Obituary: Thelma (Goolsby) Mathis

     Graveside service for Thelma (Goolsby) Mathis, 92, of Timpson, TX, will be held at 11:00 AM, Saturday, February 18, 2012, in Woodlawn Cemetery, Timpson, with Rev. Dock Lazarine officiating.

     Visitation will be 5:00 – 7:30 PM, Friday, February 17, 2012, at Taylor Funeral Home, Timpson.

     Mrs. Mathis passed away Wednesday, February 15, 2012, in Nacogdoches, TX.

     Born January 21, 1920, in Timpson, Thelma Mathis was the daughter of the late Susie (Childs) and Lloyd Benjamin Goolsby. She was a graduate of Timpson High School and beauty college. Thelma and John Mathis were married November 26, 1937, in Timpson. She was a beautician in Timpson for many years and was a member of First Baptist Church, Timpson.

     Survivors include her son Steve Mathis and wife Judy of Clayton, TX; daughter Martha Holt and husband Roger of Nacogdoches; brothers Ben Goolsby and wife Claudia of Timpson and J. B. Goolsby and wife Dixie of Bryan, TX; sister Nora Goolsby Rice of Allentown, PA; grandchildren: Keith Frazier, Stacy Mathis, and Kelley Dickens; and great grandchildren Laci and Blake Dickens.

     In addition to her parents, Thelma Mathis was preceded in death by husband John Mathis and twin sister Selma M. Cowan.

CITY COUNCIL CALLS REGULAR ELECTION

     At their regular meeting February 7 the City Council called the regular election for Council members for Saturday, May 12, 2012 at Thomas J. Rusk Elementary School, 411 N. Mound. The election will determine the position of City Council member for the Southwest Ward and Southeast Ward. According to City Secretary Lila Fuller, applications to file for a place on the ballot will be accepted during regular business hours through March 5. “To run for City Council you must: 1) be at least 18 years old; 2) be a resident of the city for six (6) months preceding the date of the election in the district you are running; 3) have the eligibility of a registered voter of the city; 4) not hold any other public office for which you receive compensation; 5) not be indebted to the city; 6) not have been determined mentally incompetent by a final judgment of a court; and 7) not have been finally convicted of a felony from which you have not been pardoned or otherwise released from the resulting disabilities” Fuller stated. “We have candidate packets available in our office and on our website for anyone interested in running for a city council position”.

Nacogdoches Jaycees presents Bowl for Kids

Bowl for Kids is a local fund-raiser put on by the Nacogdoches Jaycees to raise money for local kid organizations including Nacogdoches County Steer Show, Nacogdoches County Boys and Girl Scouts, Pineywoods Youth Football, and many more. Teams of 4 individuals can sign up to bowl at 10am, 12 noon, and 2pm. The score doesn’t matter, the event is meant for people to come enjoy bowling, food, and win prizes. SFA to host Showcase Saturdays for prospective students

    Future college students will have the opportunity to experience a taste of campus life during two free, action-packed open-house Saturdays at Stephen F. Austin State University in Nacogdoches on Feb. 25 and March 31.

    Prospective students will get to visit with university faculty and staff, tour the campus and residence halls, and preview academic programs during the two SFA Showcase Saturday events.

    “There is no better time than Showcase Saturday to visit the beautiful SFA campus and enjoy the Lumberjack Experience,” said Ryan Horne, assistant director of the Office of Admissions.

    “Guests are encouraged to visit one-on-one with our faculty to learn more about our quality, personalized academic programs, and our staff will be available to answer questions about everything from admission requirements to financial aid to residence life.”

    SFA is a comprehensive, residential university located in the heart of Texas Forest Country in Nacogdoches. Nearly 13,000 students attend SFA, which is within a few hours’ drive of Texas’ major metropolitan areas.

    Showcase Saturday event registration will begin at noon on the first floor of the Baker Pattillo Student Center and will remain open until 1 p.m. Each person who registers will receive an information packet. The opening program begins at 1 p.m. and will provide an overview of the day’s events.

    Guests will then be able to visit with representatives of the academic departments until 4 p.m. at the Academic Fair in the Student Recreation Center. Student service department representatives also will be on hand to provide information about campus life from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. in the Student Center.

    Campus and residence hall tours will begin at 1:45 p.m. and continue until 5 p.m. Campus tours will take students on a guided walk of the SFA campus, while the residence hall tour will showcase several halls on both the north and south ends of campus.

    Admissions counselors will be available to discuss admission procedures and requirements in the Rusk Building, Room 206, from 1:45 to 5 p.m.

    Financial aid information sessions will be held at 2:30, 3:15 and 4 p.m. in the Kennedy Auditorium, Room 101. Residence Life information sessions will be held at 2:30, 3:15 and 4 p.m. in the Baker Pattillo Student Center movie theater on the second floor.

    Participating students will receive a free SFA T-shirt after turning in a completed evaluation form in the Grand Ballroom of the student center from 4 to 5 p.m.

February 16: NPD Crime Report

This is a complete list of reports responded to by the Nacogdoches Police Department

p12-02633, Robbery- This occurred at Save a Lot Foods. The suspect, described only as a middle aged black male, was observed stuffing packages of meat in his clothing. While exiting, a female store employee attempted to stop the suspect when he pushed the employee into a metal door jam. The suspect fled southerly from the store on foot. No serious injuries were reported in the incident and it remains under investigation at this time.
