serving the greater East Texas area for over 30 years, seeking to provide excellent musical training on any level of proficiency, said Pat Barnett, director.

“We offer private lessons for voice, piano, Suzuki violin/viola/cello, traditional violin/viola/cello and bass, classical guitar, cello, harp, flute, percussion and other instruments as requested,” said Barnett. “And we also offer Kindermusik classes for newborns through 5-year-olds, two children’s choirs serving second through eighth graders, the Piney Woods Youth Orchestra for students in middle through high schools, and an adult piano class.”

A new offering is designed to help interested students compose music. The private lessons for high schoolers through adults will meet for 12 weeks beginning the week of Sept. 12. Joshua Zinn, student of SFA Professor of Theory and Composition Stephen Lias, will be teaching the lessons.

For more information, please contact Barnett via e-mail at pbarnett@sfasu.edu or call her at (936) 468-1291.

City of Nacogdoches gears up to launch City of Service program, looks for experienced community organizer to lead effort

The City of Nacogdoches is searching for a chief service officer, a volunteer with experience in community organizing to help shape the local volunteerism.

For a one-year term, the Nacogdoches’ chief service officer will be a senior member of the mayor’s leadership team, responsible for the development and implementation of a high-impact service plan that leverages citizen service to address the city’s most pressing challenges. In developing the plan, this volunteer will work with administration experts and other key stakeholders, identify specific strategies to address community concerns, and plan service-related events.

This initiative is supported in part by AARP. For more than 50 years, AARP has been serving its members and society and creating positive social change. Now, the membership-based advocacy organization is helping bring Cities of Service to smaller cities across the country, including Nacogdoches.

“We are extremely excited to be partnering with AARP in this endeavor,” said Nacogdoches Mayor Roger Van Horn. “What a wonderful example of private-public partnership that will benefit our city so greatly.”

Last fall, Mayor Van Horn signed a “Declaration of Service,” committing to lead a multi-year effort to expand community service and volunteerism. In doing so, Nacogdoches joined hundreds of cities of all sizes across the country participating in Cities of Service. For more information about the declaration and the Cities of Service program, visit: http://www.citiesofservice.org/

“We look forward to helping the city shine a spotlight on the great volunteerism already taking place while laying a framework to enable volunteers to have an even bigger impact where it’s most needed,” said AARP’s Associate State Director of Outreach Marla Turner, whose work centers around East Texas.

Strong candidates for the chief service officer position will have:

● Experience in program or business design, management, or evaluation,
● Entrepreneurial spirit,
● Initiative, persistence, and positive attitude,
● Flexibility to meet multiple and unpredictable demands,
● Well-developed interpersonal and team working skills, and
● Strong communication skills.

Applicants should send a resume to Turner (msturner@aarp.org). AARP will help identify strong job candidates and the mayor’s office will make the final selection.
