Acclaimed Celtic fiddlers, dancers to perform at SFA

“Brilliant,” “virtuoso” and “sensational” are just a few of the adjectives critics and colleagues use to describe the performances of The StepCrew, a company of six dancers/musicians with a five-piece band and vocalist who bring together three dance forms — Irish step, traditional tap and Ottawa Valley step dancing.

The StepCrew, with its fusion of Irish step, traditional tap and the loose-limbed Ottawa Valley step dancing, will present its Celtic-inspired show in W.M. Turner Auditorium at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, March 22, as part of the Stephen F. Austin State University College of Fine Arts’ University Series.

The group will present its Celtic-inspired show at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, March 22, in W.M. Auditorium as part of the Stephen F. Austin State University College of Fine Arts’ University Series.

“The StepCrew is a brilliant visual and musical display of the most talented dancers I’ve seen,” said Paddy Moloney, founder and member of the six-time Grammy Award winning Irish band The Chieftains. “(They do) not simply draw their audience in, they take them by the hand and remind us what dance is meant to be about — fun.”

And Moloney speaks from first-hand knowledge; three members of The StepCrew have performed with The Chieftains for over a decade.

Jean Butler, former dance star of “Riverdance” and “Dancing on Dangerous Ground,” echoes Moloney’s praise: “The focus, energy and sheer virtuosity on display from the entire cast is nothing short of mind-boggling.”

“Don’t miss this fantastic show!” exclaimed Dr. John W. Goodall, associate dean of the SFA College of Fine Arts. “You’ll be absolutely amazed by the talent and infectious energy emanating from the stage.”

Prior to the performance, Elizabeth Rhodes, SFA professor of kinesiology and co-director of the SFA dance program, will give an informative talk at 7 p.m, in Griffith Gallery, across the hall from Turner Auditorium. The audience is invited back to the gallery for a post-performance reception to meet the cast and honor the event’s corporate sponsor, BancorpSouth of Nacogdoches.

Turner Auditorium and Griffith Gallery are located in the Griffith Fine Arts Building, 2222 Alumni Drive.

Tickets range from $35 to $17.50, with discounts available for seniors, students and youth. For tickets or more information, please go to www.finearts.sfasu.edu anytime or call (936) 468-6407 or (888) 240-ARTS during business hours after the university’s spring break (March 12 through 16).

David will be remembered as a wonderful son and a loving, supportive dad. His daughter, Susan remarks, “David Lee Roberts, was a big man, a great big one . He loved his girls, different though they are. His pride in his family was never-ending. including his devoted ex-wife. He has ridden on his Honda all across America trying to find a place where he belonged, but he always returned to East Texas. It was the trees, forever green under all circumstances. David was like an evergreen, full of life til the end. His biggest weakness was peanut butter, turning his daughter into a peanut butter Nazi for his own good, (hiding it in her room). Dave’s greatest loves were women; his wife, his daughters, his mother, the sister he had for a few weeks, and all of the unique women he’s held, kissed, and loved. His talents were endless, singing, drawing, sculpting, wrestling, acting , building, writing, and yet he could not dance. He was too many things to say but every chance he got he he would tell you a story. And he never forgot to tell you he loved you. He had a deep love for the water. He loved ships, sailboats, history and pirates. He was a Corporal in the United States Marine Corps and proudly served our country from 1965 to 1969 during the Vietnam Conflict. He earned the Purple Heart Medal and the unfailing respect of his comrades and family. He was an expert marksman in the Marines and volunteered for two additional tours, expressing that he felt that his mission was not complete. He was a man who put others first in his life every day. He loved to cook, fish, take road trips, and make his daughters feel important. He was always proud of his children and grandchildren. He loved art, particular sculpture, and making special things for his daughters. He will be greatly missed by those who knew him best.

He is preceded in death by his father Morris Leman Roberts. He is survived by his daughters, Bonnie Anne Roberts of Corpus Christie and Susan Alexandra Roberts of Nacogdoches; and their mother, Mary Corbett of Nacogdoches; grandchildren, Henry, Xander, Maxwell, Brooke; mother, Mary Ella Johnston and husband Johnny of Alabama; brother, John Roberts and wife Linda of Canyon, Texas and many nieces and nephews and dear friends.

Weaver Street Dedication Set

Arthur Weaver helped found the Nacogdoches Chapter of NAACP, organized the Nacogdoches County Voter’s League and the Nacogdoches County Community Foundation. Mr. Weaver’s homestead is located on the corner of Martin Luther King Drive, and Lucas Street. Recently a request was made to rename Lucas Street in honor of Mr. Weaver. The request was submitted to the recently formed “Naming Committee.” The committee’s recommendation was heard and approved by the Nacogdoches City Council last month. “It is our privilege to be able to honor Mr. Weaver and his accomplishments in this way,” said Mayor Roger Van Horn.

Arthur Weaver Street will officially be dedicated on Thursday, March 15th at 2:30 p.m. at the corner of Martin Luther King Drive and Lucas Street. The entire community is invited to join us as we officially change Lucas Street in honor of Mr. Weaver. Mr. Weaver’s accomplishments in Nacogdoches helped and continue to help countless individuals. Mr. Weaver once said “It’s not the good things you do in life for yourself that count. It’s the good things you do in life for others that count.”

Other requests can be made to the City of Nacogdoches Naming Committee by contacting the City Manager’s office at 936-559-2502 for a list of guidelines. For questions on the renaming of Lucas Street to Arthur Weaver Street please contact Jan Pigg at 936-559-2502.

Norman’s Nacogdoches, March 13

Written by Norman Johnson, contributing writer

I read with a bit of interest and a whole lot of fear and trepidation an article in yesterday’s paper (I don’t have to tell you which one). It dealt with a subject that all of us have been concerned about…grocery bags.

The Austin city commission has passed a ban that will require grocery stores, like it or not, to stop putting groceries in plastic or paper bags. The store cannot, by law, provide you anything to put your groceries in.

Many years ago, during the hey day of that city, it developed a reputation for being “weird.” The town had a reputation for things such as a beautiful nude bathing area on lake Travis owned and maintained by Travis County. Tourists flocked to it. Austin City Limits developed a reputation for weird music performed by a bunch of hippies with long hair.

Guess what? It is now the longest running show in television history. And, o’my gosh I now notice that some of those weird bands are now brought in to perform in our dear city. Have you listened to the lyrics of some of these songs?

They are scarier than that old gospel song “He will set your fields on Fire.” But I digress which is not unusual.

Back to the subject at hand, grocery bags. If you’ll notice lately, the grocery stores have these tiny cloth bags (decorator bags) for sale to put your groceries in. I think that’s what this is all about—selling those bags. And the tree huggers just love it. It takes several decorator bags to put all your groceries in. Bag sacking at one time was something of an art.

The young people who performed these tasks with lightning speed, while juggling other items, behind their back. It’s true. My wife, Lill, and her brother, the late Bubba Mayes used to do this very thing at the old Piggly Wiggly.

Perhaps tourists might rush into Nac to watch the clerks juggle Antiques behind their backs. We have plenty of those—lovely things.

Remember when laws were passed to keep men from expectorating on the sidewalks? We just recently passed a law to keep folks from smoking within so many feet from a business. I see people breaking thatlaw constantly. Perhaps NAPD could provide us with numbers as to how many tickets have been issued for that offense.

The big city tree huggers have arrived in our fair city and we must learn to cooperate with some of their weird ideas. Let’s do a little plagiererism. Perhaps our CVB could adopt a new bumper sticker, “Help keep Nacogdoches weird.”

I’m not worried. City Manager Jim Jeffers is going to watch the Austin law with interest. Now anything that can spark ole Jim’s interest can’t be all bad.

Local violinist named concertmaster of All-State Orchestra

Payton Andrews, son of Reese and Carolyn Andrews of Nacogdoches, recently performed as concertmaster, or first chair violin, of the All-State Philharmonic Orchestra at the Texas Music Educators Convention in San Antonio.

Violinist Payton Andrews, son of Reese and Carolyn Andrews and a student in the SFA Music Preparatory Division, recently performed in the All-State Philharmonic Orchestra as concertmaster.

This is the third year for Andrews to have been chosen as one of only 112 violin students in the state to perform in one of the three All-State Orchestras, but this is the first year he has been selected as a concertmaster.

“This is a very exciting accomplishment for Payton,” exclaimed Dr. Jennifer Dalmas, SFA professor of violin and Andrews’ instructor. “It’s an honor to win the top chair of any orchestra; to do so at the All-State level is really extraordinary!”

Andrews has been enrolled in the Stephen F. Austin State University Music Preparatory Division since 2000 when he began studying Suzuki violin with Brenda Josephsen. Dalmas has been his instructor since 2005.

For six consecutive years, Dalmas’ students from the Music Preparatory Division have been named to an All-State Orchestra. Laura Nicholson of Tyler performed with this year’s Symphony Orchestra, Payton’s brother Parker earned spots in the 2007, 2008 and 2009 orchestras, and Jason Williams of Lufkin also performed in 2009.

This year’s All-State musicians have each received further recognition. Andrews recently competed in Dallas as a semi-finalist in the Juanita Miller competition, and Nicholson performed the first movement of the Mendelssohn concerto in Tyler with the Tyler Youth Orchestra.

“Our string players in the Prep Division are distinguishing themselves all across Texas!” Dalmas said.

The SFA Music Preparatory Division offers group and private lessons in Suzuki violin or viola for ages 3 and up and private instruction in traditional violin, viola and cello for ages 7 and up, including adults.

For information on the string program or any other musical instructions offered through the SFA Music Preparatory Division, visit www.music.sfasu.edu/prep, e-mail Pat Barnett, division director, at pbarnett@sfasu.edu or call her at (936) 468-1291.
