Ben Pierce

The Stephen F. Austin State University School of Music will present Ben Pierce, professor of tuba and euphonium at the University of Arkansas, in a guest recital at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 23, in Cole Concert Hall on the SFA campus.

“Pierce is an accomplished low brass artist and teacher,” said J.D. Salas, assistant professor of tuba and euphonium studies at SFA. “Pierce has notably been the winner of some dozen international tuba and euphonium artist competitions held in the United States, Japan, Germany, Finland, South Korea, England and Italy.”

He is a frequent soloist at home and abroad performing many solo recitals as well as concerti with such ensembles as the premier United States military bands, top American brass bands, and such orchestras as the Tokyo Symphony, Oulu Symphony (Finland), and Vogtland Philharmonie (Germany).

Enjoying a varied ensemble career, Pierce has performed with the Detroit Symphony, the Detroit Chamber Brass, the Toledo Symphony, the Flint Symphony, and the Tulsa Symphony. He has served as principal tubist of the Ann Arbor Symphony and is principal tubist of SONA, formerly the North Arkansas Symphony Orchestra. He is a member of the acclaimed Brass Band of Battle Creek featuring many of the world’s greatest brass players.

His performance at SFA will be on tuba and euphonium. Among the works he will perform is Euphonium Concerto by John Stevens.

“It is intended to showcase the tone, range, technical and musical capabilities in the hands of an advanced performer,” Salas said. “Particular attention has been paid to the lyrical qualities of the writing, even in the more rhythmic and technical outer movements.”

He will also perform “Jabberwocky” by David Gillingham and The Three Romances, op. 94, by Robert Schumann.

Acclaimed pianist Tomoko Kashiwagi will accompany Pierce. Kashiwagi performs regularly with double bass soloist DaXun Zhang nationally and internationally. SFA’s A Cappella Choir to present ‘Tempest and Harmony’

SFA’s A Cappella Choir will perform “Tempest and Harmony” at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 24, in Cole Concert Hall on the SFA campus.

The Stephen F. Austin State University College of Fine Arts and School of Music will present the A Cappella Choir performing “Tempest and Harmony” at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 24, in Cole Concert Hall on the SFA campus.

The concert title was selected because of the multitude of emotions music can evoke, according to Dr. Tim King, director of choral activities for the School of Music.

“Whether it is the text or storyline, a composer’s personal circumstances, or simply the musical language itself, music is dramatic,” King said. “Yet in the presence of this drama, music has the beautiful ability to resolve conflict.”

The opening number – a setting of Psalm 24 – is composed by Martha de Luna of the Dominican Republic, an SFA graduate student in piano and a member of the A Cappella Choir.

Among the other works to be performed is William Byrd’s “Ave Verum Corpus.” Byrd (1540-1623) is considered by many to be England’s first master composer, according to King.

“A Catholic in Protestant England, Byrd composed the ‘Ave Verum Corpus,’ his best-known work, as part of a set of songs for the entire church liturgical year,” King explained.

Another featured work is “Canticum Calamitatis Maritimae” by Finnish composer Jaakko Mäntyjärvi.

“This piece is dedicated to the memory of those who perished in the shipwreck of the Estonia on Sept. 28, 1994,” King explained. “‘Canticum’ uses texts from Nuntii Latini, the weekly news broadcasts in Latin by the Finnish Broadcasting Company, and texts from the book of Psalms and the Requiem Mass.”

Schaffe in mir, Gott, ein rein Herz, (Create in me, O God, a pure heart) Op. 29 by Johannes Brahms (1833-1897), which is “probably the most often performed work of Brahms’ motet genre,” King said, will also be performed.
Pianist Dr. Ron Petti, director of accompanying at SFA, will be featured in “The Sounding Sea” by Eric Barnum.
Cole Concert Hall is located in the Tom and Peggy Wright Music Building, 2210 Alumni Drive.

Tickets are $8 for adults, $6 for seniors and $3 for students. For tickets or more information, please visit www.finearts.sfasu.edu or call the SFA Fine Arts Box Office at (936) 468-6407 or (888) 240-ARTS.

SFA’s Wind Symphony, Symphonic Band to perform music of Steven Bryant

Steven Bryant

The Stephen F. Austin State University College of Fine Arts and School of Music will present the Wind Symphony and Symphonic Band performing the music of composer Steven Bryant in a concert at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 22, in W.M. Turner Auditorium on the SFA campus.

Under the direction of Tamey Anglley, assistant director of bands, the Symphonic Band will open the concert with “Riders for the Flag” march by John Philip Sousa. The band will then perform two pieces by guest composer Bryant.

The first piece is “Bloom,” which is a celebration of springtime, and the second piece, “The Machine Awakes,” is for band and electronics.

“Not generally used in the wind band genre, the electronics add the sound of something not human waking for the first time,” Bryant explained.

The Symphonic Band will close its half of the concert with “Masque” by Francis McBeth, who was Bryant’s first composition professor. “Masque” was commissioned by University of Central Arkansas and was premiered in 1968.

The Wind Symphony, under the direction of David Campo, associate director of bands at SFA, will perform two of Bryant’s works: “First Light” and “Paean” (Chant and Triumph). Of “First Light,” Bryant says, “The title ‘First Light’ refers to the arrival of dawn – the transformation of darkness into light. In particular, it is shaped by my experience of dawn in the mountains surrounding Lake Garda in northern Italy.”

“Paean” was commissioned in memory of Ernest and Donald Caneva by their family and friends and pays tribute to the men and their years of accomplishments as bandleaders, Bryant said. The fanfare “Triumph” forms the second of two works in the set, while “Chant” developed from a visit to Francis McBeth, Bryant’s mentor and first composition teacher.
“This music celebrates and is dedicated to the mentors and teachers who have shaped and inspired us,” according to Bryant.
Bryant composes music across a variety of media and ensembles, ranging from electronic and electro-acoustic works, to chamber music, to works for wind ensembles and orchestras. His music has been performed by numerous ensembles across North America, Europe and East Asia.
Bryant will be composer in residence prior to the concert to work with both ensembles in final preparations for the concert.

This performance of the Wind Symphony and Symphonic Band is part of the School of Music’s Concert Series.

Tickets are $8 for adults, $6 for seniors and $3 for students. For tickets or more information, please visit www.finearts.sfasu.edu or call (936) 468-6407 or (888) 240-ARTS.

SFA’s University Series exhibition will feature Day of the Dead altars

Nacogdoches artist Wally Knight works on his Day of the Dead altar that will be among other altars on display as part of the “Día de los Muertos: Art of the Living and the Dead” exhibition showing from Nov. 1 through Jan. 4 at The Cole Art Center @ The Old Opera House in downtown Nacogdoches.

The Stephen F. Austin State University College of Fine Arts and School of Art will present the exhibition “Día de los Muertos: Art of the Living and the Dead” from Nov. 1 through Jan. 4 at The Cole Art Center @ The Old Opera House as part of the 2013-2014 University Series, “Live Out Loud.”

The exhibition, featuring 13 altars created by North and East Texas area artists and “non-artists,” will explore traditional Day of the Dead observances through different cultural, ethnic and religious/non-religious perspectives, according to John Handley, SFA galleries director. The exhibition, which will be displayed in the Ledbetter Gallery, will open with a reception from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Nov. 1, at Cole Art Center.

The Day of the Dead altars, which celebrate the lives of those who have passed on, will be created in a variety of media, made by both trained and untrained artists, Handley said.

The Day of the Dead observance is considered a cheerful celebration of life, honoring the souls of the deceased. Day of the Dead, or Día de los Muertos, is a Mexican term derived from the Roman Catholic All Saints’ and All Souls’ days, traditionally observed Nov. 1 and 2. An array of activities, ranging from decorating graves to creating home altars, typically highlight the celebration that can last for days.

Patrons will see a variety of altars, some more conceptual and some that might not seem like an altar at all but are the artist’s interpretation, Handley said. Some of the altars will have interactive components, including sound and light, and some will be several feet in dimension. There will also be a community altar where visitors will be encouraged to pin a small (non-returnable) copy of a photograph of a deceased relative or friend, and also write a short memento about them, Handley said.

Altars will be created by the Robles family, Wally Knight, Denise Stringer Davis, Phillip Shore, who is associate professor of sculpture at University of Dallas, Adriana Martinez-Gonzales, Aloma Marquis, Maki Hajikano and Gary Parker, who are SFA art faculty members, and Irma Martinez Sizer, Stanley Bohon, Byron Lacy, Tina Medina and Merci Nicklas.

Day of the Dead masks created by Lufkin High School students will also be displayed.

In a separate but related event, the SFA Friends of the Visual Arts will host a Day of the Dead Fiesta and Fundraiser on the night of Nov. 9, the same night as the opening of an exhibition of the work of artist John August Swanson in the upstairs Reavley Gallery at Cole Art Center.

The Swanson opening will feature a presentation from 6 to 7 p.m. on Day of the Dead traditions by Drs. José N. Recinos and Gabriela Miranda-Recinos of SFA’s Latin American Studies Program. The fiesta and fundraiser will begin at 7:30 p.m. and will feature music and traditional Hispanic food to accentuate the Day of the Dead altars on display in the downstairs Ledbetter Gallery.

The fundraiser, which takes the place of the Hooked on Art fundraiser, will benefit both The Cole Art Center and School of Art student scholarships. An art auction will feature papier maché Day of the Dead sculptures and skulls, Day of the Dead masks, two-dimensional art such as paintings or woodcut or linocut prints in various themes, and jewelry.

The Cole Art Center is located at 329 E. Main Street. For additional information, call (936) 468-1131.

Songs of composer John Duke to be featured in concert

The Stephen F. Austin State University School of Music and Cole Performing Arts Series will present “Into the Wild: The Songs of John Duke” at 7:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 21, in Cole Concert Hall on the SFA campus.

The program will feature pianist Dr. Ron Petti, director of accompanying at SFA, and members of the SFA voice faculty, including Debbie Berry and Charlotte Davis, sopranos; Dr. Jamie Dahman and Dr. Tod Fish, tenors; Dr. Deborah Dalton and Nita Hudson, mezzo sopranos; and Dr. Scott LaGraff, baritone.

“Into the Wild” was selected as the title for the concert because many of American composer John Duke’s 265 songs have “vivid references to nature throughout the text,” according to Petti.

“Duke often uses the piano to depict the imagery of the text through bird calls, rhythmic figures which imitate the galloping of horses, a shimmering piano part reminiscent of snowflakes, and even a jolly, happy-go-lucky, swaying accompaniment in ‘I taste a liquor never brewed,’” Petti said.

Other Duke songs to be performed are the well-known “Loveliest of Trees,” “I Carry Your Heart,” “I Ride the Great Black Horses” and “Luke Havergal.”

The concert is a joint presentation of the SFA College of Fine Arts and School of Music.

Explanatory Statements for the November 5th, 2013
Constitutional Amendment Election

Proposition Number 1 (H.J.R. 62)

“The constitutional amendment authorizing the legislature to provide for an exemption from ad valorem taxation of all or part of the market value of the residence homestead of the surviving spouse of a member of the armed services of the United States who is killed in action.”  FOR/AGAINST

HJR 62 proposes a constitutional amendment to authorize the legislature to provide by statute for an exemption from ad valorem taxation of all or part of the market value of the residence homestead of the surviving spouse of a member of the United States armed services who is killed in action, as long as the surviving spouse has not remarried. An eligible spouse who later qualifies a different property as the surviving spouse’s residence homestead could be authorized by statute to receive an exemption from ad valorem taxation in the same amount received for the first qualifying homestead during the last year in which the surviving spouse received the exemption.

Proposition Number 2 (H.J.R. 79)

“The constitutional amendment eliminating an obsolete requirement for a State Medical Education Board and a State Medical Education Fund, neither of which is operational.”  FOR/AGAINST

HJR 79 proposes a constitutional amendment to repeal the constitutional provision requiring the creation of a State Medical Education Board and a State Medical Education Fund, neither of which is in operation. No new loans have been made from the fund by the board in more than 25 years, and the board currently has no appointees and receives no program funding.

Proposition Number 3 (H.J.R. 133)

“The constitutional amendment to authorize a political subdivision of this state to extend the number of days that aircraft parts that are exempt from ad valorem taxation due to their location in this state for a temporary period may be located in this state for purposes of qualifying for the tax exemption.”  FOR/AGAINST

HJR 133 would authorize local political subdivisions to extend the length of time that aircraft parts could remain temporarily in this state before being subject to ad valorem taxation. Under current law, merchandise, wares, and goods (including aircraft parts) may remain in this state temporarily for up to 175 days before being subject to ad valorem taxation; the proposed amendment would permit taxing entities to extend the exemption up to 730 days after the date that a person acquired or imported aircraft parts in the state.

Proposition Number 4 (H.J.R. 24)

“The constitutional amendment authorizing the legislature to provide for an exemption from ad valorem taxation of part of the market value of the residence homestead of a partially disabled veteran or the surviving spouse of a partially disabled veteran if the residence homestead was donated to the disabled veteran by a charitable organization.”  FOR/AGAINST

HJR 24 proposes a constitutional amendment that would allow the legislature to provide for an exemption from ad valorem taxation of part of the market value of the residence homestead of a partially disabled veteran or the surviving spouse of a partially disabled veteran if the residence homestead was donated to the disabled veteran at no cost to the veteran by a charitable organization.

Proposition Number 5 (S.J.R. 18)

“The constitutional amendment to authorize the making of a reverse mortgage loan for the purchase of homestead property and to amend lender disclosures and other requirements in connection with a reverse mortgage loan.”  FOR/AGAINST

SJR 18 would amend the definition of “reverse mortgage” to authorize the making of reverse mortgage loans for the purchase of homestead property in addition to the current legal uses of those loans, and would give lenders recourse against borrowers who fail to timely occupy the homestead properties purchased with such loans. SJR 18 would also add to the definition of “reverse mortgage” an extension of credit that is not closed before the 12th day after the lender provides to the prospective borrower a written notice summarizing risks and conditions of a reverse mortgage. The language of the required notice is prescribed in the resolution.

Proposition Number 6 (S.J.R. 1)

“The constitutional amendment providing for the creation of the State Water Implementation Fund for Texas and the State Water Implementation Revenue Fund for Texas to assist in the financing of priority projects in the state water plan to ensure the availability of adequate water resources.”  FOR/AGAINST

SJR 1 would create the State Water Implementation Fund as a special fund inside the state treasury and outside the General Revenue Fund. Money in the fund would be administered by the Texas Water Development Board (TWDB) and would be used to implement the state water plan, as adopted by general law, by TWDB.

Proposition Number 7 (H.J.R. 87)

“The constitutional amendment authorizing a home-rule municipality to provide in its charter the procedure to fill a vacancy on its governing body for which the unexpired term is 12 months or less.”  FOR/AGAINST

HJR 87 proposes a constitutional amendment to allow home-rule municipalities to adopt charter provisions authorizing the filling of vacancies in the governing body by appointment, but only when the remainder of the vacant term is less than 12 months. Under current law, municipal voters may adopt terms of office for municipal officers longer than two years, but upon approving longer terms of office, any resulting vacancies in office must be filled by special election. The proposed amendment would provide an option for home-rule municipalities to fill short-term vacancies through appointment.

Proposition Number 8 (H.J.R. 147 and S.J.R. 54)

“The constitutional amendment repealing Section 7, Article IX, Texas Constitution, which relates to the creation of a hospital district in Hidalgo County.”  FOR/AGAINST

HJR 147 would repeal the Texas Constitution’s maximum tax rate for a Hidalgo County hospital district; the maximum rate is currently set at 10 cents per $100 valuation. This rate is lower than the maximum tax rate allowable for hospital districts in all other counties in the State (75 cents per $100 valuation). The repeal of the constitutional cap would authorize hospital district tax rates in Hidalgo County equal to the hospital district tax rate laws applicable to all other Texas counties.

Proposition Number 9 (S.J.R. 42)

“The constitutional amendment relating to expanding the types of sanctions that may be assessed against a judge or justice following a formal proceeding instituted by the State Commission on Judicial Conduct.”  FOR/AGAINST

SJR 42 would expand the potential sanctions that the State Commission on Judicial Conduct can issue following a formal proceeding. This constitutional amendment would allow the Commission to issue an order of public admonition, warning, reprimand, or a requirement to obtain additional training or education in addition to the Commission’s current authority to issue a public censure or recommend removal or retirement of a judge.

A Favor/En Contra

A Favor/En Contra

A Favor/En Contra

A Favor/En Contra
