Obituary: Freddie Prickett
Freddie Prickett, 89, of Nacogdoches, passed away at her home on Friday, April 5, 2013.
Mrs. Prickett was born in Nacogdoches, to parents Pete and Dona Martines on November 23, 1923.
Funeral service arrangements are pending at this time and will be announced as soon as the details become available.

Meth lab and meth discovered during search
The Nacogdoches County Sheriff Office has seized a methamphetamine lab and methamphetamine from a search warrant that was executed in the 2900 block of press road Wednesday evening. Sheriff Jason Bridges stated that his office obtained probable cause for a search warrant on the residence after deputies gained information of narcotics being distributed.
Around 5:00 pm Wednesday evening, Nacogdoches County Deputies executed the search warrant at the residence where two men were found inside the residence. Sheriff Jason Bridges stated that a large methamphetamine lab was found inside the residence, and was scattered throughout the house.
Deputies seized several pounds of ammonia fertilizer, chemicals containing muriatic acid, acetone, drain cleaner, starter fluid, coleman fuel along with other common cooking components used in the production of methamphetamine.
The sheriff office seized two different labs at the residence. The suspects were using the shake and Bake method, which commonly is used in plastic bottles and produces about a gram or less of methamphetamine at a time. Deputies also seized another lab, in which the suspects were producing a large amount of crystal methamphetamine and using the same method that is often used by drug cartels in Mexico. There was an estimated seizure of over 50 grams of crystal methamphetamine seized. There was another five grams of methamphetamine seized from the other methamphetamine lab they were using.
Two suspects were arrested at the scene. Johnny Watson, 47 years of age, and Joseph Ogdee, 54 years of age both from Nacogdoches, Texas. Both subjects were charged with possession of controlled substance 2nd felony, Possession of certain chemicals with intent to distribute 2nd felony. Watson was also charged with a prohibited weapon a 3rd felony. Both subjects were transported to the Nacogdoches County Jail.
Sheriff Bridges stated that they have identified a female subject who was also living at the residence with a child, but was not there at the time the search warrant was executed. Sheriff Investigators are still investigating the involvement of other individuals and more additional warrants may be issued. The street value of the methamphetamine that was recovered is valued at over $5,000.00 dollars.

Inspirations to Sing at Bethel Chapel
Bethel Chapel Baptist Church, Pineland, will be hosting the Inspirations for a special service at 6:00 p.m. Saturday, April 6, according to the pastor, Dr. David Digmon. Nationally known, the Inspirations from Bryson City, North Carolina, have been sharing the message in southern gospel music since 1964. Roy Mills named Ag Pioneer of the Year
The Nacogdoches County Agribusiness Committee names Roy B. Mills as the Pete Smith Agricultural Pioneer of the Year. Mills will be honored at the 13th Annual Agriculture Appreciation and Awareness Banquet on April 8 at the HotelFredoniaConvention Center.
“A background filled with farming and education has made Mr. Mills a valuable contributor to our county,” said Angela Shannon, member of the Nacogdoches County Agribusiness committee, and ag banquet chair. “His ability to effectively use available resources, to persevere in his work and to advance himself in the ag industry makes him a perfect fit for the ag pioneer award.”
Mills was born on Jan. 18, 1946, one of the 10 children of Johnny and Ruthie Mills. “We were a farming family in a community north of Nacogdoches known as Redland,” Mills said. “Having 10 children gave Dad a little help on the farm.”
The family farm property began with Mills’ grandfather’s 86-acre purchase in the early 1920s. Johnny, a lifetime farmer, added two additional tracks to the homestead. He was one of the community’s few African-American farmers who had a poultry farm in the early 1950s. In addition to poultry, the Mills family grew cotton and a variety of vegetables for market.
Education was important in the family, and Mills is one of the first African-American students to begin a college career in agriculture studies and earn degrees at StephenF.AustinStateUniversity. Mills is a Vietnam veteran, and his military career began after two years of enrollment at SFA. After serving in the US Army, he returned and earned a B.S. degree and M.S. degree in agriculture and also a mid-management certification from SFA.
Teaching vocational agriculture to Tatum I.S.D. students was Mills’ first job after university. He later taught at Nacogdoches I.S.D. for a total of 32 years in the profession. “During my teaching career, my students participated in leadership and judging contests on the district, area, state and national levels,” he said.
Mills retired in 2002 from teaching and spends most of his time on the 230 acres of the family farm, gardening and managing cattle.
A new component to his production is farming worms and using the worm castings to make liquid fertilizer for the pasture and garden. His goal is to offer organically grown beef and vegetables to the market.
As president of Texas Small Farmers & Ranchers/Community Based Organization Region 3, Mills works with large groups such as the United States Department of Agriculture to get information to Nacogdoches and Angelina counties’ minority farmers. He has been involved in workshops that educate participants in new loan opportunities, technological resources and advancements in agricultural practices.
Mills is a lifetime member of Vocational Agriculture Teachers Association of Texas, president of the NorthRedlandCemetery and the OldNorthChurchAfrican-AmericanCemetery. He is a member of Texas Organic Growers Association, Nacogdoches County FSA committee and a member of JohnsonChapelBaptistChurch where he serves as a deacon and as superintendent of Sunday School.
For 44 years, he and Doris Carpenter Mills have been married and have three children, Cedric Mills, Delores Flemons and Paul Mills; and four grandchildren, Ashley, Terrance, Jerreal and Christopher.
