SFA plans The BIG Event to help residents

Need help painting a shed, washing windows or cleaning up the garden? Stephen F. Austin State University students are inviting Nacogdoches-area residents to request help with these and other chores as part of The BIG Event.

The fourth annual day of service will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, March 24. Residents, businesses and non-profit organizations are encouraged to submit job request forms to The BIG Event planning committee. Requested projects should take approximately three to four hours to complete.

Job request forms are available online at www.sfasu.edu/thebigevent. Forms are due by midnight Friday, Feb. 24, and no job requests will be taken over the phone. All potential job sites will be visited by members of The BIG Event planning committee for assessment. Applicants will be notified of whether their jobs have been accepted by March 9.

“The BIG Event is a great way for students to interact with the community,” said Jamie Bouldin, SFA assistant director for leadership and service. “It is a unique way for students to participate in community service here at SFA.”

The planning committee invites project requests from anyone who could use a couple of extra hands for an afternoon, no matter their income level, she said. Requestors will be asked about the availability of supplies, as SFA is limited on the amount of job materials it can provide.

“Unfortunately, due to budget constraints as well as the consideration of safety for our students, we cannot accept all jobs,” Bouldin said.

For more information on The BIG Event, visit www.sfasu.edu/thebigevent or contact Bouldin at (936)468.1088 or jfbouldin@sfasu.edu.

CITY RECEIVES APPROVAL FOR REDISTRICTING OF CITY COUNCIL WARDS

The City of Nacogdoches has received approval from the U.S. Department of Justice for redistricting of its single-member wards.

“Bojorquez Law Firm, PLLC out of Austin, consultants for the redistricting project, has notified the City of Nacogdoches that preclearance has been received from the U.S. Department of Justice who does not interpose any objection to the change in single member districts.” stated City Manager Jim Jeffers.

On October, 2011 the City Council adopted a redistricting plan that has a deviation of 9.63% from the “ideal” voting district for each of the four city council wards, which is below the acceptable 10% deviation.

“The 2010 Census indicated the City of Nacogdoches single-member wards were out of balance. The NE and NW Wards were over-populated, and the SE and SW Wards were under-populated. The changes to the ward lines will insure a more balanced voting ward based on population, race and better balance in the neighborhoods”, said Jeffers.

The new ward lines are effective immediately and will be used to determine voting districts in the May 2012 city council election.
Redistricting maps and information may also be found on the City’s website at www.ci.nacogdoches.tx.us or by calling the City Secretary at 559-2504.
