SFA to host ‘East Texas Chopped’ cooking competition

The Hospitality Administration program at Stephen F. Austin State University will host the second annual “East Texas Chopped” event at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 23, at the Hotel Fredonia in downtown Nacogdoches.

Similar to the television show “Chopped,” the event will feature local “celebrity” couples, as well as renowned judges with various culinary experiences. Couples will receive a mystery basket and are required to create several dishes that incorporate the mystery ingredients located within.

Judges for this year’s event are chefs Simon Webster, Jackson York, Todd Barrios and Christian Mailloux and Tyler Morning Telegraph food editor Christine Gardner.

Brookshire Brothers will sponsor a wine tasting featuring award-winning Washington and California wines from 5:30 to 6 p.m. A silent and live auction will offer more than 50 items, including a four-course gourmet dinner prepared by York for five couples, as well as a stay in a private beach house on Galveston Island.

“This event is such a great way to promote culinary tourism right here in East Texas,” said course instructor Breezy Lake-Wolfe. “This is also a great opportunity for our students to network and gain real-world experience executing a large-scale event.”

The fundraising event is produced and executed by meeting planning students in the hospitality program. Tickets are $25 and available for purchase through the SFA hospitality program’s website, www.sfasu.edu/hms.

Internationally recognized interior designer/author to visit SFA

Cynthia Leibrock, an award-winning interior designer and author, will present “Interior Design for Health and Longevity” beginning at 3:30 p.m. Thursday, April 11, in the Baker Pattillo Student Center theatre on the Stephen F. Austin State University campus.

Leibrock’s goal is to improve health and longevity for people of all ages and abilities by incorporating design features that are patient-centered and help promote independent living. She calls this “universal design.” During the presentation, Leibrock will show slides of her own home, which has been featured on the cover of The New York Times and incorporates 200 universal design features.

The purpose of Leibrock’s visit, a collaboration between SFA and the city and county of Nacogdoches, is to promote Fair Housing Month. During her trip to Nacogdoches, Leibrock also will be presenting to city and county employees and other area professionals.

This summer, Dr. Mitzi Perritt, SFA professor of human sciences, and five other educators from across the United States will travel to Leibrock’s Colorado home for an intense week of universal design study. Upon their return, the educators plan to incorporate universal design elements into their residential design classes.

“Cynthia is an internationally recognized expert on universal design,” Perritt said. “For more than 20 years, she has taught courses in the Department of Architecture at the Harvard University Graduate School of Design and collaborated on the design of The Betty Ford Center, UCLA Medical Center and an exhibit for the Smithsonian.”

Leibrock is the author of “Beautiful Barrier Free: A Visual Guide to Accessibility;” “Beautiful University Design: A Visual Guide;” and “Design Details for Health: Making the Most of Interior Design’s Health Potential,” which won the Polsky Prize for Literature.

Faculty and staff members, students, and the public are invited to attend the presentation at SFA. Admission is free. For more information, contact Perritt at (936) 468-2155.

SFA graduate student works to save endangered plant species

Laura Baker, a biotechnology graduate student at Stephen F. Austin State University, is presenting her research on threatened Hibiscus plants native to East Texas at an upcoming conference.

Baker has been selected by the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology to present her abstract and poster titled “Determination of the extent of hybridization between the threatened Hibiscus dasycalyx, Hibiscus laevis and Hibiscus moscheutos” at the ASBMB’s annual meeting in Boston this month.

Baker has been conducting research on three species of hibiscus native only to East Texas. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has listed the Hibiscus dasycalyx as threatened, but before the plant can be listed as endangered and government-funded restoration can occur, researchers need to show that it is a unique species and not a hybrid of laevis or moscheutos. In order accomplish this, Baker has been isolating genetic markers for each of the three species to show the extent of hybridization between the three plants and to prove that dasycalyx is a unique species that warrants restoration.

“Dasycalyx is disappearing at an alarming rate, and we hope that by conducting this research we will be able to restore it to its native habitat,” said Dr. Beatrice Clack, SFA associate professor of biology and biotechnology.

“This is a pure native Texas plant species, and its natural habitat is along the tributaries of the Neches River. The plant produces a showy white flower with a deep ruby throat,” Clack said. “Its common name is the Neches River rosemallow. At present, it’s found at two conservation sites and at only a few remaining natural sites. Our goal is to restore it to its natural habitat and also make it available for use in the horticulture industry.”

Baker said she considers her research an important step in saving the species. “The use of herbicides, mowing, grazing cattle and loss of wetland habitat have all contributed to this plant being threatened. We must strive to save this plant, which is endemic only to a few counties in East Texas.”

Baker will attend the conference with Clack and three additional SFA graduate students. An estimated 5,000 researchers, educators and scientists are expect to attend the conference.
