Obituary: Garry Lynn Evans

     Mr. Garry Lynn Evans, 52, passed away on January 9, 2012 at his residence. He was born on February 11, 1959 in Wichita Falls, Texas, to parents Burl J. Evans, Sr. and Peggy Joe Hurst Evans.

     Funeral services have been set for 1:00 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 15, 2012, at Cason Monk-Metcalf Sunset Chapel, located at 5400 North Street in Nacogdoches, with Bro. John McGuire officiating. Entombment will follow at Sunset Memorial Park, located at 5127 North Street in Nacogdoches.

     Garry was a loving father, a wonderful son, a wonderful brother who will be missed by those who knew him most. Garry was a very private man who was respectful, polite and willing to help anyone who asked.

     He is survived by daughter, Megan Evans; mother, Peggy Joe Hurst Evans, father, Burl Evans, Sr. and wife Gay; twin brother, Col. Larry Evans and wife Jennifer; brothers, B. J. Evans, Jr., Jeff Evans and wife Mary, sisters; Becky Graves Canyon, Debbie Evans Dietz and husband Ron; step-brothers, Kevin Lee Brittain, and Toby Brittain; grandmother, Evelyn Evans and numerous nieces and nephews, and great niece and nephews.

     He is preceded in death by grandparents, Meredith and Mabel Evans, Roland Allen Hurst and Wanda Sue Schaffer.

     Visitation will be held Saturday, Jan. 14, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Cason Monk-Metcalf. Pallbearers will be Ron Dietz, Laremy Evans, Kevin Brittain, Rushton Graves, Jefferson Evans ll and Bruce Childers.

Man arrested after robbery

     Officers responded to the call in the 300 block of North Street at 2:43 PM yesterday. Officers learned that the victim, a 71 year old man, was sitting on the sidewalk when he was approached by a suspect who attempted to remove his wallet from his pocket by force. A citizen witnessed the incident and the suspect fled on foot northbound on North Street. a short time later, officers were able to locate the suspect and arrest him behind a business in the 600 block of North Street. The suspect, identified as Steve Woolf, age 53 of Nacogdoches was arrested and charged with Aggravated Robbery. He is in the Nacogdoches County Jail. The victim did not require medical treatment. No weapons were used in the incident.

SFA invites public to guest piano recital and international piano competition

    Internationally acclaimed pianist Barry Snyder will kick off the 2012 Schmidbauer International Young Artist Piano Competition with a solo recital at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 20, in Cole Concert Hall on the Stephen F. Austin State University campus.

World-renowned pianist Barry Snyder will present a guest piano recital at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 20, in Cole Concert Hall as a prelude to the Stephen F. Austin State University School of Music’s 2012 Schmidbauer International Young Artists Piano Competition on Jan. 21 and 22.

    Since winning three major prizes at the 1966 Van Cliburn International Piano Competition, Snyder has recorded over 40 compact discs and given concerts and master classes around the world. He currently teaches at the Eastman School of Music and will be serving as one of the senior division judges for the Schmidbauer Competition on Saturday, Jan. 21, and Sunday, Jan. 22.

    “Barry’s performance is a wonderful prelude to the SFA School of Music’s annual Schmidbauer Competition,” said Dr. John N. Roberts, director of the school. “The recital also serves as our official dedication for the new Steinway grand piano generously donated by George and Peggy Schmidbauer as our first step to becoming an ‘All-Steinway School.’”

    “We invite all East Texas piano enthusiasts to attend Friday’s performance as well as any or all portions of the competition in which 18 gifted young artists from nine countries will compete for $15,000 in prize money,” Roberts continued.

    From 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 21, senior division pianists (ages 19 to 27) will each present a 30-minute recital during the semi-final rounds in W.M. Turner Auditorium. At the same time, eight junior division semi-finalists (ages 15 to 18) will compete in Cole Concert Hall.

    Three finalists for both divisions will be announced at 4:30 p.m. in Cole Concert Hall, where the junior division final round concert will be held at 7:30 p.m. that evening. The first place winner will receive $1,500; second place, $1,000; and third place, $750.

    The final round for the senior division will be begin at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 22, in Cole Concert Hall. The first place winner will receive $5,000 and a $2,500 concert engagement with the SFA Orchestra of the Pines. Second place will receive $3,000, and third place, $2,000.

    Tickets to Snyder’s recital are $5 for adults, $4 for seniors and $2 for students. Admission to each of the final round concerts is $10 for adults, $8 for seniors and $5 for students. Admission to any part of the semi-final rounds is free.

‘Rastlin’ photographer to speak at Cole Art Center

    David McClister, the artist behind the photograph series “Rastlin – A Southern Survey” currently on view at Stephen F. Austin State University’s The Cole Art Center @ The Old Opera House, will deliver a 5 p.m. gallery talk on Thursday, Jan. 19.

This photograph by David McClister is included in “Rastlin – A Southern Survey,” an exhibition at The Cole Art Center @ The Old Opera House in downtown Nacogdoches. The show, which documents small town wrestling in the South, will close on Saturday, Jan. 21. McClister’s gallery talk at 5 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 19, will be followed by a 6 to 8 p.m. reception.

    “We invite everyone who has already viewed the exhibition and those who have not yet seen it to come hear David and to stay for the reception immediately afterwards,” said Charlene Rathburn, SFA galleries director.

    McClister is a Nashville-based photographer and music video director who specializes in documentary, photojournalism and celebrity portraiture. The “Rastlin” series documents small town wrestling in the South.

    “There was something about this world—the sounds, the smells, the fans—the action inside and outside the ring—everything about it—fascinated me,” wrote McClister in his artist statement for the exhibition.

    The photos will be included in a book of the same title being released by the SFA University Press later this spring.

    “Rastlin – A Southern Survey” is a joint presentation of the SFA College of Fine Arts and School of Art. It is sponsored in part by the SFA Friends of the Visual Arts and Nacogdoches Junior Forum. The exhibition will close on Saturday, Jan. 21.

    The Cole Art Center is located at 329 E. Main St. Regular gallery hours are 12:30 to 5 p.m., Tuesday through Friday, and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday. Admission is free. For more information, please call (936) 468-1131.

Obituary: Maurice Whitton Cecil 1914 – 2012

     Mrs. Wilma Maurice (Whitton) Cecil, age 97, of Nacogdoches, Texas, passed away Monday, Jan. 9, 2012, at a local nursing home.

     Mrs. Cecil was born June 8, 1914, in Swift, Texas, as a daughter of the late Lewis Alexander Whitton and Mary Elmira (Ward) Whitton. She was a retired from the faculty of Stephen F. Austin State University as an English professor.

     She is survived by her son, Anthony Clay Cecil Jr.

     A memorial service will be held at a later date.

     Mrs. Vickie Lucille Oliver, age 63, of Nacogdoches, Texas, passed away Sunday, January 8, 2012.

     Mrs. Oliver was born October 17, 1948, in Dallas, Texas, and had lived in Nacogdoches County, Texas, for several years. She was a former longtime resident of El Paso.

     She is survived by her husband, Dwayne Oliver of Nacogdoches, Texas; daughters, Katlyn Oliver of Nacogdoches, Texas, and Rebecca Prock of Boise, Idaho; daughter-in-law, Misty Olfers of Sherman, Texas; grandchildren, Kourtney Olfers, Brock Olfers, and D.J. Olfers, all of Sherman, Texas; a sister, Debbie Pavloff of Sherman, Texas; and a brother, John Bennett of Florida.

     She was preceded in death by a son, David Bryce Olfers; her father, John Bennett; and her mother, Peggy Bennett.

     A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, January 11, at Cason Monk-Metcalf Sunset Chapel, located at 5400 North Street in Nacogdoches, Texas.
