Herrington: The Evolution of the Breakdown

I believe in the free market of ideas. We need open discussions, because in the open market, everyone has a turn at the wheel and everyone has a conflict of interest, both republicans and democrats. If there is anything that is unclear and yet super-clear all at the same time it is that the media, which is owned and operated as neutral but which we all know is anything but, has at all times an ax to grind. It sells not only junk for venders but ideas for its owners. We are facing an impenetrable wall of propaganda coming from every side and it is really difficult to see how to ferret out what is being said. I can take every side all at once and both from the middle.
The rich do not want to pay taxes and want to off load any costs they have with employees, and the employees want to be paid a higher slice of the pie to begin with in order to be able to afford those expense of increasing costs of insurance, medical, and technological advancements. To deny the raises and simultaneously to diminish welfare and unemployment support only works to create more Occupy Movements. Why would the rich care, and why won’t those who end up joining the poor? It is a numbers game in the open market. Market share is all this is about in the world of political ideas.
These are all free market ideas that are up for sale. The question is, “How will the rich continue to talk the poor into voting for them as they continue to disenfranchise more and more people?” The law of diminishing returns herein is when they finally prove Marx right and the only way for the employees to get any real and fair share of the value they help to create is for them to forcefully take it back, which is ironic since it has been held back from them by force of the laws that were created or regulations that were not put into place in the first place or were deregulated in order to slant the access to those who already had a head start.
Thus the accusation that no laws have been broken on behalf of the rich, by which I mean those who have used the law to cover their tracks, and the poor, who may have been protected at some time in the past but now through deregulation are literally left holding the bag and the costs of everything. An honest wage for an honest day’s work is as slogan that modern businesses do not believe they can uphold. And they sleep great at night. A person who works a 70 hour week and only makes $350 a week take home pay is in fact only surviving on $2.08 an hour for the entire week: food, shelter, clothing, medical, and relationships. Production is up and wages are down relative to profits. Why not simply bring back slavery and at least be honest about it? Swift be damned; there is no need for satire since we’ve run out of a need for humor altogether.
Many times, what is forgotten is that those in power have already been in power and have used their influence to gain even greater power, control, access, and say so. As more and more people are impoverished, the vote has to be worth less and less until finally, as a republic only, those who own enough to vote can vote, and this is another conflict of interest. Democracy has become a burden to the rich, along with collective bargaining, protesting, and capital gains taxes. Where are they headed? The Queen of England owns more American soil than any other foreign person. She has over 10,000 diamonds. Essentially, she is the avatar for the collective unconscious of the British, a sort of Paris Hilton on steroids. And this is now what we as Americans want, to be paid for the privilege of having our pictures taken. That’s just how hot we are!
What seems to be missing in the equation is the education of the masses, a feat which was heretofore impossible until the Internet, but which will be remedied quickly. This is the entire reason there is such a rush to control the web and to privatize it as thoroughly as possible, to shut the thing down, ostensibly. The Internet is the most socially conscious and culturally powerful tool ever invented, and it is the singular force presently standing in the way of world political control by the elites.
But what in the world is wrong with the liberals? If education had worked then we would see test scores in the sky, but instead after all of the bussing and equal everything and justice movements and free everything under the sun, we still meet the world with only modest gains and with horrendous deficits to show for it. We seem to have an increase in poverty, an increase in ignorance, and an increase of objectifying behaviors across the board. If the social programs were going to make all the difference, why haven’t they? And we do not seem to be morally ahead, certainly businesses that were to be started and run by those who came from poorer backgrounds have not necessarily kept pace, run a tight ship, or made significant gains.
What would happen if we did allow the elites to own it all, take it all in, and privatize it all? The poor do not seem motivated by their ongoing poverty to get themselves out of it but rather seem to be satisfied with their pittance. If the floor were to drop out, would we not see the real guts of our social fabric come to the foreground? Would not the strong rise up and take control of themselves and so survive the mission of adulthood? Wouldn’t we see humanity in its vast struggle in the survival of the fittest? Praise God, they would evolve! Or die, whatever.

General Information:
The date for the Nacogdoches County Democratic and Republican Runoff Elections is July 31, 2012.
Voters Who Voted In The 2012 Democratic Primary: Registered voters in Nacogdoches County are eligible to vote in the Democratic Runoff Election if they voted in the Democratic Primary Election, or if they did not vote in either of the May 29, 2012 Democratic or Republican Primaries. Voters who voted in the May 29, 2012 Republican Primary are not eligible to vote in the July 31, 2012 Democratic Runoff election. Voters who signed the petition of a Democratic candidate are eligible to vote in the July 31, 2012 Democratic Runoff election. Voters who signed the petition of a Republican candidate, an independent candidate, or a candidate of another political party are not eligible to vote in the July 31, 2012 Democratic Runoff election.
Voters Who Voted In The 2012 Republican Primary: Registered voters in Nacogdoches County are eligible to vote in the Republican Runoff Election if they voted in the Republican Primary Election, or if they did not vote in either of the May 29, 2012 Democratic or Republican Primaries. Voters who voted in the May 29, 2012 Democratic Primary are not eligible to vote in the July 31, 2012 Republican Runoff election. Voters who signed the petition of a Republican candidate are eligible to vote in the July 31, 2012 Republican Runoff election. Information About Literature And Candidates:
Voters can feel free to bring in literature to use in the voting booths that will help them in making their choices. However, voters are not allowed to leave their literature in the voting booths after they have voted. Sample ballots will be posted for voters to examine if they would like before receiving their ballots. Election workers will be happy to assist all voters in helping them understand how to mark their ballots and will be happy to read the ballots to voters as well if they are asked to. However, election workers will not provide any information or insight to voters regarding candidates, so we recommend that voters research the candidates running for office before they come in to vote. The Nacogdoches County Elections Office does not provide any literature or signage for candidates running for office. To find out more about the candidates running for office or to obtain campaign materials, we recommend that you contact the local Democratic and Republican parties. Other Important Information:
The most important date coming up is Monday, July 2, 2012. This is the last day to register to vote for the July 31, 2012 Runoff Elections and all applications must be received (not postmarked) by the Nacogdoches County Elections Office by this date. The Elections Office will be open until 5:00 p.m. on July 2, 2012.
If you have moved recently you need to re-register to vote. Voter registration is connected to your address. If you stay at the same address year after year, then you don’t ever have to re-register because your voter registration is automatically renewed every two years. However, whenever you move you have to re-register or you will eventually be removed from the voter roll. Even if you move within the same county, city, or even on the same street you have to re-register. You also need to re-register if you have made any changes to your mailing address. For example, if you had a PO Box last year, and now you don’t, then you need to re-register/update your address information. Everyone in Nacogdoches County who has registered to vote should have received a yellow and white voter certificate in April of 2012. If you do not receive a yellow and white voter certificate with your current residence and current mailing address by April of 2012, then you may not be registered to vote. Please contact the Elections Office by July 2, 2012 if you are not sure if you are registered to vote and we will gladly help you.
We are now accepting applications for mail ballots. To qualify to vote by mail, you must be 65 years of age or older, or have a disability, or be confined in jail, or be able to provide an address outside of Nacogdoches County if you will not be in Nacogdoches County during voting times. The last day for the Elections Office to accept/receive applications for mail ballots is July 24, 2012. Applications for mail ballots can be hand delivered to the Elections Office until Early Voting begins on July 23, 2012. Once Early Voting begins, the applications have to be mailed to the Elections Office.
First time voters need to bring some form of ID in addition to or instead of their voter registration certificates. All other voters can present either their voter registration certificates or one of the appropriate forms of ID listed: 1. driver license or personal identification card, 2. a form of identification containing the person’s photograph that establishes the persons identity, 3. a birth certificate, 4. United States citizenship papers, 5. United States passport, 6. official mail addressed to the person by name from a government entity, 7. a copy of a current utility bill, bank statement, government check, paycheck, or other government document that shows the name and address of the voter, 8. any form of identification prescribed by the Secretary of State.
No campaign buttons, apparel, hats, or shirts are allowed in the polling place. No exceptions. Voters may bring in literature to the polling place regarding candidates or issues to use in the voting booths, but these materials are not to be left in the voting booths. No campaigning is allowed within 100 feet of a polling place.
Polls are open 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Election Day for all polling locations.
A public waiting area will be open at 7:00 p.m. on Election Night at the Courthouse Annex for the media and voters who want to receive printouts of election results as soon as they are available. Early Voting results will be released around 7:00 p.m. Final results for the elections are estimated to be available between 9:30 p.m. and 10:00 p.m. on Election Night.
I will be conducting a public test on Wednesday, July 25, 2012, at 4:30 p.m. of the electronic voting equipment to be used in the July 31, 2012 Nacogdoches County Runoff Elections. It would be greatly appreciated if the Daily Sentinel would run an article on any aspect of the elections on Monday, July 23, 2012, and would include the following information somewhere in the story:
“A public test of the electronic voting equipment to be used in the July 31, 2012 Nacogdoches County Runoff Elections will take place at 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday, July 25, 2012 in the Elections Office located within the Courthouse Annex Building – 203 W. Main St. – Nacogdoches, TX 75961.”

Obituary: Ronald Paul “Ron” Patton
Mr. Ronald Paul “Ron” Patton, age 70, of Douglass, Texas, passed away Wednesday, July 4, 2012, in Tyler, Texas.
He was born March 18, 1942, in Vincennes, Indiana. Mr. Patton retired as director of dining services at Stephen F. Austin State University in Nacogdoches.
Funeral services are set for 11:30 a.m. Saturday, July 7, at Cason Monk-Metcalf Sunset Chapel, located at 5400 North Street in Nacogdoches, Texas. Interment will be later at Rosehaven Memorial Park in Douglasville, Georgia.
Visitation will be held two hours prior to service at the funeral home.

Obituary: Howard A. “Woody” Wolfson
Memorial service for Howard A. “Woody” Wolfson, 66, of Nacogdoches will be held at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, July 5, 2012, at Cason Monk-Metcalf Sunset Chapel, Nacogdoches, with Rabbi Neal Katz officiating.
Mr. Wolfson passed away June 17, 2012, at The Arbor.
He was born April 11, 1946, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and his parents were Anna Cohen Wolfson and Arthur M. Wolfson, Cantor-Temple Emanu-El, New York City.
Howard was a graduate of Highland Park High School in Jamaica Estates, New York. He later earned a BS from the University of Pittsburgh and a MBA from Stephen F. Austin State University.
He had worked for AMTRAK for many years in both Philadelphia and Washington, D.C., and as Quality Assurance at TXDOT in Austin for his last ten years in the work force. He made many friends here in Nacogdoches and was known as ‘Vladimir’ on Maule in the Morning radio show.
He was preceded in death by his mother and father, and his sister Zelda C. Wolfson.
He was loving brother to his sister Shirley Watterston, and proud uncle of nieces Wendy Barnhill and Shari Ellsworth, and grandnieces Hannah Barnhill, Shayna Ellsworth, and Shae Ellsworth, and grandnephew Jacob Barnhill, all of Nacogdoches. He treasured his beloved dog Jenna.
