In memory of the 3,000 men and women who lost their lives 10 years ago on Sept. 11, the Stephen F. Austin State University A Cappella Choir will present “Stars and Stripes Forever,” a multi-sensory concert, at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 11, in W.M. Turner Auditorium.
“For many of us, 9/11 was ‘the’ event that changed the way we live—two wars, personal privacy issues, security, etc. are all results of the fateful attacks,” said Tim King, SFA director of choral activities and the A Cappella Choir. “This concert honors those who sacrificed their lives that day and all those who have died to keep us free.”
Brad Maule, former daytime television star and lecturer in the SFA School of Theatre, will serve as emcee for the concert. The first half of the program will consist primarily of well-known patriotic songs, enhanced with projected visuals.
The concert’s second half is devoted to “Our Flag Was Still There” by Deborah Craig-Claar. The six songs included in this larger work will be interspersed with recorded interviews by local residents: WW II veteran Tom Wright, Viet Nam veteran Johnny Johnson and naturalized citizen Alicia Coffman.
Additional recorded interviews were conducted with members of the SFA Children’s Chorus and A Cappella Choir member Joseph Dennis, who recently completed an internship in Italy.
Joining the A Cappella Choir for this concert will be SFA Professor of Voice Deborah Dalton appearing as Kate Smith, the SFA Children’s Chorus and Junior Chorale, SFA orchestral students and the SFA ROTC. Representatives of all branches of the military will present the colors.
The Nacogdoches Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution will host a post-performance reception in Griffith Gallery, located across the hall from Turner Auditorium.
The auditorium and gallery are located in the Griffith Fine Arts Building, 2222 Alumni Dr., on the SFA campus.

In response to the state’s need for educational leaders and challenging economic times, StephenF.AustinStateUniversity is making selected education degree programs more accessible and affordable for nontraditional students.
The James I. Perkins College of Education is now offering three degree programs completely online and at reduced prices. The SFA programs include the Master of Education in educational leadership with principal’s certification, the Master of Education in early childhood and the Bachelor of Science Head Start degree completer program.
“These programs involve existing SFA courses taught by our highly qualified faculty members,” said Dr. Judy Abbott, dean of the Perkins College of Education.
“The difference is simply that we have identified these programs as especially critical for preparing future graduates for important work in the field of education. We are becoming more flexible in order to better meet the immediate education needs of today’s students, many of whom are working adults with families who don’t necessarily live close enough to SFA to attend traditional classes.”
The Master of Education in educational leadership with principal’s certification is a 30-credit-hour program and is being offered for $5,500. This price is only available to Texas residents.
The Master of Education in early childhood program requires 36 credit hours and is priced at $8,150. Because the Head Start degree is a completer program, cost varies according to the number of college hours a student already has fulfilled. The price for that program is less than $200 per credit hour.
Unique eligibility and admission criteria are required for each of the three programs, Abbott said.
“In the 21st century, there are countless ways in which to earn a degree online,” Abbott said. “But SFA’s reputation for offering the highest quality programming and providing the best preparation for our education graduates makes our institution stand out in the crowd.
“It’s our affordability coupled with our reputation for academic excellence that makes these offerings such an extraordinary value.”
The Master of Education in early childhood and Head Start degree completer programs also offer compressed course schedules, reducing the length of each required course from 15 to eight weeks. The concentrated schedule not only allows students to complete their degrees faster, but it also provides six different program entry points throughout the year as opposed to the traditional four.
“Historically, people have thought of a university as a place – a specific location where students go to receive an education,” Abbott said. “What we are trying to do with these and other online degree programs at SFA is meet adult workers where they are so that they may take advantage of some of the same education and career opportunities that our traditional students enjoy.”

Funeral service for Mrs. Marilyn Kay Gill Lewis, 48, of Nacogdoches, Texas, will be held on Saturday, September 10, 2011 at 2:00 PM at Laird Funeral Home with Bro. Sonny Scarbrough officiating.
Mrs. Lewis was born on November 30, 1962 in Houston, Texas to Harvey Earl Gill Sr. and Carroll Sue Hamil Gill. She passed away on September 5, 2011 in Galveston, Texas.
Marilyn was a graduate of Central Heights High School and was a member of Shady Grove Baptist Church of Nacogdoches. She enjoyed going to her family’s lake house and boating, water skiing, and tubing. Marilyn loved to go camping, watch movies, and was a fantastic cook. She also loved spending time with her family, friends, and husband, but most of all; she loved being with her grandbabies. They truly meant everything to her. Marilyn was a wonderful mother, wife, daughter, sister and grandmother, and will be greatly missed by all those that knew and loved her.
Marilyn is survived by her husband, Edward Lewis Sr. of Nacogdoches; a son, Edward Lee Lewis Jr. and fiance, Cathy of Nacogdoches; a daughter, Regina Kay Griffith and husband, William of Palestine; parents, Harvey Earl Gill Sr. and Carroll Sue Hamil Gill of Nacogdoches; grandchildren, Delwin Lee Lewis Belcher, Cody Alan Lewis, Dustin Ragaen Griffith, Faith Rosemary Griffith, Edward Lee Lewis III, and Zoey Neveah Lewis; siblings, Sue Lewis (special aunt) of Nacogdoches, Harvey Earl and Jamie Gill Jr. of Nacogdoches, Carol Sue and Scott Spangler of Nacogdoches, Karen Annett and Jeff Rodgers of Nacogdoches, Karen Elizabeth and Kenny Hensley of Nacogdoches, Billy Joe Lewis of Lousiana, Earnest and Jennifer Lewis of Louisiana, Diane and Edward Marshall of Texas, and Wayne Kiliboro of Texas; grandma, Opal Elzada Gill of Nacogdoches, and many loving nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. She was preceded in death by her grandfather, D.T. Gill; grandparents, Dwight Marven and Mildred Freda Hamil; mother-in-law, Dora B. Lewis; granddaughter, Kelsey Michelle Lewis; uncle, Bookie Gill; aunt, Shirley Sustaita; and sister-in-law, Peggy Hope.
Pallbearers will be Edward Lewis Sr., Edwards Lewis Jr., Billy Lewis, Harvey Earl Gill Jr., Rickey Flanagan and Justin Spangler.
Honorary Pallbearers will be Delwin Lee Lewis Belcher, William Griffith, Jimmy Reeves, Jimmy Joe Sustaita, Earnest Lewis, Blake Webb and Dustin Howard.
Visitation will be held on Friday, September 9, 2011 at Laird Funeral Home from 6 until 8 PM.
Fire Update: The fire has expanded north & is currently burning in Cherokee County on State Hwy 204. The fire appears to be an outbreak from the Angelina River Bottom Fire and has unexpectedly moved north due to strong winds. 200 acreas have been burned. The fire has jumped containment barriers in both Douglass and north of Lilbert. Residents in the Dexter Community have been evacuated. State Hwy 204 and FM 1648 remain open at this time, but may be closed. CR 3 and State Hwy 21 remain closed at this time.
