Precinct 4’s September 20th warrant roundup (With Photos)

     4 p.m. UPDATE: “We have arrested 15 of the 18 suspects. The suspects who have not been arrested at this time are Rebekah Middleton, Michael Birdwell and David Knight.

     32 of the 36 felony warrants have been served with 15 of the 18 defendants in jail as of 4 p.m. Tuesday afternoon. The constable office is seeking information on the whereabouts of the other three suspects.

     The Nacogdoches County Constable Office precinct 4, was assisted by the PCT 1 Constable Office and the Nacogdoches County Sheriff office in serving the felony warrants.

     The Nacogdoches County Constable Office Precinct 4 conducted a drug round up as part of an ongoing year long investigation into the distrubition of methamphetamine in Nacogdoches County. Constable Jason Bridges stated that his office has obtained 36 warrants for 18 people for the offense of delivery of a controlled substance. The constable office has been conducting undercover operations for the last year in an effort to identify distributors of narcotics in our county.

     Constable J. Bridges stated that this investigation started in the Kingtown community after our office received several complainants about criminal activity. Five of the 18 people being arrested today are from the Kingtown community and they have 9 charges pending against them. Bridges stated that the operation continued from there and branched out all across Nacogdoches County.

     “During that time our office has been able to identify what we believe are several high value methamphetamine dealers that have been distributing methamphetamine at a large volume,” Bridges said. “Our aim was to identify the biggest methamphetamine suppliers in Nacogdoches County, and these names continued to come up after each investigation we conducted.”

     Constable Bridges stated that these arrests should play a significant role in helping reducing the amount of methamphetamine and other drugs that are being distributed on our streets.

     The constable office is being assisted in the Drug round up by the Precinct 1 Constable Office and the Nacogdoches County Sheriff’s Office.

SFA to stage student-directed ‘The Saga of Cuchulain’

    The Stephen F. Austin State University School of Theatre will present a student-directed production of W.B. Yeats’ “The Saga of Cuchulain” at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 23, and at 2 and 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 24. All performances are in the Downstage Theatre located on the first floor of the Griffith Fine Arts Building.

    The full-length production, which is taken from a series of plays known as the Cuchulain Cycle, is actually three dance plays, explained Weslaco senior Jonathan Garcia, director.

    “In beautiful detail, Yeats uses his symbolic form of poetry and a westernization of the Japanese Noh theatre to tell the story of the life and death of the man often called the ‘Irish Achilles,’” Garcia continued.

    Allen junior Jacob Saffle plays the title role. Other principal cast members are La Porte sophomore Shelby Bray and Mount Pleasant senior Stephen Graham.

    Garcia’s previous SFA directing credits include “Tom and Jerry,” “The Interrogation,” “A Florentine Tragedy,” “The Philadelphia” and “Wolfie,” which he assistant directed.

    He has appeared in SFA’s productions of “How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying,” “Almost, Maine,” “Woyzeck,” “The Adventures of Homer McGundy, Revised” and “Bad Boy Nietzsche.” Garcia has also been a member of The Original Cast since 2009.

SFA to open exhibition of rarely seen works by John Heliker

    The Stephen F. Austin State University College of Fine Arts and School of Art will open “John Heliker: Drawing on the New Deal 1932-1948” with a 6 to 8 p.m. reception on Saturday, Sept. 24, in The Cole Art Center @ The Old Opera House in downtown Nacogdoches.

Self-Portrait by John Heliker is one of the pieces included in John Heliker: Drawing on the New Deal 1932-1948, which the Stephen F. Austin State University College of Fine Arts and School of Art will open at 6 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 24, in The Cole Art Center @ The Old Opera House in downtown Nacogdoches.

    The exhibition features a relatively unknown body of work by American artist John Heliker (1909-2000), who achieved early fame for his expressionistic work.

    “The drawings, watercolors and sketchbooks included in the show demonstrate the shift Heliker made between 1932 and 1948 to powerfully expressive figure drawings, cubist-inspired landscapes and biomorphic abstractions in diverse media,” said Dr. David A. Lewis, SFA associate professor of art history.

    In 2009, Lewis was awarded the 2009 Heliker-LaHotan Summer residency. He has completed extensive research on the artist and serves as the exhibition’s curator.

    Most of the pieces for the exhibition are on loan from the Heliker–LaHotan Foundation. Only a few of the works have been exhibited in the past 60 years.

    On Thursday, Nov. 17, the SFA School of Art will present a panel discussion related to the exhibition. Serving on the panel will be art critic Jed Perl of New York City; Patricia Bailey, president of the Heliker-LaHotan Foundation; and art collector and artist Michael Ricker of Garland.

    The exhibition will be on view in the Florence Wilson Reavley Gallery of The Cole Art Center, located at 329 E. Main St., through Saturday, Nov. 26. Regular gallery hours are 12:30 to 5 p.m., Tuesday through Friday, and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday. Admission is free.

    “John Heliker: Drawing on the New Deal 1932-1948” is a part of the 2011-2012 University Series and is sponsored in part by the Heliker-LaHotan Foundation, Dorothy Carsey Sumner, Nacogdoches Junior Forum and SFA Friends of the Visual Arts.

Obituary: Dominica Hooks Talley

     Dominica L. Hooks Talley, 49, of Nacogdoches, Texas, passed away Saturday, September 17, 2011 at Oak Manor Nursing Home. A memorial service will be held at 2 PM, Tuesday, September 20, 2011 at Laird Funeral Home Chapel with Bro. Sonny Scarborough officiating. Dominica was born January 15, 1962 in Dallas, Texas.

Obituary: Arthur Lockhart

     Arthur Lee “Acey” Lockhart, 82, of Nacogdoches, Texas passed away peacefully on September 16, 2011. Arthur was born on January 20, 1929 in Coleman, Texas and lived there until moving to Dallas in 1940. He graduated from North Dallas High School in 1946. Shortly after graduating he joined the Navy Reserves and began working for Hydrotex Industries, where he worked for 40 years eventually retiring as CEO. Arthur married Kathleen Skinner on February 14, 1986, in Fredericksburg, Texas.

     Some of Arthur’s many passions included golf, hunting, and cooking. His generosity was apparent to all who knew him. He had a wonderful sense of humor, a compassionate heart, and was the type of man who never met a stranger. All who knew and loved him will miss him tremendously. He was a loving husband, as well as a wonderful father and grandfather.

     He is survived by his loving wife of 25 years, Kathleen Lockhart of Nacogdoches; Debra Nowell and husband, Ted of Mesquite; Lisa Bulchak and husband, Bryan of Mesquite; Robert Lockhart and wife, Sheila of McKinney, David Rabe of Nacogdoches; Brandee Rabe of Houston and Joli Barker of McKinney; thirteen grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and a sister, Mamie Ray Britt of Houston; as well as two nieces and a nephew.

     He was preceded in death by Arthur Lee Lockhart Sr. and Lula Mae Blackstone Lockhart.

     Services will be held on Tuesday, September 20, 2011 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Nacogdoches, TX. A Rosary will begin at 10:30am followed by a Memorial Mass at 11 with Reverend Monsignor James E. Young officiating.

     Memorial contributions to Sacred Heart Catholic Church or St. Mary’s Chapel on the SFA campus.

Obituary: Delfino Castillo

     A visitation will be held for Mr. Delfino Castillo, 80, of Nacogdoches, Texas on Friday, September 16, 2011 from 5 until 8 PM at Laird Funeral Home. A funeral service will be held in Mexico at a later date.

     Mr. Castillo was born on December 24, 1930 in San Luis Potosi, Mexico to the late Angel Castillo and Jovita Medrano. He passed away peacefully on Wednesday, September 14, 2011 in Nacogdoches, Texas.

     Delfino is survived by three sons, Simon Castillo of Nacogdoches, Prisciliano Castillo and wife, Virginia of Nacogdoches, and Armando Castillo and wife, Gumara of Lufkin, Texas; six daughters, Elvia Castillo and husband, Ricardo Trejo of Nacogdoches, Antonia Escobar and husband, Bernabe of Nacogdoches, Maria Martinez and husband, Jorge of Nacogdoches, Maria Rocia Saldana and husband, Leon of Lufkin, Juana Sanchez and husband, Jose of Nacogdoches, and Elsa Hernandez and husband, Honorio of Nacogdoches. He is also survived by a brother, Teodoro Castillo of Nacogdoches; a sister, Silvestra Martinez and husband, Pablo of Mexico; 41 grandchildren, and 26 great-grandchildren.

     He is preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Gregoria DelaRosa Castillo, and a son, Santos Castillo. He is also preceded by five brothers, Reyes Castillo, Jose Pilar Castillo, Hilario Castillo, Carmelo Castillo, and Polinar Castillo; and three sisters, Petra Rodriguez, Margarita Juarez, and Antonia Castillo.
