     Agriculture Commissioner Todd Staples will be the keynote speaker at the Texas Forest Country’s annual luncheon meeting set for Monday, May 21 in the Twilight Ballroom of the BakerPattilloStudentCenter on the campus of StephenF.AustinStateUniversity.

     The event, during which the annual Silver Bucket is awarded to a hard working East Texan, will provide a wealth of information about business and the economy of East Texas.

     During his keynote address, Staples will discuss the recent historical drought, a new statewide water conservation initiative and tools to enhance economic growth across Texas.

     Staples has chaired the Senate Transportation and Homeland Security Committees. According to his bio, he is “committed to charting a course that will bring job creation to rural Texas, further the promotion of Texas products around the world, and help farmers and ranchers prepare for tomorrow’s challenges.” The commissioner is in his second term and continues to promote economic opportunities, youth development, healthy lifestyles and consumer protection.

     Pam Phelps, Chairman of the Texas Forest Country Partnership, said the annual meeting brings together people from all over East Texas and provides the opportunity to not only network but to hear what is going on with our neighbors in adjoining counties.

     “This event is great for community and business leaders, elected officials, those in higher education and workforce training as well as chambers of commerce officials and economic development board members,” said Phelps.

     “This is a chance to ask questions, get involved and help make a difference for East Texas. That is what this partnership is all about — creating opportunities and growing East Texas,” Phelps said. “Our board and member counties work hard every day to ensure our part of this great state remains a viable and grand place to live and raise a family.”

     The Silver Bucket, sponsored by First Bank & Trust East Texas, is one of the highlights of the luncheon. It is given to a person who has given of themselves — “toted a lot of water” strictly for the betterment of East Texas.

     Individual luncheon tickets are $25 and a table sponsorship is $250, and seats up to eight people. The partnership counties are: Angelina, Houston, Jasper, Nacogdoches, Newton, Panola, Polk, Sabine, San Augustine, San Jacinto, Shelby, Trinity and Tyler.
