The Nacogdoches Farmers’ Market, located at the “hitch lot” at the corner of West Main and Pearl Streets, is open from 8 a.m. until noon or later every Saturday morning. The market is also open on Wednesdays from 3 to 6 p.m. until August 29th. If the market parking lot is full, additional parking is available in the Nacogdoches County Courthouse Annex parking lot.

Living History Day
History will come to life at the Durst-Taylor Historic House and Gardens this Saturday, August 4, 2012. This year marks the start of the bicentennial of the War of 1812. Many Texans don’t know it also marks the start of a bicentennial for us.
In 1812, Anglo and Tejano forces, fighting under a Federalist banner, marched on Spanish Royalist garrisons in Texas and began their attempt to rest Texas away from Spanish rule. During that time, José Bernardo Gutiérrez de Lara and Lieutenant Augustus W. Magee led troops into Nacogdoches as a part of the ill fated Gutierrez-Magee Expedition. Their solid green flag is now one of the nine flags of Nacogdoches.
To kick off the bicentennial, living historians from across the state of Texas will gather in Nacogdoches to recreate the forces under Gutierrez and Magee as they marched into town and began their ill fated expedition. Participants will be dressed in clothing of the period and armed with weapons and accoutrements just as the men they are portraying would have been two hundred years ago.
The Living History Day will start a nine year schedule of events all over the state of Texas commemorating the Gutierrez-Magee Expedition, the Lafitte Brothers Intrigue, the Mina Expedition and the Long Expedition! Nacogdoches will be the stepping off point for this commemorative cycle, as it was for the original event in 1812. It is important to remember this forgotten chapter of our history, and we welcome you to join us as we bring it to life! Visit the Durst-Taylor Historic House and Gardens, located at 304 North Street, this Saturday, August 4, 2012 from 9am to 5pm to take part in the event.

Tickets now on sale for SFA’s 2012 Chamber Music in the Pines Festival
Tickets are now available for the Stephen F. Austin State University School of Music’s 2012 Chamber Music in the Pines Festival, “Musical Directions.” The series of four concerts will be presented Saturday, Aug. 11, through Sunday, Aug. 19.
Internationally acclaimed musicians Baya Kakouberi and Gary Levinson are among the six guest musicians who will be performing with SFA music faculty and students during the SFA School of Music’s 2012 Chamber Music in the Pines Festival, which runs from Saturday, Aug. 11, through Sunday, Aug. 19.
“As the festival’s title indicates, the series of four concerts will feature music from the four “corners” of the globe,” said Jennifer Dalmas, SFA associate professor of violin and the festival’s director.
“Music of the North” will be presented at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 11; “Music of the South” at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 14; “Music of the East” at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Aug. l7; and “Music of the West” at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 19. All concerts will be held in Cole Concert Hall, located in the Wright Music Building, 2210 Alumni Drive on the SFA campus.
Guest musicians for the festival include pianist Gustavo Bianchi, violist Nicholas Jeffery and guitarist Joseph Williams, all of Austin; Dallas concert pianist Baya Kakouberi and violinist Gary Levinson, associate concertmaster of the Dallas Symphony; and marimbist Brian Zator, member of the music faculty at Texas A&M University-Commerce. The SFA Percussion Ensemble will also perform.
SFA music faculty members who will be performing include clarinetist Christopher Ayer (clarinet), Jennifer Dalmas (violin), Jeremy Fain (bassoon), Charles Gavin (horn), John W. Goodall (oboe), Christina Guenther (flute), Scott Harris (percussion) and Evgeni Raychev (cello).
The festival’s opening concert, “Music of the North,” will feature string musicians Levinson, Dalmas, Jeffery and Raychev and Kakouberi (piano) performing “Piano Quartet in C minor” by Swedish composer Franz Adolf Berwald and “String Quartet in G minor, Op. 27” by Norwegian composer Edvard Grieg.
The program for “Music from the South” includes a Spanish piano quartet plus chamber music from Argentina and Italy that features the guitar.
The “Music of the East” concert will feature percussionists and flutist performing music by Minuru Maki and Keiko Abe, among others.
The festival’s closing concert, “Music of the West,” will have strings and woodwinds performing music from the United States and Europe in a variety of ensemble settings.
The SFA Friends of Music will host a closing reception after the final concert. All patrons are invited to attend and meet the musicians.
Season tickets are $30 for adults, $22.50 for seniors and $15 for students. Single event tickets are $10 for adults, $7.50 for seniors and $5 for students.

August Cruise Night hitting the red brick streets again this weekend
The East Texas Classic Car Club will be hosting their first Friday cruise night on the red brick streets of historic downtown Nacogdoches on Friday, August 3, 2012. The cruise will take place from 6 to 8 p.m. on the back side of the Convention Visitor’s Bureau along Pilar Street. Anyone interested in displaying or talking about their vehicles is welcome to attend.
“We invite everyone in the community to come out at take a look at the fantastic collection of classic cars,” said East Texas Classic Car Club member Gary Truchelut. “We are hoping that other people will bring their unique cars down as well.” The Heart of Texas Gift Gallery, located at 110 S. Pecan will be open.
As part of its monthly independent film series, the SFA School of Art will present a free, one-night film screening of “They Call It Myanmar: Lifting the Curtain” at 7 p.m., at The Cole Art Center @ The Old Opera House in downtown Nacogdoches.
The 70-minute documentary, shot clandestinely over a two-year period, gives an intimate look inside the isolated country also known as Burma.

Obituary: David R. (Dave) Barringer
David R. (Dave) Barringer, age 74, went to be with his Savior on Monday, July 30, 2012, in Nacogdoches, Texas, after a battle with cancer. Dave was born October 28, 1937, in Kawkawlin, Michigan to Alvin and Genevieve Barringer. Dave married his college sweetheart, Mary Lou Ann Morley, on October 1, 1960. Dave and Mary Lou lived and raised 3 daughters in Oscoda and Bay City, Michigan before moving to Fort Worth, Texas in 1982.
Dave spent his entire adult career in the automotive parts and distribution business and as owner of two auto parts stores, retiring in 2000 as Director of Marketing from WM Automotive Parts Distributor in Fort Worth. After retirement, Dave and Mary Lou moved to Nacogdoches, Texas, and purchased a large poultry farm where he grew just over one million chickens a year for Pilgrim’s Pride. In 2008 Dave sold the farm. Currently he was enjoying retirement by relaxing and traveling with Mary Lou and as an active member of First Baptist Church Nacogdoches and Treasurer for the Antique Car Club of Nacogdoches.
Dave is survived by his wife, Mary Lou Barringer; his three daughters and their husbands, Cheryl and Tom Christensen, Auburn, MI, Jim and Barbara Dolph, Virginia Beach, VA, and Lynne and Alex Orlov, Lufkin , TX; and eleven grandchildren, Lisa Christensen, Austin, Texas, James and Daniel Christensen, Auburn, MI, Ross and Cole Dolph, Virginia Beach, VA, and Dean, Oksana, Erika, Adam, Lukas and Rafe Orlov, Lufkin, TX; a sister, Ann Timm, Port Huron, MI, his mother-in-law Esther Morley, West Branch, MI; and brother and sister-in-law, Bob and Jan Morley, Les and Lynne Morley and Don Morley, MI.
Dave was preceded in death by his parents, Alvin and Genevieve Barringer from Atlanta, MI; an infant sister, Dora Gene Barringer; his father-in-law, Leslie Morley from West Branch, MI; and his brother-in-law, Rev. Frederick Timm from Port Huron, MI.
Services will be held on Thursday, August 2, 2012, at 4:00 pm at First Baptist Nacogdoches in the Chapel. Visitation will begin at 3:30 pm.
