Constable Office Precinct 4 and the NPD arrest two for Burglary of a Building

     The Nacogdoches County Constable Office Precinct 4 and the Nacogdoches Police Department stopped a burglary in progress last night around 11:00 pm in the city of Nacogdoches. Two men from Nacogdoches were caught inside a building in the process of stealing copper.

Walker

     Constable Jason Bridges stated that his office has been working an ongoing investigation into copper thefts for the last six months. We have seen a sharp increase in the last year of copper theft crimes, due to the value of copper and metal. Bridges stated that we have identified several groups in Nacogdoches County that we believe are engaging in unlawful activity to steal copper.

Driver

     Constable Bridges stated that the course of this investigation lead officers to gain information of a building that was going to be burglarized on hunter street in the city of Nacogdoches. The Constable Office identified both subjects and started conducting surveillance.

     The Constable Office was joined by the Nacogdoches Police Department Thursday night in a joint effort to apprehend the suspects. Around 11:00 pm both agencies observed two suspects enter into a building on hunter road without consent of the owner. Officers went into the building a short time later and found the suspects in the act of stealing copper from the building.

     David Driver 19 years of age and Joshua Walker 21 years of age both from Nacogdoches Texas were arrested and charged with Burglary of a Building State Jail Felony. Both Subjects were transported to the Nacogdoches County Jail.

Fresh Strawberries available this Saturday

     George Millard will have fresh strawberries from his farm this Saturday morning. Supplies are limited!

     Things to look for: baked goods (breads, cakes, mini cheesecakes, cookies, fried pies & pies), candles, canned goods (wild-picked jams & jellies including may haw, blackberry, blueberry, muscatine and wild plum as well as jams, marmalades, preserves, chow-chow, pickled vegetables, salsas & relishes), ceramics, artisan Texas cheeses, freshly ground organic corn meal and whole wheat flour, free-range eggs, herbs (basil, coriander, mint, oregano, parsley, rosemary & thyme), dried herbs, local raw honey, jewelry, plants (house plants, bedding plants, fruit trees, trees & whips), smoothies, soaps (lye and herbal), ribboncane syrup, tamales, vinegars and fruit wines. LOCAL PRODUCE: arugula, asparagus, frozen shelled beans (butter, baby Lima & pinto), beets, broccoli, cabbages, carrots, greens (arugula, beet, collard, kale, mustard, spinach, Swiss chard & turnip), kohlrabi, mixed lettuce, frozen okra, onions, frozen shelled peas (black eye, brown Crowder & zipper cream), pecans (cracked, shelled & unshelled), new potatoes, radishes, squash (acorn, banana, butternut, kushaw & spaghetti), strawberries, sweet potatoes & turnips.

Relay For Life Nacogdoches County Hosts Survivor Dinner

     Relay For Life Nacogdoches County is hosting a Survivor Dinner on Tuesday, March 20, 2012 at the North Street Church of Christ’s Family Life Center. At this event, which celebrates cancer survivors and their caregivers, participants will enjoy a fajita dinner catered by the Nacogdoches Jaycees and served by the members of The Yellow House and the Relay For Life Nacogdoches County committee members. The Survivor Dinner will begin at 5:30 p.m. and is complimentary to survivors and one caregiver. Survivors and caregivers will receive t-shirts during the Survivor Dinner to wear at the Relay For Life Celebration on Friday and Saturday, March 30-31. Cancer survivors make a lap around the Nacogdoches Expo Center at last year's Relay For Life Nacogdoches County. Survivors are encouraged to participate in the Survivor Dinner on Tuesday, March 20 as well as the Relay For Life Celebration March 30-31.

     “Having the Survivor Dinner earlier is a new change to this year’s Relay For Life. Our goal is to have 125 survivors at this year’s dinner and at the Relay For Life Celebration,” said Head.

     Relay For Life is the American Cancer Society’s signature fundraising event. Each year, more than 3.5 million people in communities across the United States and around the world, gather to take part in their local Relay for Life event. Each event is different, but all contain elements that help participants celebrate, remember and fight back. The Survivor Dinner is part of a larger Relay For Life event that takes place during March 30-31 at the Nacogdoches County Expo Center.

‘Pen, Pigment & Metal’ exhibition features SFA art and fiction

    A collaborative project between Stephen F. Austin State University student writers and artists will culminate in the opening of “Pen, Pigment & Metal: Collaborate” at 6 p.m. Wednesday, March 21, in Griffith Gallery, located in Griffith Fine Arts Building, Room 208.

    For the project, fiction-writing students, under the direction of Assistant Professor Andrew Brininstool, wrote short stories that the art metal/jewelry students, directed by Assistant Professor Lauren B. Selden, responded to by creating three-dimensional works of art.

    At the same time, printmaking Assistant Professor Neal Cox directed his bookmaking class to create works that were then transferred to the fiction writing class, where students created a second story inspired by those works of art.

    This is the fourth year that art and English students have collaborated on an exhibition, but this is the first time that two art classes are involved simultaneously, said Seldon.

    The exhibition, which is a joint presentation of the SFA College of Fine Arts, School of Art and the Creative Writing Program within the Department of English, will run through Friday, April 20. It is sponsored in part by Nacogdoches Junior Forum and the SFA Friends of the Visual Arts.

“I Found it in the Archives” contest winner announced

    A Chireno school teacher is the winner of the East Texas Research Center’s “I Found it in the Archives” contest.

    Jacy King’s winning video entry about a 1906 shooting in downtown Nacogdoches earned her a prize pack from local businesses and the chance to compete nationally. The “I Found it in the Archives” contest is a national event sponsored annually by the Society of American Archivists. Archives around the country hold regional contests, asking their patrons, “What did you find in our archives?”

    This year, the ETRC at Stephen F. Austin State University had its biggest response yet from patrons and received several intriguing entries, said Linda Reynolds, director of the ETRC.

    “Some of the stories were the retelling of family mysteries; some were about finding long lost ancestors, while others were about learning from the past,” Reynolds said. “The common thread in all of these entries was the unimaginable treasure trove of historical documents located in the ETRC that hold the answers to long-asked questions.”

    King submitted a two-minute video about her great-grandfather’s cousin, Dock Watson, who was a lawman in Nacogdoches in 1906. While on patrol one night, he shot an unarmed man that he thought was going to harm him. He turned himself in and served four years in prison. King searched through the documents in the ETRC to find out exactly where the shooting took place. She learned that the shooting happened at the Perkins, Kleas & Mast Mercantile Store located on the square at the site of the original Old Stone Fort and where Commercial Bank of Texas now stands.

SFA to present ‘Mozart Flute Quartets’

    Christina Guenther, Stephen F. Austin State University associate professor of flute, and three of her colleagues will present a recital of W.A. Mozart’s four flute quartets at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 20, in Cole Concert Hall on the SFA campus.

    Joining Guenther will be violinist Jennifer Dalmas, SFA associate professor of violin; violist Melissa Nabb, instructor for the SFA Music Preparatory Division; and cellist Evgeni Raychev, SFA adjunct faculty.

    “The instrumentation for these pieces is that of a string quartet, with the flute in place of the first violin. The ensemble was particularly popular in the middle of the second half of the 18th century and then declined in popularity in favor of the string quartet,” Guenther explained. “Mozart’s brilliant Classical writing comes through in each of these pieces.”

    The recital is a part of the SFA School of Music’s Cole Performing Arts Series. Cole Concert Hall is located in the Wright Music Building, 2210 Alumni Drive.

Cantare to perform

Cantare, a six-member select group from the Soldiers’ Chorus of the United States Army Field Band, will present a free concert of opera scenes at 3 p.m. Monday, March 19, in Cole Concert Hall, located in the Wright Music Building on the Stephen F. Austin State University campus. The ensemble will perform scenes from operas such as “The Barber of Seville,” “Magic Flute,” “Carmen” and “Madame Butterfly.” The one-hour program also includes a question and answer period. The public is welcome to attend.
