Acclaimed folkloric dance group to perform on SFA campus

NACOGDOCHES, TEXAS – The internationally acclaimed Ballet Folklórico de México will bring Mexico’s rich cultural heritage to the stage of W.M. Turner Auditorium at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 18, as part of the Stephen F. Austin State University College of Fine Arts’ University Series.

Ballet Folklórico de México will perform at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 18, in W.M. Turner Auditorium on the campus of Stephen F. Austin State University. The performance is part of the SFA College of Fine Arts’ University Series.

A twirling pageantry of rhythm, lively dance steps and brightly colored costumes will delight audiences of all ages when the folkloric dance group takes viewers on a journey through Mexico’s past.

For more than 50 years, the musical and technical perfection, sophisticated wardrobe and original choreographies have created lasting impressions for audiences worldwide, making Ballet Folklórico de México a perfect selection for the 2012-2013 University Series, “Expressions,” according to John Goodall, associate dean of the SFA College of Fine Arts.

“We are pleased to bring this kind of energetic and exciting fine arts entertainment to our area as part of our University Series,” Goodall said. “The audience will enjoy the spirited music, technical perfection, colorful wardrobe and imaginative choreography of this distinctive dance group’s performance.”

Ballet Folklórico de México founder Amalia Hernández, dancer and choreographer, and the ballet group have been distinguished with more than 400 awards recognizing artistic merit, according to information found at www.camimusic.com.

Before the performance, there will be a 7 p.m. informative talk presented by Elizabeth Rhodes, professor of dance in the SFA Department of Health and Kinesiology, in Griffith Gallery, located across the hall from Turner Auditorium. The audience is invited back to the gallery for a post-performance reception to honor the event’s corporate sponsor, Lehmann Eye Center.

SFA concert to feature music of Frank Ticheli

NACOGDOCHES, TEXAS – The SFA Wind Ensemble will present “The Music of Frank Ticheli” at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 16, in W.M. Turner Auditorium on the campus of Stephen F. Austin State University. The event is presented as part of the SFA School of Music’s Concert Series.

The work of acclaimed composer Frank Ticheli will be featured in the SFA Wind Ensemble’s “The Music of Frank Ticheli” at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 16, in W.M. Turner Auditorium on the campus of Stephen F. Austin State University.

The concert will feature acclaimed composer Ticheli as guest conductor and will spotlight clarinetist Armenio Suzano as guest artist on Ticheli’s “Concerto for Clarinet and Wind Ensemble.”

“Frank Ticheli is a vital part of America’s music scene, teaching composition at the University of Southern California while composing music for orchestra, band and choir,” said Fred Allen, SFA director of bands and of the ensemble. “SFA bands have commissioned him twice – in 1991 for his piece ‘Gaian Visions’ and in 1995 for ‘Blue Shades.’”

Ticheli joined the faculty of USC’s Thornton School of Music in 1991 where he currently serves as professor of composition. He has appeared as guest conductor of his music at Carnegie Hall, at many American universities and music festivals, and in cities throughout the world.

Well known for his works for concert band, Ticheli will be on campus for a two-day residency, working with the bands, composition students and music education classes.

Suzano is director of orchestra at Liberty University in Lynchburg, Va. A native of Brazil, Suzano graduated from SFA in 1997. He received a master’s degree in music from Northwestern University and a doctoral degree from the University of Michigan. Since leaving SFA, Suzano has performed widely as a clarinetist, pianist and conductor. He has also composed music and is active in church music.

The featured piece in the ensemble’s concert will be Ticheli’s “Concerto for Clarinet and Wind Ensemble,” which was commissioned by and written for the Swedish-American clarinetist Håkan Rosengren, and premiered by him in 2010. Each of the three movements pays homage to an American composer: George Gershwin, Aaron Copland and Leonard Bernstein. Ticheli will guest conduct the concerto.

The Great Pumpkin Patch Express at the Texas State Railroad throughout October

This October the Texas State Railroad is again hosting PEANUTS™ – The Great Pumpkin Patch Express. Join Snoopy for a train excursion themed after Charles M. Schulz’s classic story “It’s The Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown.” Trains leave from the Texas State Railroad Depot in Rusk on October 6 & 7, 13 &14, 20 & 21, and 27 & 28. Departure times on both Saturdays and Sundays are 11:00 a.m. and 2:30 p.m.
Upon arrival at the depot, guests will be greeted by Snoopy. On board the train there will be a live reading of the classic story. During the layover children will enjoy picking a pumpkin from “The Great Pumpkin Patch” and trick-or-treating at “Trick or Treat Street.” Other activities include a hayride, petting zoo, live musical entertainment, bounce house, games, food vendors and more. Children are encouraged to wear costumes.
Tickets are $20 for children ages 2-11 and $40 for adults in Standard Class seating. A special offer of ‘Buy One Get One Free’ is also available on Standard Class seating. Premium Lone Star Class tickets are $45 for children ages 2-11 and $69 for adults. Children under age two ride free.
A special school day has been scheduled for Thursday, October 25. The train will depart the Rusk Depot at 10:30 a.m. The price for school groups taking advantage of this offer is $10 for students and $20 for adults.

Student takes top honors in the Freedom of Speech Public Service Announcement Competition

Red Oak native Jade Bly, a sophomore mass communication student at Stephen F. Austin State University, took top honors in the Freedom of Speech Public Service Announcement Competition for college mass communication students. In recognition for placing first in the television category, Bly was honored at the Excellence in Journalism, Student Union event at the recent Society of Professional Journalists National Journalism Conference in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. Bly also received a plaque and scholarship from the Broadcast Education Association and the National Association of Broadcasters Education Foundation. She is pictured with her plaque in the SFA Department of Mass Communication’s TV2 Studio.

Blast From The Past Nacogdoches History Fair

With just under two weeks until the fourth annual Blast from the Past Nacogdoches History Fair, the Nacogdoches Historic Sites Department is putting the last minute touches on this family fun event!

This event promises to provide something for every family member. There will be Dutch oven cooking demonstrations, including servings of cobbler given to anyone who is interested in their delicious creations. Old-fashioned string music will be played by the Attoyac Valley String Ensemble, providing the perfect background for those interested in the atlatal demonstration or the mock archaeology dig.

Pre-1840s living historians will also be present throughout the day to give visitors a taste of life in the early 1800s and show how oxen were used on a typical farm. The Stone Fort Museum will also be demonstrating the spinning, weaving and dying demonstration, where everyone can dye their own bookmark to take home. This event will take place on October 13th from 9AM to 2PM at Festival Park. This is a free event that provides an excellent way for the whole community to learn about Nacogdoches history in hands on way.

Nacogdoches resident shares memory book with visitors from London

Nacogdoches resident Ann Phillips shares a memory book about Queen Elizabeth II, which was created by her friend, the late Willie Gramling, a beloved local music teacher. The book includes photos, articles and other mementos from the queen’s reign, and was presented to visitors from London during a recent announcement about the Lumberjack Marching Band’s upcoming trip abroad. The book will accompany the band to London, where SFA students will lead the 2013 New Year’s Day Parade. Downtown classic, vintage car rally and concert

NACOGDOCHES – Downtown Nacogdoches will be buzzing with fun during the first Classic and Vintage Vehicle Rally and Concert featuring the Hot Rod Cadillacs, from 5 to 10 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 13.

“We have been talking about it for more than a year and now it’s finally happening,” event organizer Kim Crisp said. “Cruise on down in your hot rod, classic car, motorcycle, project or anything with wheels for a fun afternoon of cars and music.”

For anyone interested in exhibiting, please be at the Plaza Principal on the downtown square between 2 and 4 p.m. for VIP parking and show status. General public viewing is from 5 to 7 p.m., and the outdoor concert begins at 7 p.m.

“Movie, stage and daytime soap opera star, Brad Maule (Dr. Tony of General Hospital), will also be part of the event entertainment as emcee, and he will play a few tunes from his CD,” Crisp said. “Playing with the Hot Rod Cadillacs is Stephen (Rockin P) Pate one of the top guitar players in the lower 48, and he stars in Texas Picking Party (RFD TV). Band includes bass player and vocals Kenneth Thompson, Mark Swearingen on drums, Indio Calzeda on keys and vocals, Jan Pate with vocals and Alex Leyva playing sax.”

The Hotrod Cadillacs will cover country, rock and cruising songs of the 60s, 70s, 80s and 90s.

According to Crisp event attendees will have the chance to participate in a people’s choice awards for the show cars, with awards presented during concert. A limited number of open seats will be available so all are invited to “bring a lawn chair and enjoy a great evening of classic Cars and music.”

Scare on the Square Vendor deadline fast approaching! Vendors needed for upcoming event

NACOGDOCHES – Organizers of the upcoming 15th annual Scare on the Square are seeking food and non-food vendors, church groups, organizations, and businesses to fill available booths at the popular Halloween event. Slated for Saturday, October 27th, 2012 the family friendly fall festival attracted over 9,000 people to the historic brick streets of downtown Nacogdoches last year.
Vendor applications are available at www.ci.nacogdoches.tx.us, by clicking on city departments and then Main Street. Forms are also available at the Main Street Office, located at 202 E. Pilar Street, room 319 in downtown Nacogdoches. A limited amount of booth space is available, so vendors are encouraged to make reservations early. The deadline to apply for space is October 15th.
