With Halloween approaching this Friday, parents and children who plan to trick-or-treat should be careful and safety-conscious.
Sgt. Greg Sowell, NPD Public Information Officer, offers the following safety suggestions that can help keep Halloween safe and fun for all.
• Costumes should be flame retardant, and be decorated with reflective tape. If out after dark, a flashlight and cell phone should be carried.
• Costumes should fit well, to prevent tripping. Masks should fit properly and not obstruct visibility.
• Swords, knives and similar costume accessories should be made of flexible plastic or other soft material.
• An adult should always accompany young children. Children should WALK, never run, from house to house. Use sidewalks where possible.
• Avoid crossing the street in the middle of the block, and walk facing oncoming traffic. Be careful going between parked cars.
• Trick or Treaters should only go to homes of people they know, and who have porch lights on.
• All treats should be inspected by an adult prior to consuming.
Motorists are urged to use extreme caution, especially in residential areas Friday evening.
The Nacogdoches Police Department will heavily patrol neighborhoods this weekend to monitoring traffic and deter vandalism
All students in the Stephen F. Austin State University Music Preparatory Division who tried out for all-region orchestras recently were selected to participate in either the middle school or high school regional ensembles, according to Pat Barnett, Music Prep director.
“We are so very proud of our students,” Barnett said.
As a result, six middle school students and eight high school students will join the all-region orchestras when they perform Saturday, Dec. 6, at Longview High School.
Auditions were held Oct. 18 at Grace Community School in Tyler.
Chloe Cook was named concertmaster for the all-region middle school orchestra. Catherine Meisenheimer and Sheetal Bapu were both selected as first violinists. Mattie Chauvin was selected as principal for the second violins. Megan Petti and Ashlynn McBroom were also selected as second violinists.

The Stephen F. Austin State University School of Art will present an exhibition of student photography showing Nov. 3 through Jan. 10 in the Reception Hall Gallery in The Cole Art Center @ The Old Opera House.
The exhibition will include both traditional photographs and tintypes, according to Johanna Warwick, assistant professor of photography in the School of Art. The photographs are from a seven-day camping trip advanced photography students took during this past Maymester to Santa Fe, N.M.
“Every Maymester, we go camping for a week and return to school and make prints the following week,” Warwick said. “Previous trips have been to Big Bend. During the trip, we visit national parks, nearby cities and art museums and do a tintype workshop with Bostick & Sullivan (a supplier for handcrafted photography).”
All SFA art exhibitions are free and open to the public.
The Cole Art Center is located at 329 E. Main St. in downtown Nacogdoches. For information on this and other SFA exhibitions, call (936) 468-1131.

Do you believe there is a little magic in museums? We sure do. The third time this year the City of Nacogdoches Historic Sites Department and the SFA School of Theater are teaming up to present a fun, fairy tale themed event.
Our Storybook Saturday event will be Saturday, October 25th at 10:30 a.m. at the Durst-Taylor Historic House and Gardens. Cinderella and Jack from Jack and the Beanstalk will be visiting the museum and telling us their stories. Both of these stories are not only magical, but very old; both appearing in print in the early 1800s.
Visitors are asked to arrive 10 minutes before story time starts so they can find a seat and get ready to listen. One of our stories, Jack and the Beanstalk, will be told outside, so visitors are encouraged to dress appropriately. There will be light refreshments served before story time begins and children are encouraged to dress up like their favorite fairy tale characters. There will be an opportunity to take pictures with our actors after story time.
This event is made possible through cooperation with the Stephen F. Austin State University School of Theatre. Admission to this event is free and appropriate for all ages.
For more information about Storybook Saturday, contact the Historic Sites Department at 936-560-4443 or by email at historicsites@ci.nacogdoches.tx.us .
The Stone Fort Wind Quintet at Stephen F. Austin State University will present its fall concert at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 4, in Cole Concert Hall on the SFA campus.
The concert is a joint presentation of the SFA College of Fine Arts and School of Music and is a feature of the Cole Performing Arts Series. The

SFA’s Stone Fort Wind Quintet features, from left, Christopher Ayer, clarinet; Christina Guenther-Scott, flute; Staci Spring, bassoon; Charles Gavin, horn: and John W. Goodall, oboe.
The recital will feature a variety of repertoire, including a classic Franz Danzi quintet, a recently rediscovered quintet by Malcolm Arnold, dance- and rhythm-inspired music by Henrique de Curitiba and Valerie Coleman, and a piece by Raymond Premru featuring trombone.
Dr. Deb Scott, professor of trombone at SFA, will join the group for Premru’s Concertino for Solo Trombone and Woodwind Quartet.“Original compositions for this combination of instruments are rare in the repertoire, and we are delighted to collaborate with our talented colleague to perform this intriguing work,” Spring said.
The group will also perform Arnold’s Wind Quintet, Op. 2, written and performed in 1942. It then disappeared for more than 60 years and was re-discovered after the clarinetist (who took it home for safekeeping) died in 1999, according to Spring.
“Arnold’s other wind quintet, Three Shanties, is one of the most popular works in the quintet repertoire and was written around the same time,” she said. “We feel this work deserves equal recognition, and it has been a joy to put the piece together.”
The quintet will also perform Danzi’z Quintet in G minor, Op. 56, No. 2 and Coleman’s “Umoja.” “Umoja” is the Swahili word for “unity,” and is the name for first day in the celebration of Kwanzaa.
“With the exception of the standard Danzi quintet, most of this repertoire is brand new to us, and we are very excited to present this eclectic program,” Spring said. “There is sure to be something for everyone to enjoy.”
Tickets are $8 for adults, $6 for seniors and $3 for students and youth. For tickets or more information, call the SFA Fine Arts Box Office at (936) 468-6407 or visit www.finearts.sfasu.edu.
