SFA Music Preparatory recitals scheduled in December

Students enrolled in private and group lessons offered by the Music Preparatory Division of the Stephen F. Austin State University School of Music will present end-of-the-semester recitals this month.

SFA student teachers’ students and Dr. Mario Ajero’s piano students will perform at 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 8, followed by piano students of Theresa Moon and Bruno Ribeiro performing at 4 p.m. Sunday. Both recitals will be in the Music Recital Hall in the Wright Music Building on the SFA campus.

A performance of the Piney Woods Youth Orchestra, conducted by Dr. Evgeni Raychev with student assistant Pavel Baez, will take place at 7:30 p.m. Monday, Dec. 9, in Cole Concert Hall.

On Tuesday, Dec. 10, string students of Raychev and Dr. Jennifer Dalmas will perform at 7:30 p.m. in then Music Recital Hall.

Violin students of Brenda Josephsen will perform at 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 14, in Cole Concert Hall, followed by recitals by piano students of Dr. Ping-Ting Lan at 4 p.m. in Cole Concert Hall and by piano students of Linda Parr at 4 p.m. in the Music Recital Hall.

Piano students of Mary Cooper will perform at 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 15, in Cole Concert Hall, and violin students of Melissa Nabb will perform at 2 p.m. Dec. 15 in the Music Recital Hall.

Music Prep fall recitals will conclude on Monday, Dec. 16, with a 7 p.m. performance of the Piney Woods Chorale, directed by Nicole Stewart with assistant Shelby Tillery, in the Music Recital Hall.

All recitals are open to the public.

AGGRAVATED ROBBERY- 400 BLOCK OF HASLEY STREET

Two men are in custody following an aggravated robbery this morning at a residence on Hasley Street.

Nacogdoches Police were called to a residence in the 400 block of Hasley Street this morning at 9:36 a.m. Officers determined that two suspects had approached a residence and knocked on the door. One suspect went back to a waiting vehicle and the other threatened the 69 year old male resident with a handgun. The suspect demanded money from the victim and when he advised that he had none, the suspect forced him at gunpoint to a residence next door, where the suspect then threatened a female victim demanding money. A struggle ensued between the male victim and the suspect, and the suspect fled the scene, northbound on Hasley and into an awaiting vehicle. The handgun used by the suspect was recovered by police at the scene.

Just over an hour after the call, officers located a suspect vehicle and two suspects on Leroy Street at Railroad. The individuals arrested are Devonte Brown, age 18 and Zachary Charqwan Brooks, age 19, both of Nacogdoches. They have each been charged with two counts of aggravated robbery and are in custody pending arraignment.

The male victim in the robbery was transported to a local hospital for treatment of a hand injury sustained in the incident.

Obituary: Harvey C. Hensley

Mr. Harvey C. Hensley, 92, passed away Thursday, December 05, 2013, at an area hospital.

Mr. Hensley was born May 14, 1921, in Corbin, Kentucky, to parents Francis Marion Hensley and Susan Kelly Hensley. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and was injured in the Battle of the Bulge. In recognition of his service, he was awarded the Purple Heart and two Bronze Stars.

He received a civil engineering degree from the University of Tennessee at Knoxville, graduating in 1950. He worked with the State Department before beginning a career with the Veterans Affairs, spanning approximately 30 years. Retiring from the VA Medical Center in Houston in 1981, he had also worked in Cave City, Kentucky, Johnson City, Tennessee, Montgomery, Alabama, Dallas, Texas, Haddonfield, New Jersey, and Middletown, Ohio.

Following retirement, he and his wife Lorraine moved to Nacogdoches. He was a member of Perritte Memorial Methodist Church, Good Sams RV Club, and the Lions Club.

His survivors include his wife of 71 years, Lorraine Elizabeth Hensley; sons, Charles R. Hensley and wife Pamela Jane of New Boston, Texas, John Harvey Hensley of Los Angeles, California, and Richard Edward Hensley and wife Pamela Louise of Latexo, Texas; grandchildren, Jamie Lynn Tye and husband Kevin of Texarkana, Arkansas, Jason Hensley of Flagstaff, Arizona, Joshua Hensley of Los Angeles, Jody Elizabeth Sailor of Eden, Texas, Richard Dylan Hensley of Latexo, and Patrick Thompson and Sean Thompson, both of Austin; great-grandchildren, Sophia, Naomi, and Theresa Hensley, all of Flagstaff, Brylee Elizabeth Sailor of Eden, and Sean Thompson II of Austin; and a sister, Francine Garrett of Ohio.

Services are set for 2:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 7, 2013, at Cason Monk-Metcalf Sunset Chapel, located at 5400 North Street in Nacogdoches, with Rev. Josh Hale officiating. Interment follows with military rites at Sunset Memorial Park, located at 5127 North Street in Nacogdoches.
