CVB earns two awards from Texas Festivals and Events Association

The Nacogdoches Convention and Visitors Bureau recently received two first-place plaques at the annual Texas Festivals and Events Association (TFEA) Conference and Trade Show in San Marcos.

The awards were for best ad series under $75,000 for the Nacogdoches Convention and Visitors Bureau’s 2012 Nine Flags Christmas Festival ads and best single magazine display ad under $75,000 for the Nacogdoches Convention and Visitors Bureau’s 2013 Azalea Trail magazine ad. The 2012 Nine Flags Christmas Festival ads were designed in-house by former Tourism Coordinator Marty Prince and ran in The Daily Sentinel. The 2013 Azalea Trail magazine ad was designed by Point A Media and was featured in Texas Monthly.

The TFEA Marketing Awards program recognizes excellence in festival promotional campaigns and is open to all members of the organization. Festivals and events compete against others in the same budget category: under $75,000; $75,000-$250,000; $250,001-$750,000; and over $750,000. There are ten marketing awards categories, and the contest is judged by a panel of event management, marketing, advertising, and public relations professionals.

The Nacogdoches Convention and Visitors Bureau last won an award from Texas Festivals and Events Association for best t-shirt design in 2009.

Obituary: Francis Merle Hunt

Mr. Francis Merle Hunt, age 89, passed away on August 20, 2013 in Nacogdoches, Texas. He was born on April 19, 1924 to parents Lewis Elbert Hunt and Nelle Vore Pittman Hunt in Havana, Kansas.

At 3:00pm on Friday, September 6, 2013 a Celebration of Life will take place at Cason Monk-Metcalf Sunset Chapel, eulogy offered by Jimmy Griffin and assisted by Butch Haltom. Private inurnment will take place at a later date at Havana Cemetery in Havana, Kansas. Online condolences may be offered at www.casonmonk-metcalf.com. Funeral arrangements are under the direction and care of Cason Monk-Metcalf Funeral Directors.

SFA exhibition showcases the evolution of portrait photography

The International Photography Portrait Exhibition will open with a reception from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 28, in Griffith Gallery on the campus of Stephen F. Austin State University.

Photographer Carlos Escolastico’s “Presencia-1, 2010” is among the photographs featured in “The Face: The Evolution of Portrait Photography,” which opens with a reception at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 28, in the Griffith Gallery on the SFA campus.

The exhibition, which has toured in galleries and museums in Paris and Russia, embraces artworks for more than 50 artists from 20 countries. The original size of the show will be somewhat limited to the space allowed in Griffith Gallery.

Curated by Andrey Martynov, “The Face: The Evolution of Portrait Photography” explores new and current trends in portrait photography from artists working in several countries, according to John Handley, director of SFA galleries.

International in scope, the exhibition demonstrates the variety of approaches from experiments with traditional analogue photography and applications of new technologies by such artists as Ben Hansen from Belgium; Atta Kim from South Korea; Roger Ballen from South Africa, and Laurence Gartel from the USA. The exhibition has been shown in the Russian cities of Moscow, St. Petersburg and Novosibirsk, as well as in Paris, France, Tokyo, Japan, and Arezzo, Italy, and has been seen by more than 25,000 visitors.

Martynov lives and works in Russia where he has been curating in the field of art for more than 15 years.

“He considers photography to have played an essential role in his work with modern and contemporary art,” Handley said. “When the LeVall Gallery closed several years ago, he was invited to join the staff of the Novosibirsk State Art Museum, bringing with him his international connections and experience.”

In 2006, Martynov organized the International Festival of Contemporary Photography entitled, “Different Dimension.” He is currently the director of the Moscow Biennale Inc.

The show, which is part of the SFA School of Art’s Gallery Series, will run through Oct. 31. Griffith Gallery is located in the Griffith Fine Arts Building, 2222 Alumni Drive. Gallery hours are from 12:30 to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Friday during the regular fall and spring semesters.

Legislative update at chamber luncheon

The Nacogdoches County Chamber of Commerce Fourth Friday Luncheon is noon to 1 p.m., Aug. 23 in the Hotel Fredonia Banita Ballroom. Sen. Robert Nichols will present “The Big 3 – Education, Transportation, Water.” He will also summarize the 83rd Texas Legislative Session. The event is presented by TXU Energy.

“I am personally grateful for the hard work of our legislators in Austin, especially having had the chance to catch a small glimpse of it during Nacogdoches/SFA Days in Austin,” said Dr. Adam Peck, SFA Dean of Student and Fourth Friday Luncheon chairman. “I look forward to hearing their perspectives on what was accomplished during this legislative session.”

First elected to the Texas Senate in 2006, Nichols represents 19 counties including the greater part of East Texas. During his four sessions as a state senator, Nichols authored and passed legislation to protect landowners’ rights, increase educational opportunities in East Texas and reform transportation policies.

Luncheon reservations are required and a registration form is available in Forms at nacogdoches.org. A secure “register and pay online” option is available on the website in the Hot News section. Lunch is $16, and the deadline for reservations is Aug. 22.

All attendees will be entered in a $50 cash drawing, and every Chamber member is entered in a $250 drawing, but you must be present to win. Both drawings are sponsored by First Bank & Trust East Texas.
