Faculty recitals slated at SFA

As part of the Cole Performing Arts Series, the Stephen F. Austin State University School of Music will present two faculty recitals this week, both at 7:30 p.m. in Cole Concert Hall.

Trombonist Deb Scott and pianist Ron Petti will perform on Monday, Jan. 30, and the Alazan Trio—composed of violinist Jennifer Dalmas, cellist Evgeni Raychev and Petti—will perform on Thursday, Feb. 2.

Scott said her varied program includes a concerto “full of emotion, suspense and beautiful melodies by Nino Rota, who is most famous for composing the music for ‘The Godfather,’ and Michael Davis’ ‘Bone Man Walking,’ an unaccompanied solo in the jazz style, which is very enjoyable to hear.”

In addition to teaching trombone and bass trombone at SFA, Associate Professor Scott also directs The Swingin’ Aces jazz band and the Trombone Choir, which was featured at the Big 12 Trombone Conference held earlier this month in Lubbock. Scott is active as a performer and clinician in both classical and jazz styles.

The Alazan Trio has titled its recital “Contrasts” to reflect the differences in the program’s three pieces by Alec Wilder, Ellen Taaffe Zwilich and Rick Sowash, explained Petti.

“Wilder’s trio has five short movements with hints of jazz influence. In stark contrast, the Zwilich trio’s outer movements are intense and rhythmically driven, and the middle is dark and somber,” Petti said. “Sowash’s ‘Four Seasons in Bellville’ is beloved by most audiences and full of lush, expansive melody, sometimes playful, heroic, elegant and even heartrending.”

Tickets for both recitals are $5 for adults, $4 for seniors and $2 for students. For tickets or more information, please visit www.finearts.sfasu.edu or call (936) 468-6407 or (888) 240-ARTS.

Cole Concert Hall is located in the Wright Music Building, 2210 Alumni Drive.
