SFA orchestra to present ‘On a Romantic Note’ concert

    The Stephen F. Austin State University Orchestra of the Pines will present music from the romantic era during its concert at 7:30 p.m. Monday, Nov. 14, in Cole Concert Hall on the SFA campus.

SFA Associate Professor Deb Scott will be the featured trombone soloist during the Orchestra of the Pines concert at 7:30 p.m. Monday, Nov. 14, in Cole Concert Hall on the SFA campus.

    Included on the program are the prelude to Engelbert Humperdinck’s “Hansel and Gretel” and Antonín Dvorák’s Symphony No. 9 in E minor, “From the New World.”

    Deb Scott, SFA associate professor of music, will join the orchestra on its performance of Launy Grondahl’s Concerto for Trombone and Orchestra.

    An active performer and clinician in classical and jazz styles, Scott teaches trombone and bass trombone at SFA and is the director of the university’s jazz band, The Swingin’ Aces.

    Currently, she is a member of the SFA Faculty Brass Quintet and the Longview Symphony.

    She has also performed with the International Trombone Festival’s Cramer Trombone Choir, the Twentieth Century Unlimited Orchestra in Santa Fe, the New Mexico Music Festival in Taos, the Arkansas Symphony, the Lubbock Symphony Orchestra, the Greeley (Colo.) Philharmonic and the Barnum and Bailey Greatest Show on Earth Circus Band.

    Scott earned her doctorate in trombone performance from the University of North Texas, her master’s from the University of Northern Colorado and her two bachelor’s degrees from Texas Tech University.

Obituary: William Bryan Robbins, III

     An inurnment service for Mr. William B. Robbins, III, of Nacogdoches, Texas will be held at 10:00 am on Monday, November 14, 2011, at Harmony Cemetery with Chaplain Don Ross officiating.

     Mr. Robbins was born on June 27, 1945, in Edmonton Alberta, Canada to William B. Jr. and Josephine E. Sempo Robbins. He passed away peacefully on on November 9, 2011, in Nacogdoches.

     He is survived by his loving wife, Kelly Eddins Robbins of Nacogdoches; two daughters, Tracie Pannell and husband, Dean of St. Charles, Illinois and Angela O’Keefe and husband, Dan of Ipswich, MA; one step-son, Rickey Hayes and wife, Nancy of Cypress, Texas; one sister, Joy Hubby and husband, Ron of Clovis, NM; six grandchildren; as well as numerous nieces, nephews and other extended family and good friends.

     At the families request there will be no visitation.

Obituary: Tommie Alders

     Funeral service for Mrs. Tommie Virginia Muckleroy Alders, 81, of Nacogdoches, Texas will be held on Saturday, November 12, 2011, at 10:00 am at Eastside Pentecostal Church with Rev. Enis Fuller, David Alders and Bro. Glen Morton officiating. Interment will follow at Fairview Cemetery.

     Mrs. Alders was born on December 25, 1929, in Nacogdoches, Texas to the late A.J. “Son” and Clara Hamby Muckleroy. She passed away peacefully on November 9, 2011, in Nacogdoches, Texas.

     Tommie was a lifelong resident of Nacogdoches and graduated from Nacogdoches High School. She had a long working career ending with 20 years of service as a rural carrier with the United States Postal Service in Nacogdoches. She was an active DRT member, a member of the Colonial Dames and the James Haggard Chapter 1812. Tommie also volunteered for the Nacogdoches Fire and Rescue Rehab. She had also been a Cub Scout Den Mother and was involved in the Young Home Makers of America. She was a previous Sunday school teacher and had held numerous positions in the church through the years and was a member of Eastside Pentecostal Church of Nacogdoches.

     Tommie was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She loved her grandchildren and rarely missed out on their sporting events at school and in the summer. She was a wonderful cook, who prepared many many meals for her family throughout the years, but also loved to do so at Thanksgiving and Christmas. She canned in the spring and summer and entered the County Fair each year for competition. She enjoyed doing cross stitch as a pass time as well. All who knew Mrs. Alders will miss her tremendously.

     She is survived by her loving husband of 63 years, Nathan Alders, Sr.; her daughter, Donna Rogers and husband, Marty and her son, Nathan “Poogie” Alders, Jr. and wife, Connie all of Nacogdoches; seven grandchildren, Melody Kennedy and husband, Casey, Kyle Alders and wife, Jenna, Justin Rogers and wife, April, Stephen Alders, Jonathan Rogers, Christopher Alders and Cade Alders; four great-grandchildren, Derek, Allie, Katie and Luke Kennedy; as well as numerous other extended family, church family and good friends.

     In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her sister, Carolyn Stanaland.

     Pallbearers will be Kyle Alders, Justin Rogers, Jonathan Rogers, Stephen Alders, Christopher Alders, Cade Alders, Casey Kennedy, Derek Kennedy and Luke Kennedy.

     Memorial Contributions may be made in Mrs. Alders honor to Eastside Pentecostal Church, 3801 Center Highway, Nacogdoches, Texas 75961 or a charity of your choice.

     Visitation will be held on Friday, November 11, 2011, from 6-8 pm at Laird Funeral Home.

SFA’s ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’ features movement, professionalism

    Passion, enchantment and exhilarating movement await audiences in W.M. Turner Auditorium as the Stephen F. Austin State University School of Theatre presents William Shakespeare’s “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 15, through Saturday, Nov. 19.

Angela Bacarisse, SFA associate professor of costume design, checks the cape SFA Visiting Assistant Professor David Studwell will wear as he portrays Oberon, King of the Fairies, in William Shakespeares A Midsummer Night’s Dream. The SFA School of Theatre will present the comedy at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 15, through Saturday, Nov. 19, in W.M. Turner Auditorium.

    “It’s full of laughs, fairies, magic, and even a little sword fighting!” said Weslaco senior Jonathan Garcia, who portrays Demetrius, one of the lovers.

    “And its hilarious telling of an age-old story of unrequited love makes it relevant to just about everyone,” explained Rusk senior Rachel Joseph, who plays Demetrius’ love interest, Hermia.

    For this particular production, the SFA actors are being directed by New York-based guest artist Chuck Hudson and sharing the stage with two veteran actors.

    Hudson, a gymnast, mime and Paris-trained fencing master as well as director with credits in Italy, South Africa and throughout the United States, is mounting an unusually physical production with an accent on colorful visual elements, explained School of Theatre Director Scott Shattuck.

    Visiting Assistant Professor David Studwell, an award-winning professional actor with 27 years of experience at leading theaters in New York, Chicago and other major cities, is cast as Oberon, King of the Fairies, and Professor Rick Jones, with more than 30 roles to his credit, portrays Hermia’s father, Egeus.

    Studwell said he loves this kind of collaboration with the students. “It reminds me of the European master, journeyman, apprentice model—a tried and true system in which you learn by doing.”

    Longview senior Diedre Cantrell, who plays Oberon’s wife, Titania, said she appreciates having both Jones and Studwell in the cast. “They bring that extra bit of professionalism and work ethic to the production, and they are great examples for the students actors to observe in terms of what will be expected of us once we enter the professional world.”

    “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” is a joint presentation of the SFA College of Fine Arts, School of Theatre and University Series.

    Prior to the opening night performance on Tuesday, Nov. 15, Hudson will give an informative talk at 7 p.m. in Griffith Gallery, located across the hall from Turner Auditorium. The audience is invited back to the gallery for a post-performance reception to meet the cast and honor the event’s corporate sponsor, Tipton Ford-Lincoln.

26th Anniversary of the Nacogdoches ArtWalk

     In 1986, five Nacogdoches gallery-studios joined together to present the first Nacogdoches ArtWalk. This November, Nacogdoches will celebrate its 26th annual ArtWalk. On November 12, 2011, from 4 p.m. to 8p.m., the following Nacogdoches galleries will offer the community art exhibits, refreshments, and door prizes.

     Caddo Trail Arts , a new gallery located at 404 East Main Street, will display local art as well as Tappa’s Photography, Danna’s Framing, and the Pineywoods Trading Company featuring jewelry and beadwork.

     The Cole Art Center at 329 East Main Street invites Art Walk attendees to view “The Legacy of Diedrich Rulfs: Architect of Nacogdoches,” an exhibition of photographs taken by Christopher Talbot, interim director of the SFA School of Art.

     Glass Castles is pleased to host the talented jewelers that will have table loads of silver, copper, gold, glass, flowers, beads and stones. Anne Tindell has been part of our studio for almost 1400 pairs of earrings. She continues to add unusual designs without ever compromising her distinct style. Tina Pierson has been expanding her jewelry into china, crystals and raindrops. She still makes the delicate floral stained glass pendants.

     David and crew will be working on commissions for churches. Mims Chapel in Avinger is replacing their old doors with inserts of the Methodist symbol. We are also building the last window in the main sanctuary. Immaculate Conception in Moral is opening their foyer transom to be lit by a window of bevels and color. The design will copy the existing Dalle de verre glass windows that they made in 2000.

     Teresa will display icons of ArchAngel Raphael that are in progress. She is studying with the Prosopon School of Russian Iconology. She has attended workshop/ retreats in 2009 with Master Iconographer Jennifer Perkins and with Master Iconographer Fr. Mefodii in 2010 and 2011.

     LaNana Creek Gallery is celebrating its sixth anniversary this fall. We represent over thirty artists from the East Texas area and abroad. Our gallery features pottery, jewelry, antiques, and fine art of various mediums. Come visit us at 402 East Main Street in historic downtown Nacogdoches.

     Pilar Street Antiques and Art Gallery, at 210 East Pilar Street, features the work of six artists: award-winning Mary Hooper’s scenes from the Old West, florals, wildlife and portraits; Southwestern Watercolor Society signature member Peggy Fare’s watercolors of larger-than-life florals, candid portraits, and landscapes; Carlene McClinton’s landscapes, florals, and old trucks; Carolyn Rorie’s baby portraits, florals, and fanciful paintings of Santa Claus; Kathleen Worrell’s watercolors of the southwest, nature, and abstracts; and Frances Ponder’s landscapes and still lifes in oil. Members of Watercolor East Texas will also exhibit.

     Located at 203 East Main Street, The Runaway Mule: A Culture Shop is a new gallery on the brick streets. Owner Tim Bryant will offer original design t-shirts, jewelry, books, and work by local artists.

NACOGDOCHES MAIN STREET RECEIVE NATIONAL RECOGNITION

Debra Farst, Texas Main Street Program State Coordinator, Nacogdoches Main Street Manager Sarah OBrien, and Deputy Executive Director, Texas Historical Commission Terry Colley, are present last week at Hotel Fredonia during the 2011 Texas Downtown Association Annual Conference.

     The City of Nacogdoches Main Street Program has been commended for its successful annual progress as a designated Main Street community. The Texas Historical Commission (THC) and its Texas Main Street Program (TMSP) made the announcement November 2nd at the annual statewide downtown revitalization conference co-hosted by the TMSP and the Texas Downtown Association, in historic downtown Nacogdoches at Hotel Fredonia. Nacogdoches was also one of a twenty eight communities recognized for having been nationally recognized 10 years or more since 1999, when the National Recognition program began. “We had such a great week hosting this conference,” said Main Street Manager Sarah O’Brien. “It is an honor that we were able to receive this recognition on our own turf.”

     The 55 National Recognition cities, which represent the real places of Texas, include: Amarillo, Bastrop, Bay City, Beaumont, Brenham, Bridgeport, Canton, Canyon, Carthage, Celina, Colorado City, Corsicana, Del Rio, Denton, Electra, Elgin, Farmersville, Ferris, Georgetown, Goliad, Gonzales, Graham, Grapevine, Greenville, Harlingen, Henderson, Hillsboro, Huntsville, Kerrville, La Grange, Laredo, Levelland, Livingston, Llano, Longview, Lufkin, McKinney, Mount Pleasant, Mount Vernon, Nacogdoches, New Braunfels, Odessa, Palestine, Paris, Pecos, Plainview, Rio Grande City, Rockwall, San Angelo, San Marcos, Seguin, Taylor, Waxahachie, Weatherford and Winnsboro. These cities will be further recognized as Nationally Accredited by the National Trust for Historic Preservation next April in Baltimore, MD at the annual conference of the National Trust Main Street Center.

     “Throughout 2011 we have been celebrating the Texas Main Street Program’s 30 years of progress, having taken our first designated cities in 1981. Recognizing these cities for their efforts in revitalizing their historic downtowns takes on special meaning this year. The programs being acknowledged are large and small from all areas of the state, showing that the Main Street model is appropriate for all kinds of communities with historic downtowns,” said Debra Farst, TMSP state coordinator.

     National accredited Main Street cities show above average performance in ten categories on an annual report. Selection criteria focus on planning, partnerships, staffing, volunteer effort, preservation ethic, training and program assessment through reporting. On 11-8-2011 an Officer was dispatched to the lobby of UPD in reference to Credit Card Abuse. Upon arrival the Officer made contact with the complainant, who advised on 11-7-2011 she lost her SFA student ID and on 11-8-2011 an unknown person used her Jackbucks without her permission. There are no suspects.

On 11-8-2011 an Officer was dispatched to the Baker Pattillo Student Center in reference to Theft. Upon arrival the Officer made contact with the complainant, who advised between October and November the battery to an ATV had been stolen from unit parked outside the Baker Pattillo Student Center. There are no suspects.

Monday November 7, 2011 – Tuesday November 8, 2011

On 11-7-2011 an Officer was dispatched to the Student Recreation Center in reference to Assault. Upon arrival the Officer made contact with the complainant, who advised on 11-7-2011 he was assaulted by a known subject at the Student Recreation Center. The suspect was issued a citation for Assault. There is one suspect.

On 11-7-2011 an Officer was dispatched to the Forestry Building in reference to Assault. Upon arrival the Officer made contact with the complainant, who advised on 11-4-2011 he was assaulted by an unknown subject near the Forestry Building. There are no suspects.

On 11-7-2011 an Officer was dispatched to the lobby of UPD in reference to Theft. Upon arrival the Officer made contact with the complainant, who advised on 10-29-2011 items were stolen from her unsecured residence at Lumberjack Village. There are no suspects.

On 11-7-2011 an Officer was dispatched to the lobby of UPD in reference to Criminal Mischief. Upon arrival the Officer made contact with the complainant, who advised between 11-4-2011 and 11-6-2011 an organizations bulletin board was damaged in the Music Building. There are no suspects.
